My team is building these. The conversations these create is so useful to GIS people who want their hard work to become visible to leadership. When you challenge yourself to explain the benefits of your GIS data and analytic capabilities, and you limit yourself to an interactive map visual and a few paragraphs to explain what’s important and current, you are on a good path.

I just put up a discussion on github to try to gather more input on GeoParquet partitioning strategies, see https://lnkd.in/g9HzfzYW. In building the plugin (https://lnkd.in/gCNTg3XQ) to download Geoparquet data in QGIS I found a wide variety of choices made. So I'm hoping to gather input and then make a set of recommendations, that hopefully flow into defaults for tools, and also make a little tool to check adherence to best practices. cc: Jacob Wasserman, Isaac Brodsky, Jia Yu/Matt Forrest, Darell van der Voort/Philippe Raisin

Great reporting from Alice Dreger at Local News Blues about the Medill Local News Map. Great analysis from Ashley Woods Branch. Mapping the local news landscape in the United States is not easy. This is a teachable moment for the whole local news ecosystem in the U.S. and an opportunity to develop data collection and reporting systems that are more equitable and accurate for every community. How can we work together to help make sure local news data is right and news outlets are not omitted from local news maps, especially ethnic news sources that cover communities? A Few Ideas ✅ Talk to NAHJ (National Association of Hispanic Journalists), National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), Indigenous Journalists Association and other national professional news organizations to verify data. ✅ Crowdsource data and provide a public way to gather information from communities themselves across the local news landscape. ✅ Create an editing and fact-check process that enables more diverse view of data. Make sure there are not blind spots. In the words of Nancy West, Executive Editor of InDepthNH.org, “This map is misleading at a time when major funders and investors may be relying on it to make decisions about the future of local news. Unacceptable.” It is hard to get perfect data, but with some creative thinking, innovation, cooperation, and collaboration, the journalism community can get closer to 100 percent, in terms of accuracy and inclusion and representation. This will ensure every community is counted and recognized, and we are telling the whole local news story. #journalism #localnews #community

Cat Hacker. CTS. (Capture the star). What LinkedIn tropes can we put in here? "If you want it bad enough..." "Climb every tree" "Take risks...though it all might crash down around you." "Outpace the competition" (for there were other black cats watching and wishing that they dared to even dream of conquering that tree). This is Nico - we think. (Now he is the star). And if we were better at sales, he'd be the Internet's biggest star. We've snapped photos of him attempting to breach the ceiling fan. Hanging onto window screens with his claws and showing an amused look and his incisors, in all of their glory. He's breached all of our cabinets (we had to re-babyproof the house). Intelligent, curious cats can teach you a lot about risk. So, if you were a curious cat with nine lives and probing into your very small business' risk, what would you find? Probably more than a few downed ornaments and an uprooted tree. Nico is the embodiment of mayhem. What if... If you need someone who thinks like Nico to guide you through the exercise and discussing and documenting both calamaties and possibilites, he's trained me well. And he knows your business uses the Internet. Which means that perhaps he sees you when you're sleeping; it is, after all, the Christmas season. Happy to talk with you. Send me a DM. P.S.
