In March 2024 I started a career working with the Baltimore Police Department. I'll admit, I was very anxious to work with an organization that was so unfamiliar to me, especially as a nonbinary person of color and with the department's history. As a nonbinary person who experiences misgendering multiple times a day, having my pronouns as visible as possible in the workplace is extremely important to me. When I first started working for Baltimore City, I noticed that there were restrictions set in Microsoft (specifically Microsoft Teams) that did not allow me to add my preferred name and preferred pronouns. As a lot of organizations have moved to a hybrid work environment, online meetings have become increasingly routine. I remember going into one of my first online meetings, where I would meet some of new colleagues, and I tried to make an edit to my name which would be displayed in the Teams meeting. I tried to add my pronouns and realized that I couldn't make any changes to my name. Imagine that? Meeting a bunch of new people and the only way they will be reminded of my pronouns is if I explicitly announce them when I introduced myself. That made me even more nervous! Especially in a space where no one else announced their pronouns. And so, I saw a need and I reached out to Baltimore City's Office of Equity and Civil Rights. A few months later, several emails, and countless times of being misgendered in the workplace, Baltimore City finally lifted some of the restrictions in Microsoft, allowing for gender pronouns to be added to individual profiles. While I know that this might seem like a trivial success to some people, this is a huge win for myself and the queer community. Visibility in the workplace and gender affirmation increases one's sense of belonging and I am happy that I could be a part of this change within Baltimore City. This is just the first step! Preferred pronouns are still not a feature within Workday, the city's HR platform, and the only two options for gender are "male" or "female". #nonbinaryawareness #genderaffirmation #pride #baltimorecity

Adult Probation Dist. 1 - CJC Peer Led Trauma Informed brief Restorative Justice Intervention (RJI) “Crime Victims Impact/Emotional Hygiene (Life Skills) class” Saturday – April 13, 2024. How was the class helpful? – “The apology letter showed me how to be effectively for accountable for my harms.”  J. Anderson “The Emotional Hygiene section gave me new skills on how to better manage my ANGER! This was a GREAT CLASS!!” R. Mattson “Understanding the accountability part. Initially I thought I was the only victim. Today I learned who all my harm affected.” D. Harder “This class allowed me to see the big picture of how my harms affected others around me, directly and indirectly.” E. Preez - CJC TRANSFORMING HARM to HEALING to HOPE! Out of the ten (10) justice involved individuals who attended our RJI – 80% demonstrated some level of empathetic response or insight into the effects their actions had on their victims or communities. Police are often the first responders and the main point of contact for the public—whether it’s for directions, reporting issues, or dealing with crime. Building community trust is essential for them to do their job effectively - to earn that trust, police must engage with the community respectfully and display fair and equitable attitudes in their interactions with the public. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Rebuilding Family Connections After Incarceration 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 I had the privilege of facilitating a workshop with incredible agency leaders who are on the frontlines of helping individuals transition from prison back into their children’s lives. Family reunification after incarceration is a delicate process, and with the right support, it can lead to powerful healing. Here are 3 essential tips we shared during the workshop: 1. Start with Open Communication – Honest conversations between parents and children create the foundation for rebuilding relationships. It’s important to acknowledge past pain and create a space for healing. 2. Support Both Sides – Both the parent and the child need emotional and practical support. Agencies must work to address the unique needs of both to foster a healthy reconnection. 3. Incorporate Family Engagement Programs – Providing opportunities for structured family interactions during the transition can help rebuild the bond in a safe, supportive environment. Hot of the Press: The older version of the online course (470), Trauma Informed Approach to Sexual Assault is now closed for enrollment on the TCOLE website. All students must enroll in the new online 4070 course.  If you are currently enrolled in 470, you must complete it by December 31, 2024, or you will lose all progress. In an effort to simplify information, there will no longer be different course numbers for the same course (in-person vs. online).  The online course number 470 will be retired and training will reflect the course number 4070. #texaspolicetrainers

In Honor of National Foster Care Month, we would like to spotlight our Extended Foster Care Unit: Extended foster care under AB12 provides an array of resources for non-minor dependents or extended foster care youth between the ages of 18 and 21 who would otherwise age out of services without any further assistance. Probation officers who supervise these youth provide more than just case management and supervision. The goal of AB 12 is to ensure youth leave foster care with the practical skills to achieve their potential and succeed in life.
