"PPC is too expensive and I don't get results" According to statistics provided by Google, the typical return on a PPC should be 2/1. Why do so many business owners feel like PPC has become a black hole of cash spend? 1. There's no coherent strategy for the keyword groups, and/or businesses simply used the native Google Ad tools on the platform. - Our team from the start focuses on finding keyword groups that provide businesses value and diversify the objective, intent and focus of the keywords. Think of it like a financial portfolio... would your CPA recommend you only own 1 stock? Why would you only try to run ads for one specific keyword group or intent? 2. Too often I see PPC campaigns where the user journey starts at the home page, or on a landing page with no calls to action. AKA reporting. - I've talked to countless business owners or marketers who spend enormous amounts of money but don't go over any reports or have subpar tracking methods. If you don't track the performance of your campaigns, how do you expect to improve? PPC doesn't have to be a black hole for your budget. Some challenges with SEO consulting in the age of HCU and SGE: 1. While we'd love Google to be more transparent about how it works, they are likely not going to be; or at best, they are not going to be specific-enough to give us much that is actionable. 2. While a lot of us SEO types help Google by helping site owners make it easier for Google to find the good stuff & reduce the bad stuff, I am guessing this is not a KPI Google prioritizes; or at least not one it prioritizes above KPIs like "make money" or "increase Google usage." 3. We get paid to figure out how Google works well enough for our knowledge to positively impact a client's business. When we don't know how it works well enough for us to do so - often the best we can do is read the tea leaves & provide evergreen advice (cut the page bloat, improve the content, etc.), which may benefit our clients in the long run. Understandably, this is not helpful to clients with short-term KPIs, but it's the game we are playing. I can't tell you how many sites we have worked on that tanked, did nothing for 6 months, then came back stronger than ever. 4. There are plenty of short-term ways to get around sites that have been hit by HCU, or at least sites that appear to have been. One of our more enterprising clients that lost about 90% of their organic traffic, relaunched their site on a new domain sans a lot of the issues we pointed out were likely hurting them (au revoir Vignette ads and ai-generated descriptions). They haven't recovered all the lost traffic, but organic traffic to the new domain is growing rapidly. I am going to guess this won't last, but hey, beats standing around waiting for a new algo to come around. I know SEOs who are seeing some kind of recovery (may be hit by HCU or not - probably not) by playing around with backlinks and such, but are not publicizing it for obvious reasons. 5. I am relatively confident site owners hit by HCU who can hold their breath will see some relief (perhaps as early as the day after Reddit's first earnings call), but there will be plenty who suffocate before then. Most SEOs I know emphasize to clients SEO cannot be your only/main customer acquisition channel. But times like these underscore just how much a successful SEO program subsidizes the cost of other channels. Reminds me of that quote about how when the tide goes out you can see who's naked... 6. Maybe this is a good thing as it will shift site owners' perspectives to longer-term thinking? Case in point, a site we told like six years ago that they need to reduce the millions of low-value URLs is actually going to start doing so after getting slammed by HCU. They made a lot of bank by not doing so and holding their breath during previous algo rollercoasters, but they don't want to make that bet again. TLDR - big shout out to all the white hats, black hats, grey hats, & no-hats who have been sharing SEO knowledge. It takes an SEO village...

I spend a significant amount of time repairing broken conversion events in paid media platforms. Here are the top 5 culprits: 1. Website changes (design updates, domain changes) 2. CRM changes 3. GTM changes (often related to 1 and 2) 4. Trying to run an old Google Analytics tag 5. Integration with tech partner is broken All 5 require conversations with other people on other teams to diagnose, troubleshoot, and fix. The best media managers are those that understand and work well with their media teammates.

A lot of people hate on Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg for his run at WP Engine over copyright violations and also for leveraging the platform to become a $540MM behemoth in the hosting space. But here's the thing, WordPress is open source, but open source does not necessarily mean it's free. Open Source seeks and incorporates contributions from users and developers So does Shopify Shopify charges a minimum of $30 a month WordPress charges nothing. Shopify boasts about besting WooCommerce, a business Mr. Mullenweg is deeply connected to. Haters telling the CEO he is holding them hostage over the platform. Maybe. Maybe not. Automattic has $710MM in revenues on 861MM installations. So if Automattic wants to regain the crown of CMS for commerce, a fee of just $12 a year, $1 per month per installation, is $10 Billion a year in revenues. Shopify is $2 billion a year in revenues. At 5X, Automattic could then sink billions into WooCommerce to make it a $12-a-year piece of software that can rival anything in the market. Haters are going to hate. If you got a free ride with WordPress and never paid a cent or contributed a nickel to the platform, should you be hating over something free? Facebook is free. So is Instagram. LinkedIn. Twitter. Pinterest. But they have all monetized their platforms. Automattic has met and beaten its goal of liberating content on the web. Maybe it's time for them to reap the rewards too.

The product listing tool actually works fairly well. Great starting point for developing new content for Amazon listings. Including product compliance up front is a definite improvement. The automated A+ content tool that I've seen in action has not been good. I'm sure it will improve quickly though. #amazonaccelerate

The only SEO local service-based businesses need 👇🏼👇🏼 👉🏼 Well-built WordPress website with: Properly structured data, site map submitted to Search Console, individual indexable pages for each service offered, H1's that state what you do and where you are, properly written page titles, easily accessible phone number, contact us and about us page (...and more, it's a long list). 👉🏼 An active, maintained and highly reviewed Google Business profile. Consistently getting 5-star reviews, replying to them, adding photos of your work weekly, posting updates every few days, making sure your categories, hours, and service area are accurate, and listing your offerings. 👊🏼 Bonus: ORGANICALLY acquired backlinks. This means other reputable websites that link back to yours. This could be a local news outlet writing a story about your business and linking to your website, a blogger or reviewer who writes about you or uses you as a source and links back to you, directories such as Yelp, BBB, Chambers of Commerce, etc. This does not mean buying backlinks from a crappy ass link farm. Do enough of that and Google will hold your head under water til you cry uncle, then bury you. 🚫 Missing from this list is a blog. Some will disagree with me but if you are a local service-based business, a blog is a waste of time and resources UNLESS you are a more informational-based business such as lawyers, marketers, therapists, and professional services.

Product I wish existed: Google Doc to Website It would use the new "tabs" feature on Docs to make a full webpage: - Each tab is a menu item. - Each page is content area. - Just update your Doc and site reflects it. Would be easiest way for average person to maintain a website.
