The occurrence of extreme-heat events is unprecedented in the observed record and will grow with increasing global warming according to the Sixth Assessment report by IPCC. To address the risks that arise from these increased temperatures, Athens has developed a three pillar approach of: Awareness ➡️ Preparedness ➡️ Redesign In this video, Karl Astbury from Resilient Cities Network, shares how Athens is using this approach to make the city more resilient towards heat.

In 2023, wildfires devastated the lives and livelihoods of Tacana communities in Bolivia. These communities expected La Niña to bring floods but instead they were faced with wildfires that destroyed approximately fifty-seven hectares of farming systems. These systems, many of which had been rebuilt following previous flood events, were established to provide food security, strengthen the economy and environment, as well as increasing resilience. Formed as part of Practical Action's flood resilience work in Bolivia, community brigades did not have the knowledge to fight these devastating fires. However, by using a community base, community members were able to organize themselves and work together to achieve timely first responses and evacuations during the wildfires. Although urban areas are a key contributor to global carbon emissions, they are also adversely impacted by climate change effects, including extreme heat and the urban heat islands effect. Last month, representatives from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC attended and presented at the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt to share experiences from the Urban Climate Resilience Program and the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance. At the centre of the event was the idea that urban communities represent both a challenge and opportunity for transformative resilience building. Incidents of extreme heat are increasing in frequency and intensity, especially for those whose social or economic circumstances put them at greater levels of risk. The Climate Resilience Measurement for Communities (CRMC) is a data-driven process, complemented by a web-based tool and mobile app, which helps communities to evaluate and measure how resilient they are to climate hazards. Using the results, they can identify and implement resilience-building interventions and run additional measurements to track improvements. Local resilience agents can enhance the ability of a community to take risk-informed anticipatory action and increase the capacity of the community to manage their risks. In addition to being trained on flood preparedness, livelihood protection, response and recovery, the training of local resilience agents also brings other benefits to communities such as: 🙌 Community empowerment, especially for women. Many local resilience agents that Practical Action works with are now working as local entrepreneurs and/or are members of community-based organizations. 👧 Greater recognition for women's and girls' rights. 🤝 Institutional linkages being formed when local resilience agents become members of the local union disaster management committee and union parishad.
