THe debut of Bettergoods marks Walmart’s largest private-label launch in the food and beverage category in 20 years. The items fall under three category pillars: 1) Culinary experiences: Items with “innovative” recipes, elevated ingredients and trendy offerings, such as a hot honey seasoning for $3 and a line of jar soups, including a creamy corn jalapeno chowder for $4. 2) Plant-based: Products feature distinct green branding, such as oatmilk non-dairy frozen desserts for $3.44 a pint and a $4 cheese alternative. 3) “Made Without”: Products that cater to different dietary lifestyles, such as gluten free, or made without artificial flavors, colorings or added sugars. Takeaway: Rising grocery prices in 2022, drove cost-conscious consumers to shift to private labels to save money.​ However, the reasons now extend beyond price - consumers continue to buy private brands for their quality, taste, and ability to meet their specific dietary needs. #walmart #privatebrands #commerce

DTC/Digital Native Brands struggle to achieve scale. CPG portfolio's are stagnating. Consumers are trading down, and retailers owned brands are disproportionately growing. Target, Costco, Trader Joes, and Aldi owned brands are winning. Now Walmart has launched a formidable new elevated basics brand, BetterGoods. The best way to beat the Amazon/Temu/Shein/TikTok marketplaces is to sell products they don't have.

Walmart announced on Friday that it is expanding the InHome delivery service to an additional 10 million households. With this expansion, InHome is now available to 45 million households across more than 50 markets, marking a nearly 30% increase in customer reach. The InHome service is especially helpful for shoppers who are away from home during the day or travel frequently. It solves a major issue with online grocery delivery: having to be home to store cold and frozen groceries immediately after they are delivered. Additionally, InHome is beneficial for families who wish to assist their elderly relatives from a distance, ensuring their groceries are properly put away without needing to be there in person. As InHome service expands, it will be interesting to observe the impact on sales volume and the extent of the increase. The addition of each new market generates potential growth, making it a key area to watch in Walmart’s ongoing efforts to gain ground in #online #grocery penetration.

Consistent growth over time has now allowed these products to represent nearly 10% of volume across Food and Beverage. Key EMARKETER stat: US omnichannel retail media ad spend will hit $129.93 billion in 2028, according to our forecast, up from $54.85 billion this year. Beyond the chart: 81% of advertisers feel retail media is at least “very important” to their strategies, coming in higher than any other marketing channel, according to Skai and the Path to Purchase Institute data from December 2023. Retail media is becoming vital to ad channels outside of retail media networks as the first-party data it gathers from retailers allows for better targeting across social, search, and the open web. Advertisers are still challenged by how complicated retail media advertising is, due to the sheer volume of retail media networks and the lack of standardization over ad formats and measurement. #retailmedia #omnichannelretail #digitalmarketing

Interesting move by Amazon, stripping back food *frills* and opting for basic, if not offensively cold, packaging for Fresh shoppers. The direction seems odd given the demographic of those using Prime for delivered groceries. Focusing on more inventive and unique private-labeled products (like chocolate almond butter at Target) would be more appealing to said demo. The bifurcation of our current economy is eye popping. On one side consumer confidence spiked last month - the Conference Board's October report rose more than 11% (to a reading of 138) - its biggest one-month jump in 3 1/2 years. The last time? March 2021. “Consumers’ assessments of current business conditions turned positive,” said Dana Peterson, the board’s chief economist. Wait what? How'd that happen? Conversely you have a BLS Jolts report confirming what #jobseekers already knew - the long awaited"September Surge" was a nothing burger. Hiring rate remained steady at 5.6 million (3.5% rate). There's a breakdown on hires by industry and region in Table 2 of the BLS report (attached in comments). Check it out. You'll see : ➡ Hiring is down overall YoY by 277K jobs in the private sector ➡ The Northeast is lagging with hiring down 15% MoM, ➡ "Professional and Business Services" added 1M hires, however this was 11K fewer than Aug '24 and 4K less than was added in Sept of 23. Newsflash: Employment is definitely not in expansion mode. Also alarming: job openings remained at 7.4M - BUT the number of open roles declined by 1.9M over the year. Thats over 20% fewer open roles than a year ago! ➡ Fewer open jobs without unemployment decreasing = greater competition for what roles there are. Also worth noting: there have been 525,000 fewer quits this year so far. Definitely DO NOT QUIT unless you have something lined up - this market is straight up squid games. Recruiters claim it's the worst employment market in recent memory, and that includes 09-12 (although interest rates went to near zero by end of 2009 which spurred hiring. That won't happen again). Clearly no one at the Conference Board gauging #consumer confidence has spoken to anyone in the #greenbannergang. Nor have they applied to any jobs. Probably haven't met the hundreds I have who are torching a lifetime of savings, dipping deeply into 401Ks, or burning through HELOC money while competing with 500 others for a role that pays 20% less than their last one. On a macro - level, I imagine we'll see some revisions to holiday forecasts, especially in retail. Confident consumers spend. Thats a good sign! Yes, consumer debt is at an all time high, but that's mostly because houses and rent are stupid expensive. (context: In 2000, the median home value in the United States was approximately $119,600. Today in 2024, its $420,400. WTF?) Hopefully the rainbows and unicorns being touted by consumer confidence folks will translate into actual hiring. Otherwise the haves and have nots will continue to erode the economy from the inside out (have jobs or not have jobs). I'll link to BLS report in comments. Costco is building out an ad network built on its trove of loyalty membership data, using its 74.5 million household members’ shopping habits and past purchases to power targeted advertising on and off its website. The wholesale retailer is still testing such capabilities, and it’s fielding offers from potential ad-tech vendors, but the move signals that the third-largest retailer in the US could become a formidable player in the already deeply fragmented retail media space, which is estimated to reach $166 billion by 2025, and responsible for 20% of all digital media spend this year, according to eMarketer. #retailmedia #costco #wholesaleclubs
