Gannett | USA TODAY NETWORK reported Q2 2024 financials with it generating $639.8 million in top line revenue, down 4.8% compared to Q2 2023, while digital revenue was up 6.2% year-over-year to $278.4 million. We break down a few key numbers in this analysis, but I thought one thing Gannett's Chief Content Officer, Kristin Roberts, said on the earnings call was very important. "It’s one thing to grow the audience, it’s another to hold that audience and then turn that audience into predictable and repeatable revenue across multiple revenue channels. An increasingly engaged audience really gives us the opportunity to take the next big step which is creating a multi-point monetization journey…" It's all about total monetization. ✅🖥️ Variety (10/2): “NBCU and Charter announced a new multiyear distribution deal that will make the Peacock Premium ad-supported streaming service for “no additional cost” to Spectrum TV Select video customers. The addition of Peacock to the Spectrum TV lineup comes after Charter inked similar deals for Disney+ and ESPN+, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max and Discovery+, Paramount Global’s Paramount+ and BET+, AMC Networks’ AMC+ and Univision’s Vix. All told, according to Charter, through the programming deals reached over the past year, the cable operator will soon provide Spectrum TV Select video customers up to $65/month of retail direct-to-consumer streaming value. Charter is understood to be paying a per-subscriber wholesale fee to the media companies for the rights to bundle their streaming services with Spectrum TV. So while the streaming services are “free” to some of Charter’s cable TV customers, it seems likely that the company will be raising monthly subscription rates to account for the additional linear-plus-streaming programming. Charter also will allow video customers to upgrade to the the ad-free Peacock Premium+ tier. ✅🖥️ Variety (9/30): “Together, DirecTV and Dish would have nearly 20 million customers — a total that is down 63% from their peak levels in 2016, the companies said. DirecTV service had an estimated 11.3 million subscribers (inclusive of AT&T U-verse TV) as of the end of 2023, according to estimates from Leichtman Research Group, compared with a peak of 25.5 million at the end of 2016. Dish, which once had more than 14 million customers, ended the second quarter of 2024 with 8.07 million pay-TV subscribers (including 6.07 million for Dish TV and 2 million for Sling TV). Under the terms of the purchase agreement, DirecTV will acquire EchoStar’s video distribution business, including Dish TV and Sling TV, in exchange for a “nominal consideration” of $1 (yes, one dollar) — plus the assumption of the Dish unit’s net debt with a total face value of approximately $9.75 billion. The companies expect the deal to close in the fourth quarter of 2025. DirecTV launched in 1994 and Dish followed in 1996, and the two satellite TV companies provided robust competition to incumbent cable TV operators. But in the past decade, both have seen their subscribers rolls shrink by the millions (as has traditional cable TV) with the rise of streaming prompting a consumer exodus from the sector. DirecTV and Dish have launched internet-delivered pay-TV packages, but those have not offset losses on the satellite side. By joining forces, DirecTV and Dish will be able to gain some leverage in programming distribution talks. I am interested to see Scope3's response to this. It seems from the article that GARM is endorsing the Good Loop approach and I have to wonder how that is different that what Scope3 does. I know the principles at both companies and will be interested in hearing their take. I would note that "embodied emissions" is what I believe the government calls "Scope 3 Emissions." Though maybe someone in the know can correct me. You could imagine why they gave it a different name. One of the capabilities that we talk about curating on was emissions. Folks come to us for performance and they seem pretty focused. When we bring up emissions, we mostly hear "we want lower emissions, so long as it does not affect performance." Now, one thing we do is that all SWYM inventory is bought directly, so that cuts down on emissions. But I am thinking we should change the offering to constrain the emissions and show performance at varying constraint levels. That is, I am thinking about building a simulation that estimates performance at varying emissions levels.
