Future Economy Forum, with partner organizations NOW Partners Foundation, SEKEM Group and Natural Capitalism Solutions convened a dynamic session at COP16 entitled "Regenerative Agriculture and the Private Sector." The event brought together experts and stakeholders to explore the transformative potential of regenerative agriculture in addressing climate change, food insecurity, and environmental degradation. Fair Compensation for Ecosystem Services and Improved Food Security Merijn Dols of NOW Partners Foundation set the stage by emphasizing the crucial role of farmers in the transition to regenerative agriculture. Dols highlighted the need to counter the narrative of the agro-industrial complex and showcase the viability of regenerative agriculture in feeding the world and improving farmer livelihoods. Regenerative Agriculture: A Solution to the Polycrisis Hunter Lovins of Natural Capitalism Solutions and NOW underscored the multifaceted benefits of regenerative agriculture. "Agriculture done right is half the solution, a huge part of combating desertification," Lovins explained. "It increases biodiversity. We need to offset 4 gigatons of net human emissions. Regenerative agriculture has the potential of 20 tons – 10 tons from organic vegetable production and 10 tons from holistic planned grazing." Community-Based Action and Knowledge Sharing Jeff Kahuho, a program officer at PELUM Kenya Association, shared insights from his organization's work in scaling community-based regenerative agriculture. "Healthy foods and organic products, the demand is increasing, also in the rural areas," Kahuho observed. He highlighted the issue of food loss and waste, stating that "30-40% of food is being lost. We are wasting time and resources, wasting the value of food." Kahuho advocated for a systemic shift that goes beyond the farm to encompass the entire food infrastructure. SEKEM: A Model for Sustainable Development Ahmed Elshazly of SEKEM Group showcased the organization's 47-year history of promoting biodynamic and regenerative agriculture in Egypt. "Business can be a force for good," el Shazly stated, highlighting SEKEM's role in advocating for the Economy of Love (EoL) certification standard and Egypt's first voluntary carbon market platform.

Future Economy Forum in the Blue Zone at COP16Riyadh leading the session "Regenerative Agriculture and Nature-based, Science-backed Innovation: Empowering Farmers as Stewards." Covered for the International Institute for Sustainable Development by @Delia Paul. Side event co-hosted with NOW Partners Foundation, EoL (Economy of Love ) Global, Natural Capitalism Solutions, and SEKEM Group. ➡️ Speakers: Walter Link, President and Founder of NOW, Co-Founder of Economy of Love Global (moderator) Professor Hunter Lovins, President and Founder of Natural Capitalism Solutions , Author of 19 books, Professor at Fordham University Merijn Dols@, Co-Founder of the Future Economy Forum, former Head of Global Innovation and Circularity at Danone Professor Ahmed Elshazly, CEO of Heliopolis University , SEKEM Group Laura Santucci, former Chief of Staff UN World Food Programme WFP and President Obama's White House political operations. ➡️ Key Insights: “Regenerative agriculture combines traditional and new practices to create benefits for people and nature, resulting in increased yields, more nutritious produce, higher household incomes, and increased biodiversity. Speakers and participants at this event cited examples from India and Egypt to illustrate the benefits to farmers: first, from applying regenerative principles; and second, from sale of carbon credits from soil carbon sequestration.” Walter Link: “Desertification occurs not only over large land areas, but also on parts of farmland that are no longer productive, because of the over-use of chemicals. This can be reversed using combinations of traditional methods with new innovations” Hunter Lovins: “Peer-reviewed scientific research shows livestock grazing increases mycorrhizal fungi and promotes soil carbon—a process that is “driving climate change back at a profit”—whereas chemical-based agriculture poisons the fungi and leads to decline in the nutritional value of crops.“ Laura Santucci: “Change happens, not only because of data and evidence, but because science and storytelling together can win over the hearts and minds of policymakers.“ ➡️ Read the full piece: https://lnkd.in/gwC_tEnS Photo by IISD/ENB | Angeles Estrada Vigil
