Injuries in the English Premier League (EPL) have reached crisis levels. According to injury analyst Ben Dinnery the 2023-24 season saw an 11% increase in both the incidence and burden of injuries compared to the previous year. The financial toll? Over a quarter of a billion pounds (£266,165,160) spent on salaries for sidelined players. And the injuries keep coming. Just this week, Chelsea Football Club captain Reece James suffered another hamstring injury—a recurring problem for the talented defender. Stories like his aren’t isolated incidents. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 📝 – While injury surveillance is essential for mitigating risks and optimizing athlete development, data specific to elite youth players in Germany was scarce. It was with due to this significant gap in evidence that Weishorn and colleagues (2023) aimed to identify injury patterns, monitor overuse injuries, and evaluate re-injury risks to inform evidence-based prevention strategies, ultimately supporting the health and career progression of young athletes. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: ⚽ A team of 25 players sustained an average of 19.7 injuries per season, with lower extremity injuries, particularly ligament sprains (28%) and muscle strains (19%), being the most prevalent. ⚽ Physeal injuries, accounting for 12% of total injuries, were identified as the most common severe type, leading to an average of 29.7 days of absence. Severe injuries represented 19% of all injuries. ⚽ Although re-injuries comprised only 3% of total injuries, they resulted in significantly more time-loss compared to initial injuries (60 vs. 23 days). 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 1. The findings underscore the need for targeted prevention strategies, including programs like FIFA 11+, focusing on lower extremity strength and stability, which could significantly reduce ligament sprains and muscle strains. 2. Growth monitoring and tailored training regimens during periods of rapid development are vital to reducing overuse injuries, particularly physeal injuries, thereby ensuring sustained athletic performance and career longevity.

There are few worse feelings as a sports scientist than when you have tech set up for integrated data collection / feedback during a training session and it fails. The difference maker is how you respond: - Identify potential user error and improve your methods - Work with vendors to identify causes of technical failure and refine product / processes to improve reliability - Don’t abandon the tech, but maybe scale back the intervention to the point where there is confidence in execution Tech failures can erode trust in “sports science” in general and in you as a practitioner if you do not handle these situations well. Make sure you have enough credibility “banked” with you stakeholders in advance so that you can navigate these situations Be prepared. It’s not a matter of IF, but WHEN
