I have been in love with the physical designs Rivian has brought to market since they first launched. The designs have tremendous personality. I disagree with the vision of a future without buttons, relying solely on voice commands. While voice commands can be great for accessibility purposes, it isn't my ideal scenario for navigating the settings and functionality of my car when a quick physical gesture driven by muscle memory can complete the job without distracting me from the road, or interupting a conversation that may be happening in the car or on speaker phone. Am I showing my age or am I showing my wisdom as a designer who has observed countless people interacting with the world around them? Curious to know the opinions of different camps when it comes to this topic of losing our analog inputs. When tactile printing goes wrong…. The paper is heat sensitive which means there are multiple ways to fail. In the laser printer when laying down the basic images. Too cool and ink smears across paper. Too hot and paper begins to react and raise up. In the ZyChem swell printer when raising up images (anything black rises up). Too cool and nothing happens. Too hot and large blocks of diagram rise up while Braille remains too low.

Using combinations of these tools is changing the way things are designed. Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality allow quick iterations to test market response. What could have taken months to modify and make changes takes very little time. Even multiple designs can be shown at one time finding the one that gets the best response.

To me, the separation between digital and physical design in the automotive world is an outdated paradigm. We must approach vehicle design not as the fusion of two isolated disciplines, but as the crafting of an interconnected, cohesive experience from the outset. At the core of this vision is the idea that every physical element in a car should be an invitation to interact with its digital counterpart. In 2014, Tandem worked with #RufusLabs designing this oversized wrist wearing communication device. It might seem insignificant today, but for its time, it was one of the very early ones out there. Personally, I wish the product size could be 40% smaller yet still support 16:9 aspect ratio. This allows people of various sizes wear it with ease and glance at important information on the go. आगे / पीछे In this exploration, I’ve transformed ‘आगे’ (front) into ‘पीछे’ (back) through a mirrored design approach. The transformation relies entirely on the repositioning and rotation of select components—nothing new was added, removed, or altered in dimensions. The bottom text represents the actual backside (mirror image) of the word ‘आगे.’ As the select components of ‘आगे’ are repositioned, its backside seamlessly transforms into ‘पीछे,’ creating a dynamic interplay between the two opposites. The challenge was to preserve legibility for both words while exploring the conceptual duality and interconnectedness of ‘front’ and ‘back.’ This piece invites the viewer to reflect on how subtle changes in form can completely alter meaning.

One of my client’s 3D prints kept on failing. He came to me and we got it sorted! We designed a Grand Cherokee Model for Zach. The body did not print well and kept on breaking apart. I reviewed the design and found a few flaws: ↳ The chassis design was thin and kept on breaking. ↳ The body thickness varied between the front and back.  ↳ The curve on the hood was not as accurate as the original model. ↳ The model needed a rollable mechanism for the tires to roll. Here’s how I fixed the model to print perfectly: ↳ Doubled the chassis thickness so it could take up the whole body. ↳ Matched the Front thickness with the back part by reducing it. ↳ Used surface modeling to rectify the curves of the hood. ↳ Introduced an axle rod between the tires to roll them. The design took a total of 2 weeks including the changes. The client was more than happy to see a miniature version of their Jeep! How do you fix print lines in the model to have a smoother surface? Gotta say that this is some of the best news to happen in the 3D Printing industry in a long time. The only thing better would have been Bre and Fakerbot going the same way before he sold Stratasys a block of rusty metal that wasn't worth the price of cheese in Wisconsin. About 6-7 years into their life span one of the founders, Peter said in an investor meeting "If I knew anything about manufacturing then I never would have started the company." I'm all for trying out new things, in new ways, but it made no sense trying to make 3D Printing cost or produce items at a rate that wasn't sustainable.....ever. Representatives use to go around to the different colleges/universities in New York and tell all of the students that they could 100% meet all of their printing needs which was a really bad look come midterms and finals. Just the shear number of students from NYU, Parsons, Pratt, Columbia, and Cooper Union at just 15% capacity from each would crush that! There were some positive things that came from the Fakeways and Fakebot communities that helped bring people together but in the end it couldn't override the underlying flaws that both companies were offering and ended up causing more damage than not to the industry that now seems to be "self correcting" to bring things back to a baseline level headedness. https://lnkd.in/ej_tVzHj

Here's "iRobot," "Don't Look Up," and "Glass Onion" -- made silicon flesh. It was only a matter of time. You have to admire Musk's vision, but this sends my spider sense tingling. I would be slightly less terrified if Musk himself were less obviously after power, openly peddling Dark MAGA and conspiracy theories. I don't trust his cars, and I trust his robots considerably less. Remember that he fired the Ethics department first and UX second within 24 hours of acquiring Twitter/X. AI is too dangerous to leave it entirely in the hands of business people, data scientists, and power-hungry billionaires.
