With respect to depression, isn’t that the truth? Some of us persevere through it. Unfortunately, there are leaders who lack both the empathy and awareness to simply ask, “Are you okay?”
I recall last year, while dealing with one of two motorcycle fatalities, when my former CO and friend, Captain (Ret.) Greg Baker, picked up the phone and asked me, “How are you doing?” At first, I thought he was asking about how the command was holding up. But he quickly caught on and repeated, “No, how are YOU doing?” Having commanded four times, Greg relied on his experience and recognized the toll that tragic news was taking on one of his COs. My friends, that is a true testament to leadership.
Too often, however, leaders rush to pass judgment, failing to appreciate the immense work and sacrifices their subordinates make day in and day out.
This quick post is a reminder: you can make a meaningful difference in your people’s lives. While they are present, be mindful of your intent when addressing or admonishing someone. Your words could either help uplift them or become the catalyst that pushes them over the edge.
And don’t forget your senior leaders—names like Adm. Mike Boorda, Vice Adm. Scott Stearney, Capt. Wade Wilkenson, Capt. G. Lindsay Perkins Jr., CDR Jonathan Volkle, and others serve as somber reminders. Leadership is about taking care of your people, no matter the rank.
