The U.S. African Development Foundation (USADF) and the Government of Cabo Verde, through its Ministry of Finance and Business Promotion, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), announcing a five-year, $10 million partnership. Under this MoU, USADF commits to an annual contribution of $1 million for five years, which will be matched by equal contributions from the Government of Cabo Verde, totaling $10 million over the five-year period. This funding will provide grants and technical assistance to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) through various initiatives, including developing agriculture and fisheries value chains, supporting farmers' and fishermen’s cooperatives, providing training and technical assistance, building renewable energy capacity, and enhancing competitiveness in various markets.

The Haitian-American diaspora: A legacy of resilience, innovation and contribution | Opinion BY Dr. Guerda Nicolas The continued news regarding the false claims about Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, demands a counterpoint of truth about the significant role that Haitians play in the United States. In times when immigration is only seen through the lens of crisis and burden, the Haitian-American diaspora testifies to the strength, resilience and undeniable contributions of immigrants to our nation. The Haitian diaspora in the U.S. is the legacy of a people who established the first Black republic in the world after Haiti’s successful revolution in 1804. More than a fight for independence, it was a declaration of universal human rights, freedom and justice. I was a panelist at an event that focused on Mental Health (MH) in the work place and the MH Act 2021. This Act replaced“The Lunacy Act of 1958” in 2023; The fact that it took over 60 years to replace an Act called “The Lunacy Act” where people with MH challenges were referred to as insane, is actually insane and speaks volumes about our approach to MH challenges. This MH Act of 2021 is supposed to represent a landmark achievement for MH care in Nigeria but does it really ? In my opinion it is majorly words on paper and my stance is based on a number of reasons, some of which are: - [ ] The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) does not cover MH which means that if one was to seek help for MH challenges they will have to pay out of pocket. - [ ] MH services are not available in primary healthcare facilities; You will be hard pressed to find a hospital that offers MH services. - [ ] Nothing is being done to create the much needed awareness to help reduce the stigma associated with MH challenges. - [ ] WHO states that only 4% of healthcare allocation is used for MH in a country where statistics have shown that at least 25% of citizens have some form of MH challenge. - [ ] Finally, attempted suicide is still criminalised, this I find completely bizarre. We need a strategic multi level approach that involves not just the government at different levels but also relevant stakeholders to tackle MH related issues, the Mental Health Act 2021 and related issues need to be placed at the front burner of national discourse.

Empowering Liberian Entrepreneurs through Sole Proprietorship Sam Gotomo, Business Consultant, Sunglow Enterprise, October 8, 2024 Entrepreneurship is crucial for Liberia's post-conflict economic growth, with sole proprietorships being the most accessible option. This article explores Liberian entrepreneurship's challenges and potential for sole proprietors. Knowledge and Skills: Growing focus on entrepreneurship education, but limited access to training, informal sector dominance, and skills gaps persist. Initiatives aim to address this. Access to Finance and Markets: Bottlenecks include limited banking, high rates, and collateral needs. Microfinance, mobile money, and government loans help, but gaps remain. Poor information, infrastructure, and low e-commerce hinder market access. Trade facilitation and initiatives aim to improve access. Viable Sectors: Agriculture, mining, services, and technology offer growth opportunities. Growth Potential: Economy driven by FDI, services, agriculture, and infrastructure. Sole proprietorships can create jobs, drive innovation, and promote diversification. Barriers: Regulatory hurdles, corruption, poor infrastructure, skill shortages, and limited tech access.
