What does a 53' mobile beverage production facility have to do with creating one of the fastest-growing cannabis beverage brands? To navigate the state-by-state regulations posed by the regulated cannabis market, co-founder Angus Rittenburg of Wynk™ designed what would become the brand's original solution to crafting THC seltzers with co-packing partners in each state. In our closing U.S. of N/A episode of this season, we talk with Angus on the brand's origins, how the space has so quickly evolved, and what's next for Wynk as they continue to innovate in a nascent sector that isn't slowing down anytime soon. “It’s impossible to keep up with Gen A and Gen Z slang, but apparently, ‘mid’ is a bad thing. It’s like, you’re so mid.” Spoken by co-founder Ryan Kutscher of Dad Strength Brewing during our podcast conversation in the summer, "mid" is apparently an interesting sector to watch in beverages these days, even if the younger generations don't think highly of the phrase. In our latest piece we dive into the nascent, NA-adjacent low and mid-strength ABV category, which has seen greater awareness globally than it has in the U.S., but is showing signs of activity across several fronts as new players like Dad Strength and Arlow wines are attempting to help define a new category. We love to see non-alcoholic breweries wherever they may be, but especially when they're also in one of the country's best brewing towns. And so it is for Eighteen Twenty Brewing Co., located in the thriving beer city of Portland, Maine, home to roughly thirty different breweries. Check out our reviews of two of their brews, an American Pale Ale, and a Stout that's perfect for winter. In a category otherwise dominated by seltzer waters, Fable Libations' Benjamin Kennedy and his wife Kristen set out in 2021 to create a cannabis cocktail brand focused around the drinking experience. In our latest podcast conversation, we sit down with Ben to find out how they came up with each of the three unique cocktails in their current portfolio, the science behind the combination of flavors, and lastly, what critical lessons he and his team have learned along the way. The market for THC drinks is exploding, and in the only pocket of the country without legalized recreational cannabis, it's of little surprise the Southeast represents a huge market for these beverages derived from hemp. In the last couple of years, numerous entrepreneurs and business owners across the region have jumped into the game with their own beverage lines. Today we feature five of them from Scofflaw Beverage Co., Resident Culture Brewing Company, Snapdragon Hemp, Easy Hemp Co., and Nine Dot (created by Coastal Green Wellness). These alcohol-alternatives with refreshing fruit flavors and little to no calories are ones to watch. Hurricane Helene struck the community in and around Asheville, North Carolina in late September as a generational storm. The mountain community has begun the hard work of recovery, which by all measures will be a years-long effort. Like many of their artist neighbors in the River Arts District, the city's non-alcoholic bottle shop Nolo was not spared. In our latest U.S. of NA podcast episode, we sit down with owners Jen Phillips and Jason Phillips, who had only recently acquired the Southeast's very first NA bottle shop, initially founded in 2021. We discuss what the past month or so has looked like for them, the surrounding community, and where they go from here. While the storm dealt them a significant blow, they are determined to continue serving the sober and mindful drinking community of WNC, as well as the many tourists who visit the area annually. The downtown area was largely spared, and has already begun to re-open its doors. Listen to the episode at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts, or find the link in the comments below. Ways to help both Nolo and the broader Asheville community can be found in the show notes. #nonalcoholicdrinks #asheville #828isgreat #hurricanehelene #moderationnation

The craft non-alcoholic sector continues to show signs of maturity, both in terms of investments being made, but also in money being spent to stand up new brands, or sponsorships in one of the major North American sports leagues. While Athletic Brewing Co. has typically been the first pure-play in these areas, other craft brands are stepping up as well. It got us thinking about the state of investment in the non-alcoholic sector, focusing on three very recent October announcements in NA beer - the launch of BERO Brewing by Hollywood A-lister, Tom Holland; Best Day Brewing's 2024 investment haul news; and Hedlum Brewing's official sponsorship with the NHL's New Jersey Devils. With the typically-busy Dry January period still a couple of months away, we can likely expect there's more where this came from. What happens when two sustainability stalwarts like Patagonia and Deschutes Brewery combine efforts? The first USDA-certified, organic non-alcoholic beer, of course! One of the more exciting NA beer launches of the year, the Kernza Golden NA, along with its full-alcohol counterpart, the Kernza Lager, is made from (and named for) the perennial grain that improves soil health. No different than in any other industry, promoting sustainable methods in beer making is really important, and kudos to both of these socially-responsible companies for taking a lead position (and yes, the beer is really good, too!).
