“I have had the pleasure of working with Alex for nearly a decade. As a Creative Director, Alex possesses an exceptional skill for assembling dynamic teams, consistently ensuring the right people come together to work on a project. I also value his ability to provide feedback across various departments. What truly sets Alex apart is his unparalleled time management skills, allowing us to meet project deadlines without resorting to crunch periods. His leadership is marked by an absence of micromanagement, and he consistently keeps his eye on the big picture, moving projects forward in the right direction. In his role as a Designer, Alex is nothing short of exceptional. He's known for rapid prototyping and a laser focus on the essentials. His feedback is consistently precise, and he's quick to provide innovative solutions to challenges that arise. When I started working with Alex I’d never done formal art direction in games, but Alex not only listened to and respected my opinion but provided access to mentors in my field and emotional support in my skills as I learned. I would see this theme repeat throughout the years with everyone on multiple teams. Even when some people tried to misuse his kindness, he firmly reinforced both the requirement that they treat others with respect while reassuring them that they were skillful enough to do the job. He would also notice when administrative glue tasks were habitually assigned to women on the team and instead insisted on rotating responsibilities fairly across the team. When team members needed time off for mental health or family problems, he both supported them and ensured the project kept moving. This kind of balance of respect and responsibility showcases both Alex’s kindness and willingness to have the hard talks that make a team feel safe and cared for.”

Your game prototype is behind schedule due to external dependencies. How will you steer it back on track?
The game prototype shouldn’t have external dependencies. The purpose of a prototype is to explore the core of the game and a few key unknowns. This can be done with basic shapes, simple interactions and out of the box VFX and sound packages. If you’re engaging external studios you’re either completely lacking execution talents in house or you’re over scoping your prototype. Get out of prototype hell by pruning it to the absolute core, by listing the essential questions and only blocking out those elements. Pick a tiny corner to start your vertical slice and don’t let it bleed into the game until it’s fun!

Dealing with constant changes and iterations in game design, how can you prevent burnout?
Burnout comes from different sources than most people expect: Burnout comes from doing tasks you didn’t opt into of your own free will — or scenarios dragging out without progress. Therefore, if you’re running into iteration burnout - it’s likely because decisions are being made outside of your sphere of influence. Ask if you can take ownership of iteration towards a goal - and chart your own course. In addition, don’t heavily invest into polish and feedback into the core design works. This will minimize sunk costs and encourage you to iterate more cheaply. If these aren’t options you have a leadership problem.
-
What do you do if your attention to detail is questioned in a game design interview?
I've never had someone attack me directly on this topic; but if someone said 'this seems vague and general' - it means they want to translate the concept (high level direction) into actionables (concrete details). This is an important part of game design, and you should be able to do it. Give specific examples of how having a high level philosophy and translating into actionables with the team lead to better results than dictating and micromanaging.
-
What do you do if your attention to detail is questioned in a game design interview?
First off, emotionally release the need for defensiveness. It says more about the interviewer than you that they would make a snap judgement like that. Second, acknowledge any observation that's useful. People lose the will to fight if acknowledged. Then calmly explain that you're starting from a high level perspective first and are happy to drill into details together if it's time for that in the interview.
-
How do you keep your passion as a game designer without burning out?
Game design is creating experiences FOR others, that express an idea YOU wanted them to experience. As a result, to achieve your aims, you need to help them achieve theirs. Create games to provoke an emotion, a memory, train a skill or craft an experience they will be grateful for. The best way to do that is to try your ideas out often and course correct constantly.
-
How do you keep your passion as a game designer without burning out?
The most powerful tool in your toolkit is your notebook. Write down great ideas that don't apply to your current project there. It will keep you from over diving into an idea that isn't yet ripe. As a junior designer you won't have an instinct for when the right time for something is. That's OK, save it for later. The right time WILL come later on.

TONIGHT AT 6:30 PM join us for an improvised version of PVP Circuit and help us rebuild our local community brick by brick. I still can't believe I get to work in the video game industry. My 6-year-old would laugh, and then cry once she realized what it means to work in the creative technology sector. That's why IMO everyone could use some levity during these unprecedented times. Join us for a fun evening to raise funds for the Trevor Project. Event link >>> https://lnkd.in/g7tBuP6d Frequently Asked Questions: What if I can't attend the event? - If you can't make it, please consider purchasing a ticket to help us raise money for charity or get one on behalf of someone impacted by layoffs. What if I want to join but can't justify the cost? - If you want to join but find the cost prohibitive, DM me and we'll make it happen (see point above). Do I have to pitch at the event? - No, you don't have to pitch if you prefer to observe. It’s a great way to see how it's done. Will there be another event like this? - We plan to host our community again, but I can't specify if this event will be the focus. #gamesindustry #event #comedy <3

I am very sorry to learn of two additional cuts that happened in games this week: Lively Studio had a "small number of layoffs" while Armor Games Studios laid off its publishing team. Both claims were widely reported across major games press. If your job has been impacted by these closures, please utilize the support available through our three platforms. Specifically, I suggest exploring the Games Org Support Posts in Home 1. These resources have a proven track record of effectiveness, backed by extensive data. There are no simple answers, but our community's primary aim is to ease the burden for as many individuals as possible. Our data shows that for all candidates, your chances of securing a role in the gaming industry double (from 6% to 12%) over 12 months if you consistently use all our resources compared to not using them. I'm truly sorry about this news, and as always, I will do my best to take action rather than just expressing concern. Home 1 - 🔗 AMIRSATVAT.COM: This is our main hub offering 18 resources to help you find employment, with a fully updated design. - 🔗 Games Org Support Posts: You can find a template at AMIRSATVAT.COM (Category 4, Resource 10). If you can provide information from your team (with their consent), I'll assist in editing and disseminating the final post to reach over 400,000 unique viewers per month. These posts significantly boost visibility, and we've completed 102 of them. Home 2 - 🔗 Discord: Join us at discord.gg/amirsatvat, our live extension of community resources. Games industry DESPERATELY needs to unionize. Since December my LinkedIn feed has been a sea of people looking for work because they've been laid off, due to the "business strategy" of laying people off when you want to look more profitable in Q1 of the next year, or just "trimming the fat"/ "improving efficiency". I won't say my experience was exactly like this necessarily, but I was recently laid off in January, though I haven't marked myself as looking for work due to many reasons, partly being the lack of jobs, all the bots and spam on this website, and the crushing damage to my self-confidence. Either way, NO ONE should be made to feel this way. I've even heard of people getting laid off mid parental leave, or while they're on vacation with limited internet access, THIS IS DESPICABLE. What's worse is in this industry we all experience imposter syndrome, and anytime this happens you can't help but think we're terrible at our jobs, if only you'd worked harder, spent more of your own time improving your skills, you would be essential enough to the company to keep on, but they still could let you go, so it doesn't even matter. CEOs or in general the entire C-suite of people should be held accountable and publicly shamed. If your business strategy is to hire as much talent as possible, realize you can't keep on all that talent, and then lay them off, then you are incompetent, and should not be given a pat on the back for at least giving severance, when you're just following the lowest requirements of the law. The people who you've laid off are people who have built your company and kept the lights on. You can't just use the excuse, "that's just the way the industry is", that's a weak excuse. There are industries that experience frequent lay offs but have a union and support, such as some plants in the auto industry, and the workers have fought hard for years so that they would have those benefits and salary top-ups. Of course that's not always the case and things could be better, but we shouldn't just sigh and be like "it is what it is", and keep trying to work within the system when the system is broken. I'm just mad right now, for myself, but mostly for my friends, and people I don't even know that work in this industry, because I know these devs are hard working people that are constantly learning and trying to improve, and they are now doubting all their skills and feeling like they're not good enough. As for the people who make these mass lay off decisions a regular occurrence, I would like to say something that may even hurt my career and job opportunities, but deserves to be said, and which many devs would like to say or even scream, Fuck you.

Hello friends. Last month, I was looking for more work and finally secured some on Reddit from a guy who needed help with preproduction on his Tabletop RPG / Card Battler. After a meeting with him, he showed me what he had and it was quite impressive. He had a prototype of a card-battler using a tabletop RPG battle system, but he had little to no documentation or planning—he's been chiseling away at his game for a few months in his spare time after work. I suggested that before I dive into art, we flesh out the game design and the rest of the game up to around an 80% mark and let the last 20% be changes, additions, and that sort. As your game evolves, it'll come into it's own and you'll find things that need changed or added, this accounts for that. He agreed and I asked if I could work on all this since I did that with my game Alligori and lead the team from start to finish with our vertical slice, and I know tabletop RPGs very well. He agreed and we did the whole song and dance with paperwork, and he sent over a retainer and I began work the following Monday. Three weeks go by and we're working great together. I'm fleshing out his game, adding some meat to the backbone of his prototype with classes, abilities, etc. My goal was to write out as much as possible and then trim content to fit it into a 1-year development cycle. So I flesh a bulk of his game out, and then categorize it more into a game design document that clearly conveys concepts, ideas, and mechanics. Catching up, last week was the final week of my first month and payment was due. He just up and disappears like a fart in the wind, I have no idea if he's alive, incarcerated, on vacation, or what. He didn't remove me on Discord, so I don't entirely suspect malicious intent, but he gave no notice. That's the risk you run with working 1-on-1 with a client remotely, one day they can just up and disappear. I do have paperwork, so I may pursue legal action. If he doesn't log on by Friday, I'm going to publicly release all my documentation and the GDD I wrote on here.

I'm so sorry to report another games job cut, this time at Mighty Kingdom, as reported by the company itself and resulting in a "28% reduction in workforce" https://lnkd.in/eBBFa-Tj Here's where this puts us. I continue exposing these statistics regularly as a reminder of the human cost of these decisions: 100+ games layoffs in 2024 One games layoff situation on average every 1.3 days in 2024 (apologies for getting this inverted in the picture) Over 10,000 games layoffs in 2024 YTD Within ~450 cuts of hitting 2023's games layoff number...in May If you were in fact affected by these cuts, I have no words to express my feelings. However, our community has three resource "homes" built to help you: HOME 1 - 🔗 AMIRSATVAT.COM: Our hub offering 15 resources to help you find work, including a fully updated design. - 🔗 Games Org Support Posts: Find a template at AMIRSATVAT.COM (Category 4, Resource 10). If you can provide information from your team (with their consent), I’ll help edit and disseminate the final product, reaching 100,000+ people. These posts are highly effective in increasing visibility and we have done 96 of them. HOME 2 - 🔗 Please visit discord.gg/amirsatvat to join our Discord, a live extension of our community resources. With nearly 2,800 members, we are in an open-join phase. HOME 3 - 🔗 LinkedIn: Our community here includes nearly 87,000 members, with 1-3 daily posts offering support and career assistance in the games industry. To our broader community, your involvement makes a difference. Here’s how you can help: - Spread the word: Reshares and comments on this post amplify the visibility of these resources. - Offer support: Utilize the 13 ways listed on AMIRSATVAT.COM under "How You Can Help" to assist, or simply lend an ear or advice on our Discord server. - Join our movement: Volunteer with us at AMIRSATVAT.COM to support our colleagues in the games industry. Our network has facilitated over 1,800 jobs and 33,000 coaching conversations to date and has been visited by over 3,000,000 gamers lifetime. Happy Wednesday all, or at least it would be if not for yesterday's news. Let's get into the round-up, then. 1. Microsoft shutdown four studios, including BAFTA-award winning Tango Gameworks who recently released "Hi-Fi Rush" and Arkane Austin. The loss of these studios is huge, make no mistake. I've not written on it yet as it was my news partner-in-crime who grabbed it for PSU but I've plenty of thoughts brewing, and you might see something from me soon. https://lnkd.in/gGy7MzyG 2. I covered a couple of the events regarding the Helldivers 2 PSN account linking controversy, but then I thought it would be worth putting everything together in one, clear explainer piece of what happened and what's still going on - so I did! https://lnkd.in/gMdJcfT8 3. More news regarding poor decisions made by games industry executives, Activision reportedly rejected a pitch from Vicarious Visions prior to merging the team entirely into Blizzard for a Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3+4 Remake. Activision instead wanted VV to focus efforts on supporting Call Of Duty & Diablo, which I don't think I can find to be anything less than depressing. Not because I'm a huge THPS fan, but because I find it so short-sighted to go from publishing a diverse string of games to only publishing a few behemoths that have shown they have chips in their 'forever-game' armour. Perhaps I've got more to say on this as well. https://lnkd.in/gYGPFiWH 4. This one's for me, because I've put 1000+ hours into Apex Legends, and the now current season is once again changing the game forever. I've had peaks and valleys with Apex over my time with it, and I'm glad that Respawn is continually trying to keep things fresh with these last two seasons of large, sweeping changes and new modes. https://lnkd.in/g9w5xBhj 5. Lastly, Ubisoft's guitar-learning game turned subscription service Rocksmith+ will arrive on PS5 and Steam in June. I was a big Guitar Hero/Rock Band-head back in the day, and Rocksmith played a key role in my journey to start playing guitar. I'm not sure I'll jump in right away, but I'm glad to see it finally make a console debut, I think tools like Rocksmith+ are great and easy ways to get people into playing and making music. https://lnkd.in/geUTveUd That's all for now, though I do want to leave you with a question to DM me about or answer in the comments: who do you think won the rap beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake? I see a clear winner, and I want to know if LinkedIn is on the ball when it comes to these big issues. Until next time!

I interviewed our Casting Director and this was the clear takeaway... Voice Actors often ask me "how can I break into video games work." I thought this advise was brilliant 👇 - Actors who are also active gamers seem to get cast in games a lot! - However, Casting Directors aren't specifically looking for this - These actors tend to have a great understanding of the material - They instinctively know how a line or an effort should be performed - They have an enthusiasm & passion for the work - They are often easier to direct and are familiar with the language I am by no means suggesting an actor has to be a gamer to be a voice actor in games! But, if this is an area of the industry an actor wants to get into... Consider getting into the industry via this area... Do those last two lines make sense? I was trying to be clever! #VoiceActing #GameAudio #Develop2024

Good morning, friends. A topic I often discuss with many of you regarding game job searches is the importance of not fixating on a dream company. Many of you ask, "It's not that easy. There's this place I've always wanted to work at. What do you really mean by this?" Let's unpack this a bit. You don't truly know what a dream company is until you're in the job process and have vetted the organization. It's not about good or bad companies; it's about whether the job's attributes align with what you and your family are looking for. For example, you know how much I love Nintendo and Blizzard. People often ask, "If you're so into Nintendo and Blizzard, why don't you work there?" These are fine places to work, but let's break it down. First, Blizzard and Nintendo, at my seniority level, don't allow remote work and haven't for as long as I know, certainly since I graduated college. This makes it impossible for me to work there even if I wanted to. Secondly, both companies are strict about what staff posts on social media and the types of activities they engage in outside of work. I'm fortunate that at Tencent, my employer supports my current work situation and is exceptionally supportive of my community involvement and personal expression, as long as I do it in my personal time. They understand how important this is to me and acknowledge that, after my family, it's the most important thing in my life. They recognize that people can schedule posts or do things in the evening, making it appear as though there is content throughout the day, even if it's not done during work hours. These may seem like small things, but if your number one hobby is a big part of your life, it's significant. If work location is non-negotiable, that's crucial too. Loving a company's games, IPs, or imagining yourself there is great, but as life progresses, you'll find that the focus shifts from macro to micro details - what the work environment is like, how they approach work-life harmony, and other external factors. I'll always be a fan of many companies, advocating for them, supporting them, and loving their titles. But for my current needs and my family's needs, Tencent Games is my dream company situation. You may also find that as your needs and your employer's needs change, your dream company might become another. So, I encourage you not to think about this concept in the abstract. When you dig in, it all comes down to the particulars.

Our goal is to get an Epic Games MegaGrant & additional funding to devlop (Blackpoint BR) on the Unreal Engine. Helping develop infrastructure and definitely need opportunities have helped build the confidence in Epic Games & Fortnite & the value of experience it can bring to a city, county, state a nation, internationally, globally. If didn’t develop the Jump Ahead Esports competitions and go Chicago to the Esports Trade association I wouldn’t be in this position. Developing video games on Fortnite that will be on PS5, PC, Xbox, Steam, Nintendo. One day Blackpoint is going to be a global video game studio creating that longevity the video game industry, and Esports industry needs. #GlobalGoals #EpicGames #UnrealEngine #Fortnite #Economics #Blackpoint #VideoGames #Esports #Billions #PS5 #PC #xbox #Steam #GameDesign #FortniteCreative

I started Gold Standard Gaming in 2017 after recognizing a ceiling at my current job (which was Eleague). I didn't KNOW exactly what I wanted to do, but I had ideas and I had motivation. I knew A LOT of people in gaming culture because I had been to 50+ gaming events from.... MLG in Columbus to Final Round in Atlanta to Pax Prime in Seattle to E3 in LA. 🎮. 📷📸🎥🚈✈️ I knew I like connecting with people and helping. 🫱🏻🫲🏾 I knew I liked discussing marketing strategies.🎨📈 I knew I liked the hype surrounding events. 📢📢 I took those passion points and started an LLC. ✅ No funding, only... Pivots Persevering Pushing (And a lotta Ramen) 🤣🤣 In 2021 we got hot... In 2022 took off🚀🚀 and got our first 6 figure client Through our core values, which internally we refer to as "The Gold Standard" we just always try to treat all of our clients, products, stories and events like they are our OWN and when it comes to getting stuff done.... DO NOT take no for an answer. I couldn't have gotten this far without Marcus "Esports" Howard Kathryn De Shields-Moon, MFA Aishwarya Shinde Sanjay Yadav Adesoji Ige Shreya Singh This thread did pretty well on Twitter so I thought you might want to take a look. Hopefully, it helps you on your journey. 😎 #Esports #Entrpereneurship #Education #Gaming #Startup

I'm packing for gamescom today. Here's my gamescom EDC (everyday carry): I'm leaving for Cologne this afternoon. And while I have all my stuff out, I thought I'd share the list of things that I never leave my hotel without. Here's all the stuff I bring to survive gamescom on easy mode: 📓 Notebook + pen When you meet so many people every day, it helps to take notes. If at all possible, I prefer to do it the old school way. 📱 iPad This has my coaching deck ready to go at any moment, in case I need it during a conversation. Also, it has all of my books, which is handy when I'm winding down before going to bed. 🔋 Battery pack and charger cable(s) Gamescom days are long, and batteries don't always last. Bringing a battery pack ensures I always have enough charge to find my hotel at the end of the day. 🚰 Water bottle When you're running from meeting to meeting, it's easy to forget about your physical needs. Having a water bottle means I don't dehydrate myself by accident, and it's easy to get a refill from the tap. 🍫 Protein bars You never know how far away your next real meal is, and these bad boys ensure I don't starve in between. PLUS, I get a decent amount of protein during the day. 🍊 Vitamin C throat pastilles Talking for 10+ hours a day is hard on your throat. Popping a strepsil provides some relief, and gives me a nice vitamin C boost at the same time. 🤧 Tissues Being among so many people for so long, you're bound to catch *something*. Wiping my nose with a tissue beats sniffing my way through an important meeting. 💊 Paracetamol Sometimes it's something you caught, and other times it's dehydration (too little water or too much Kölsch 😅). Never hurts to have some paracetamol ready. 🩹 Blister pads I only bring well-worn shoes to events. All the same, sometimes I get a blister or two from being on my feet for so long. These can make the difference between a day that is absolutely horrid, or perfectly fine. 😎 And finally, sunglasses At some point in the distant past, gamescom has made a pact with the devil to make gamescom the hottest, sunniest week of the year, every year. Sure, we're indoors for most of the day, but sunglasses are a must for the walk back to town, and lounging on a terrace on the Heumarkt in style. And that's all the stuff in my bag! What's in yours? P.S. Don't be afraid to tap me on the shoulder during the event if you're in need of any of my supplies. I've usually got plenty of strepsils, paracetamol and blister pads to go around.
