🌱 🌱 Exciting Updates from My Cannabis Cultivation Journey! 🌱 I’m thrilled to share that it’s been ten days since I planted my seeds in the vegging tent, and they’re thriving beautifully! This time, I’m growing two auto-flowering cultivars: Banana Daddy Auto and Zweet Inzanity Durban Auto. As this is my first experience with these cultivars, I’m eager to see the unique characteristics they bring. My previous auto-flower grow yielded an impressive harvest, and I’m applying the same hands-on training techniques — this practice allows me to maximize their potential and ensure a bountiful yield. Moving to my flowering tent, my Biscotti cultivar is progressing well. This is my first time growing Biscotti, and I’m meticulously documenting my observations and insights for future cultivation. One lesson I’ve learned is the importance of balancing nutrient levels for optimal growth. This educational journey has taught me so much, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out! What truly excites me about cultivating cannabis goes beyond the act of growing. It’s about the rewarding experience of nurturing these plants and then enjoying the highest quality cannabis I’ve ever consumed. In a world where many rely on purchased products, I appreciate the ability to produce something truly exceptional from my own garden. This hands-on experience deepens my connection with nature and feeds my passion for continuous learning. I want to emphasize that my goal is purely educational. I don’t sell any cannabis. Instead, I aim to share insights and learnings that can inspire and inform others in the cannabis community. Growing has become a fulfilling journey of discovery, and I’m excited to connect with others who are equally passionate about this practice. Spring is in the air, and the time is almost here to plant cannabis outside! Question: Have you ever grown your own cannabis? And not as a professional farmer, but as a run of the mill, love cannabis but not a green thumb, kind of person? If you have, why do you do it and what has your experience been? If not, why not? I grew my first plant in my closet in Chicago in 1998, with a HPS light that I got for Chanukah (thanks mom and dad!). Armed with a book and not much else, it was trial and error for a while. Now, I enjoy planting my own personal plants every spring and harvesting them in the fall. There is a misconception that growing cannabis is complicated and labor intensive. But it doesn't have to be! Like all plants, cannabis needs soil, light and water to live, and nutrients to thrive (and some love!). Really all you need to get started is a small pot, a clone or seeds and water, and guess what, you are growing cannabis! Yes, you can go deep and get into compost teas and living soil and pruning techniques, but I recommend starting simply and getting to know the plant and the process. If you are a cannabis grower, you are a plant person. In fact you might like hanging out with your plants more than hanging out with people. I get it. Some days I’d much rather spend time in my garden than talk to anyone! 🌼 Plants are pretty simple. Give them the right light, food, water, environment- and love, of course- and they will do their thing. You need more than your plants for your company to succeed though. You need people: staff, contractors, partners, buyers… That’s a lot of relationships to manage, and they don’t always go that well. If only it was as easy to work with people as it is to work with your plants! Let me share a secret with you though. When you think about people like they are plants it gets easier. 💡 With plants you need to give the right care at the right time. Whether it’s light, nutrients, transplanting, or pruning you nurture your plants so they grow strong and give you the harvest you want. It's like that with people too. Relationships you have with buyers and consumers, relationships that you have with staff and with yourself… All of these relationships need to be nurtured like you nurture your plants. Are you currently outsourcing the "cleaning" of your dry cured cannabis? I am hearing costs of $70-100 per lb. 300 lbs weekly @ $75lb= $22,500 weekly to clean the entire batch... at a weed laundromat. The laundromat industry created this model! They wash your clothes by weight if you want to pay the premium! Need your feedback on a campaign I'm cooking on - am I crazy? Grown & Paid in New York. Many of the top selling products in our state are rumored to be made out of state, or even worse - many are 100% KNOWN to be selling NY flower WITHOUT paying their cultivators! This must stop now if we are to have a stable, healthy local market. The concept is simple: a Grown & Paid in NY certification issued by one of the trade organizations in NY. Maybe Cannabis Association of New York would step up to this. Maybe a new organization needs to be formed to certify it. The badge goes to those who can show the receipts for biomass and flower purchased in New York State. If you bought from a NY farmer, and you paid - you're in. The badge gets buy in from dispensaries with a Locally Grown & Paid shelf and we co-op model a budtender training series at every dispensary to make sure we educate the budtenders (the most important and often underpaid and under-appreciated piece of the cannabis supply-retail chain) We then push dispensaries to commit to a percentage of sales for G&P, through Shop Local activation days and awareness campaigns. With such a small market, we cannot afford to be paying farmers in Oregon, Oklahoma or California. The regulators have turned a blind eye because taxes are being collected regardless of the source - but our cultivators, the foundation of New York cannabis - are not being paid.
