The AWRE Sports client list consists of a couple of teams still active in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Playoffs and D1 NCAA National Champions all the way down to High School Programs. How is that possible? Some have begun to ask, as this represents a significant gap in the market. It begins with extremely sophisticated software, wrapped in an intuitive UI/UX, allowing coaches and players at every level to effortlessly use our products. It culminates with ultra-flexible hardware and a proprietary installation process, enabling us to create intricate, custom-installed camera systems regardless of a field’s infrastructure (or lack thereof). USMNT new coach Mauricio Pochettino preaches the ‘gospel of incremental small wins’ One specific example? He instructs his players to sprint forward when the goal kick is played so, if the ball is lost, the opposing team’s attacking player is offsides. A minor tweak that can prove to be a game changer. So minor, it can be easy to skip. Pochettino, who has also coached Espanyol in Spain, Southampton, Tottenham and Chelsea in England, as well as Paris Saint-Germain in France, wants his team to approach those situations with a combination of intensity and intentionality. “It’s going to be extremely valuable,” said Mark McKenzie, a defender for the USMNT. “If you can have that as your foundation, from there you can work on the nuances…When you understand the intensity is required every moment; this will define us. Everyone has to be firing and doing their job to the fullest.” As discussed in The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe’s story, McKenzie explained those small gains translate to HOW players run.   “We even spoke about body movement and how you’re moving,” McKenzie said. “About back-pedaling. If we’re doing that, it doesn’t really allow you to react how you need to. If you’re back-pedaling at high speed and the ball is played in front of you it’s very difficult. But if I’m sprinting at a side angle, I now have the opportunity to slow my steps down and react forward or backward." By integrating these small steps, McKenzie has noticed he and his teammates have subconsciously developed a growth mindset that’s been revealed in the heat of games and may translate to big moments.    “Those small things that you may not see by watching the game outside are important on the field,” McKenzie said. “They give you a split second more to receive the ball or play it. North American teams have consistently been pioneers and trendsetters in the world of basketball. I've had the honor of working with some of the top European Elite teams from the Euroleague, Eurocup, FIBA Champions, and ACB for over eight years. And it's a remarcable journey so far, I need to admit! The University of Utah serves as a shining example and partially explains why North American basketball organizations, in my view, are often several steps ahead of elite European basketball clubs, both strategically and technologically. Consider how the women's teams and their coaches integrate live capturing and coding into their routines—it's not just groundbreaking; it's become the standard. This begs the question: can you name even two Euroleague teams that employ similar techniques? This highlights a significant opportunity for growth in our field. We have a lot of ground to cover to elevate European basketball to the level of North American teams. Thankfully, solutions like Hudl provide all the tools necessary to achieve these advancements. Let's embrace this challenge and make a concerted effort to incorporate these cutting-edge practices into our teams. It's time to learn, adapt, and innovate. Where is the future of Major League Baseball (MLB) headed? In 2024, a staggering 74% of all injury-related days missed were by pitchers, with arm injuries alone accounting for 58%. The financial toll reflects this as well, with MLB teams spending $686 million on injured pitchers this year—$561 million solely due to arm injuries. This rise in pitcher injuries has been building steadily for over a decade. Since 2015, MLB teams have spent $7.5 billion on player injuries, with $3.1 billion on arm injuries alone, which represent over half of all injuries. Pitchers account for 67% of the total days missed. The pandemic undoubtedly disrupted the player development cycle, but since 2021, days missed due to arm injuries have surged from 46% to 58%, and the share of cash lost due to pitchers has risen from 54% to 69%. We’re seeing the impact in the postseason: a shift in availability and depth of quality starting pitchers and a growing reliance on a revolving bullpen. It’s like watching a high-stakes showcase event where endurance and consistency fall behind. MLB knows there’s a problem; I’ve spoken with them on multiple occasions and proposed pilot programs to reduce injury rates. But changing course isn’t easy when the very dynamics that fuel this surge in arm injuries are embedded at every level of baseball. So what’s the solution? Change the rules? Change the game itself? That might be MLB’s simplest path forward. We’re currently on track for pitchers to account for 80% of all missed days in the league, with over 60% due to arm injuries. It’s absurd. Teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees have shown they can handle massive payrolls and stockpile injuries and still make it to the World Series, thanks to depth and top-tier talent. But this dynamic creates a widening gap when big-market teams can afford to overcome injuries, while most small-market teams struggle to develop talent and remain competitive.
