This week saw another milestone in Spain's rapidly evolving rail market, as Ouigo released tickets for its new routes from Madrid to Seville and Malaga. From next month, Ouigo will be the fourth operator on this route bringing full choice to Spain's Southern Corridor. As we have seen so far, the impact of this additional competition will be great for the industry and customers – offering competitive prices, raising standards and service. That means more people are choosing train above plane. It's no wonder other major European rail markets are emulating this approach.

Talgo has delivered its first Avril trains to Renfe following the completion of on-track #testing. The new #rollingstock has accumulated almost 300,000 kilometres in the last year to ensure its full compatibility with all types of #railway lines in #Spain. This includes routes connecting Galicia, Asturias, Catalonia and Valencia. Avril is Talgo’s most advanced #train, aiming to set a new benchmark in the very high-speed #rail market. Each 12-coach, 200-metre-long, single-deck train has a capacity for up to 581 passengers. The units are also 100 percent low-floor at the same height as the platform to allow passengers to easily access the train and move throughout its interior. What’s more, the model has been designed with a reduced weight to lower #energyconsumption and optimise #efficiency. Talgo Avril is part of a highly flexible technological platform. It can automatically change track gauges between Iberian and International and can be equipped with #technology to operate north of the Pyrenees. This enables the model to be used on almost the entire #electrified rail network, paving the way for Renfe to serve more destinations with new high-speed rail #infrastructure. In the future, this will include #international connections between Spain and #France.

Is Spain the new rising railway transportation star? ⭐ A few weeks ago, Spain announced the ban of short-haul domestic flights as part of its global plan to reduce carbon emissions, echoing France’s recent decision. Flights with a rail alternative that takes less than 2 1/2 hours will no longer be allowed, except for connections that link with major hubs to other global destinations – the so-called feeder flights. 🇪🇸 Free travel scheme, high-speed rail investments, liberalization… The Spanish railway market stands as a dynamic arena, which has facilitated the emergence of new rail providers. This environment fosters healthy competition, providing consumers with an extensive range of options and driving innovation within the industry. As an agnostic player, Rail Europe is proud to provide customers with unparalleled access to all of Spain’s rail providers and offers, including Renfe, Ouigo Spain and our new commer, iryo which is now available on RailAPI, RailFlash, RailPortal and our raileurope.com website and app! 👨💻 Cheers to that! 🥂

Renfe to fine Talgo again, this time for technical issues The Spanish operator has on numerous occasions stressed issues with the first ten high-speed trains, which were launched in May (for further information about the trains, go to https://lnkd.in/ejuuab8Z). The majority of reported issues relate to the incorrect operation of electric equipment and doors, while passengers have also highlighted concerns regarding noise and vibration levels. One of the last faults occurred last week, resulting in 494 passengers having to break windows due to a two-hour blackout in hot weather. Renfe stresses that this incident has forced it to commence preparing legal action against the manufacturer. Oscar Puente, Spain’s Minister of Transport, estimates that technical problems have put Avril’s on-time performance at 40.7%, compared with 76.2% for other high-speed trains. The national operator has already initiated legal proceedings against Talgo for the 3.5-year delay in the delivery of the Avril high-speed trains, seeking a fine of €166 mln (see https://lnkd.in/e3rxb3H4 for details). 🚝 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱: 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 🚝 Spain is really an awesome case example for high-speed rail. Fast trains compete with air and competition makes for low prices and soaring passenger numbers as 2023 data shows. Last year, 37% more high speed train tickets were sold in total. Let's take out two routes that stand out: Ⓞ Madrid-Barcelona: 35% more passengers now amounting to 13.8 million per year. This route has existed for years and is considered a mature market. Yet, there was still massive growth. Ⓞ Madrid-Valencia traffic exploded. This route was opened late 2022 for other operators and now both Ouigo and Iryo run trains on these tracks in addition to Renfe. The effects of this competition are amazing: passenger numbers rose by 74% compared to 2022. On the main routes rail now takes a market share (compared to air) of over 80%: Ⓞ Madrid - Alicante 86% Ⓞ Madrid - Barcelona 82% Ⓞ Madrid - Seville 87% Ⓞ Madrid - Valencia 93%. And the good news is: Spain keeps on building new tracks! 🇪🇸🚝 #HighSpeedRail #SustainableTravel #Spain #Transportation #RailIndustry #Innovation #ouigo #avlo #renfe #iryo #highspeed #highspeedtrains #publictransport #competition Source: International Railway Journal (link in first comment)

Did you know that Stockholm's light rail lines—yes, those trusty trams and local trains—are buzzing with close to 200,000 passengers every day? 🚋 That’s nearly half the traffic we see across the entire national railway network, which carries around 500,000 daily travelers across all of Sweden! So next time you hop on a local train in Stockholm, remember: it’s not just the tracks and trains, but also the tech behind the scenes—like Cactus TMS—that keeps our cities moving! 🌱 #smarteningupourrailways
