Games industry DESPERATELY needs to unionize. Since December my LinkedIn feed has been a sea of people looking for work because they've been laid off, due to the "business strategy" of laying people off when you want to look more profitable in Q1 of the next year, or just "trimming the fat"/ "improving efficiency". I won't say my experience was exactly like this necessarily, but I was recently laid off in January, though I haven't marked myself as looking for work due to many reasons, partly being the lack of jobs, all the bots and spam on this website, and the crushing damage to my self-confidence. Either way, NO ONE should be made to feel this way. I've even heard of people getting laid off mid parental leave, or while they're on vacation with limited internet access, THIS IS DESPICABLE. What's worse is in this industry we all experience imposter syndrome, and anytime this happens you can't help but think we're terrible at our jobs, if only you'd worked harder, spent more of your own time improving your skills, you would be essential enough to the company to keep on, but they still could let you go, so it doesn't even matter. CEOs or in general the entire C-suite of people should be held accountable and publicly shamed. If your business strategy is to hire as much talent as possible, realize you can't keep on all that talent, and then lay them off, then you are incompetent, and should not be given a pat on the back for at least giving severance, when you're just following the lowest requirements of the law. The people who you've laid off are people who have built your company and kept the lights on. You can't just use the excuse, "that's just the way the industry is", that's a weak excuse. There are industries that experience frequent lay offs but have a union and support, such as some plants in the auto industry, and the workers have fought hard for years so that they would have those benefits and salary top-ups. Of course that's not always the case and things could be better, but we shouldn't just sigh and be like "it is what it is", and keep trying to work within the system when the system is broken. I'm just mad right now, for myself, but mostly for my friends, and people I don't even know that work in this industry, because I know these devs are hard working people that are constantly learning and trying to improve, and they are now doubting all their skills and feeling like they're not good enough. As for the people who make these mass lay off decisions a regular occurrence, I would like to say something that may even hurt my career and job opportunities, but deserves to be said, and which many devs would like to say or even scream, Fuck you.

I am very sorry to learn of two additional cuts that happened in games this week: Lively Studio had a "small number of layoffs" while Armor Games Studios laid off its publishing team. Horrible news today with nDreams conducting a round of layoffs that could impact 17.5 percent of employees. The company said a "challenging VR games market" requires a "renewed strategic focus" that will result in job cuts. nDreams operates four studios and is known for working on titles like Far Cry VR, Fracked, Phantom: Covert Ops, and Synapse. According to the nDreams website, it currently employs over 250 people across a variety of hybrid and fully-remote roles. Good morning, friends. A topic I often discuss with many of you regarding game job searches is the importance of not fixating on a dream company. Many of you ask, "It's not that easy. There's this place I've always wanted to work at. What do you really mean by this?" Let's unpack this a bit. You don't truly know what a dream company is until you're in the job process and have vetted the organization. It's not about good or bad companies; it's about whether the job's attributes align with what you and your family are looking for. For example, you know how much I love Nintendo and Blizzard. People often ask, "If you're so into Nintendo and Blizzard, why don't you work there?" These are fine places to work, but let's break it down. First, Blizzard and Nintendo, at my seniority level, don't allow remote work and haven't for as long as I know, certainly since I graduated college. This makes it impossible for me to work there even if I wanted to. Secondly, both companies are strict about what staff posts on social media and the types of activities they engage in outside of work. I'm fortunate that at Tencent, my employer supports my current work situation and is exceptionally supportive of my community involvement and personal expression, as long as I do it in my personal time. They understand how important this is to me and acknowledge that, after my family, it's the most important thing in my life. They recognize that people can schedule posts or do things in the evening, making it appear as though there is content throughout the day, even if it's not done during work hours. These may seem like small things, but if your number one hobby is a big part of your life, it's significant. If work location is non-negotiable, that's crucial too. Loving a company's games, IPs, or imagining yourself there is great, but as life progresses, you'll find that the focus shifts from macro to micro details - what the work environment is like, how they approach work-life harmony, and other external factors. I'll always be a fan of many companies, advocating for them, supporting them, and loving their titles. But for my current needs and my family's needs, Tencent Games is my dream company situation. You may also find that as your needs and your employer's needs change, your dream company might become another. So, I encourage you not to think about this concept in the abstract. When you dig in, it all comes down to the particulars.

It is awful. Truly awful. Around 15% of Intel Corporation's staff (meaning over 15,000 people) are facing layoffs this year. I want to provide as much support as I can about this happening. I know that Intel is not a games studio, but the amount of support they are giving games studios is not to be under-estimated. When I worked at other games studios in the past, we had wonderful working relationships with them, getting support through driver optimisations, supporting technical tests, even offering to feature our games on their network and providing exclusive access to gamers to our closed alpha or closed beta tests. This kind of relationship was special. Regardless of which areas of Intel are going to feel layoffs, with 15% of the workforce, that will be felt everywhere in the organisation. Hello friends. Last month, I was looking for more work and finally secured some on Reddit from a guy who needed help with preproduction on his Tabletop RPG / Card Battler. After a meeting with him, he showed me what he had and it was quite impressive. He had a prototype of a card-battler using a tabletop RPG battle system, but he had little to no documentation or planning—he's been chiseling away at his game for a few months in his spare time after work. I suggested that before I dive into art, we flesh out the game design and the rest of the game up to around an 80% mark and let the last 20% be changes, additions, and that sort. As your game evolves, it'll come into it's own and you'll find things that need changed or added, this accounts for that. He agreed and I asked if I could work on all this since I did that with my game Alligori and lead the team from start to finish with our vertical slice, and I know tabletop RPGs very well. He agreed and we did the whole song and dance with paperwork, and he sent over a retainer and I began work the following Monday. Three weeks go by and we're working great together. I'm fleshing out his game, adding some meat to the backbone of his prototype with classes, abilities, etc. My goal was to write out as much as possible and then trim content to fit it into a 1-year development cycle. So I flesh a bulk of his game out, and then categorize it more into a game design document that clearly conveys concepts, ideas, and mechanics. Catching up, last week was the final week of my first month and payment was due. He just up and disappears like a fart in the wind, I have no idea if he's alive, incarcerated, on vacation, or what. He didn't remove me on Discord, so I don't entirely suspect malicious intent, but he gave no notice. That's the risk you run with working 1-on-1 with a client remotely, one day they can just up and disappear. I do have paperwork, so I may pursue legal action. If he doesn't log on by Friday, I'm going to publicly release all my documentation and the GDD I wrote on here.

Here is a hard truth, for narrative folks and non-narrative folks who deal with narrative folks alike. Game narrative professionals create assets. They are assets that are coded, not in a programming language, but in a written language. Regardless, they are assets - a usable part of the game. Narrative types need to understand that their work does not exist in a special, unique place (though it does often call for unique process, which I will get into another time). It needs to be created on schedule in a usable format and it needs to reach a certain quality bar. The trick is, sadly, that the quality bar for writing is awfully subjective in a way that the quality bar for other types of assets are not. It is the great unspoken truth of the game writing community that not every game writer is great or even good; it is the great unspoken truth of the production side of things that most people don't know how to write on a professional level or how to critique professional writing in a useful, actionable manner. Note: I am not dumping on anyone here. I am, however, calling on writers who are not yet at that quality bar to do what they can to improve their craft so that the overall level of work being produced is better. And I am calling on people who are not writers to understand that their judgment may not always be informed or correct, and that the task is a professional one that requires the same iteration, time, investment and skill that coding or models or textures or UI elements or anything else does. I will be blunt; I have worked on too many projects where there is an assumption that writing is somehow magic that can be conjured at an instant's notice, fully formed and final like Athena from Zeus' brow. I write a mean first draft - I have to - but my second draft is always going to be better, and if you don't give me time for one, you're only hurting the project. So we all need to come together on this. Writers who think their craft exists beyond the bounds of the project need to be reined in to understand they are part of the team, and subject to fulfilling its needs. Producers and other folks who think that narrative assets are somehow easier and faster to create at a professional level of quality than anything else need to actually scope narrative tasks, understand their impact and needs, and treat them like any other deliverable on the project. I have seen too many "We go into the studio Thursday - can you write the game" emails in my time from people who then turn around and want to know why it wasn't Shakespeare out of the chute to let it slide without comment any more. And if your first response to this is to get mad, ask yourself why. Everyone's responsibility is to the game, to make it as good as possible. Sometimes that means eating crow, learning something, and improving the way you approach things. Sometimes it means calling out others who won't. But letting the status quo chug merrily along serves no one.

Tip for publishing consideration submission to Midwest Games... tldr - Send info through our portal (https://lnkd.in/gWtKgpuU), not through email (or LI). I get that it's a little counter-intuitive...you might think you want to put your info right in front of the sourcing decision influencers' faces. But it's actually a disadvantage - especially those of you who are agents throwing multiple titles at us at once. The submission portal goes right to our database, and that database is there for a reason: to keep an organized and consistent record of all submissions in one place. I look through there all the time. I'm reminded of titles I may have overlooked or need to go back to consider as circumstances change all the time. We rarely, if ever, make immediate decisions or even quick deep review/consideration. Our factors for consideration shift regularly. I do not review your particular email regularly, or at some point even remember you sent one. I go to the database. Connection via other channels is good. Discussion about your game over other channels is good. But having your core game info in those channels is not good. Please use the submission portal!

"Required: X titles shipped" I've been involved in a few conversations lately with aspiring or junior developers who are frustrated that so many job descriptions require shipped titles. It gets even more difficult when a JD requires specific types of games shipped. These job seekers become more infuriated to find out that a lot of recruiters or hiring managers don't really count their game jam titles or solo games as "shipped" for purposes of these roles. Why is that? What exactly are hiring managers looking for here? Does it even matter? To answer that last question first: yes. It matters. First off, let's be clear on a couple of things here. As a general rule, you shouldn't be seeing shipped title requirements in true entry level positions. In those cases, any experience is better than no experience, so you should call out your jam, student, or solo games whenever you don't have anything else to show (or just call them out anyway if you're still relatively new or you're particularly proud of something you've worked on or built). But the reason you see a lot of jobs asking for shipped titles is less about the end result and more about showing that you've got experience working in a particular environment. If I'm asking, it's because I want to know that you can work on a team in the first place. You've been through the process already and have gone through the reviews and planning sessions and discussions that you simply wouldn't get building a game on your own or even in a quick jam. I've been through this a lot, with games that shipped and those that unfortunately did not. I've seen it on tiny teams where we could fit everyone in a single room and the entire schedule took months to teams which numbered in the hundreds across continents with multiyear schedules and the differences are very real. I've seen how different it can be in having to ship a boxed game through first party submissions or maintaining a liveops MMO that only existed on PC or mobile. Different processes. Different tools. Different methodologies. Different scales. I know how rough the market is out there. I know it seems hopeless at times and utterly unfair. I know it can really hurt to find a role you think you're just perfect for but then you see they want "shipped titles" experience or you need to have "worked on AAA teams" or "must have liveops experience" and it just doesn't make sense. Your challenge is in trying to show how you have the skills without the direct experience, while also competing against others (potentially dozens of others) who already have both. I wish the process could be easier for you. At the least, I hope I've added some context from the other side of the table here.

Valve corporation has implemented updates to Steam's store page system to enhance discoverability for developers. These changes were made in response to feedback received from developers, including discussions at Gamescom. Key Changes: 👉 Related Items Customization: Developers can now choose which games appear in the "More From this Developer" section of a game's store page. 👉 DLC Pinning: Developers can highlight a specific DLC item to draw attention from players. 👉 Flexible Customization: Developers have control over the order of related games and can manually adjust their position. These new features provide developers with greater control over how their games are presented on Steam.
