I interviewed our Casting Director and this was the clear takeaway... Voice Actors often ask me "how can I break into video games work." I thought this advise was brilliant 👇 - Actors who are also active gamers seem to get cast in games a lot! - However, Casting Directors aren't specifically looking for this - These actors tend to have a great understanding of the material - They instinctively know how a line or an effort should be performed - They have an enthusiasm & passion for the work - They are often easier to direct and are familiar with the language I am by no means suggesting an actor has to be a gamer to be a voice actor in games! But, if this is an area of the industry an actor wants to get into... Consider getting into the industry via this area...
Perfectly said! 😄 One thing I was talking about the other day with video game effects, if you ask a non-gamer VA to make a hurt noise for a first person shooter, you might get something a little over the top for the genre, as it'd need to be quick, less intense and not too annoying if your player character is getting sprayed with bullets every few seconds. 🤔 Seems like there's a big technical understanding to match to the genre to know the right style, not impossible, but people familiar with the genres would have a big advantage
It really helped in a recent session that I knew the genre and style of game, it let us create a sort of short hand that got us through the hundreds of lines of dialogue nice and quickly.
Even though I've played games my whole life of course, I remember being hesistant to audition for gaming roles because I didn't consider myself a 'gamer'.
Nothing more to add, you've put it quite succinctly! 100% Agree with evertything here.
I got back into gaming after I booked my first video game job many years ago. I’d loved gaming as a kid but fell out of playing. Now I’m well back into it and can’t believe the variety and amazing development that’s out there. Gaming is amazing!
Good post, however, it could mean that the 'gamers' copy what they have heard rather than bring something original. Today I read a female voice actor got a role by beat boxing a song's lyrics. Which is unusual but great! And highly original:)
Very true. I'm constantly commenting on how awesome video games voice actors are these days. Ya'll are killing it!!
Thanks, this is a great tip, I’m Not a gamer, but I love creating characters and so I have always had this issue! Interesting 🧐
Legit Stephen. Even if teams aren't specifically looking for gamers, they'll implicitly have an unfair advantage over others.

4dThis is very validating! Knowing what's current in any genre of VO is important, and when you're part of someone's immersive experience, a lack of appropriateness and authenticity is going to be jarring to the player. As much as I'd like to play more games myself, I've been a solid backseat gamer, content to watch and absorb (and comment and cheer on) hundreds of hours of gameplay while someone more proficient at actually playing is at the controls.
