Thrilled to read this Op Ed from Girls Who Code CEO, Tarika Barrett, Ph.D., and IBM CEO, Arvind Krishna about the role NY State can play to build the foundation for responsible AI. Both were announced as co-chairs of the Governor’s Emerging Tech Advisory Board at McKinsey’s Future of New York Summit earlier this year – and have since convened a stellar group of regional leaders to grow the AI eco-system in NY responsibly. Their first step was to outline four critical success factors for the region, which will guide their efforts: equity of access, AI and digital skillset training, a nurturing platform for AI innovation, the trust in AI to enable adoption and scale throughout organizations. Enjoyed the discussion with John Furrier at the NYSE. We covered bi-coastal innovation, cloud and AI. The cloud business is experiencing rapid expansion. Q3 ‘24 performance was robust across all 3 hyperscalers driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and increased enterprise demand. Here’s a quick summary of recent earnings announcements: Amazon Web Services reported revenue of $27.5 billion, marking a 19% year-over-year increase. Operating income reached $10.4 billion, up 48% vs YA. AWS maintained its leading position with a 31% share of global cloud. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy noted a “reacceleration” in AWS growth, attributing it to enterprise modernizing their infrastructure and embracing generative AI. Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud segment, which includes Azure, reported $24.1 billion in revenue, a 20% increase year-over-year. Operating income was $10.5 billion, up 18% from previous year. Microsoft held a 20% share of the global cloud. CEO Satya Nadella highlighted advancements in AI-driven applications and infrastructure. Google reported cloud revenue of $11.4 billion, representing a 35% year-over-year growth. Operating income surged to $1.9 billion, up from $266 million in the same period last year. Market share increased to 13% with growth driven by strong demand for AI infrastructure and generative AI solutions. CEO Sundar Pichai noted the company’s commitment to AI innovation. The big story is the growing allocation of capex to build data center capacity to support the AI service expansion. Amazon, Microsoft and Google disclosed they spent a total of $50.6 billion on property and equipment last quarter, compared with $30.5 billion in the same period last year.
