BSSS aims to advance soil science and promote a better understanding of soil, nationally and internationally.
About us
The British Society of Soil Science (BSSS), founded in 1947, is an established international membership organisation committed to the study of soil in its widest aspects. The Society covers soil science in its applications to, agriculture, horticulture and forestry and other branches of science and technology that impinge on the soil. The Society acts as a forum for the exchange of ideas and provides a framework for representing the views of soil scientists to other organisations and decision making bodies. Soil is a very precious resource that has a range of functions. These include support for plants, ecosystem biodiversity, and growing medium for crops. Soils interact with the wider environment, acting as a store and filter for water. Soils support many human activities, and preserve evidence of our cultural heritage. The Society promotes research by organising several conferences each year and by the publication of its two scientific journals, the European Journal of Soil Science, and Soil Use and Management. It promotes education through a number of initiatives aimed at schools, colleges and universities. The Society has a regular and varied programme of scientific conferences on a wide range of soil-related issues.

Earlier in November, BSSS President, Jacqueline Hannam, and Executive Director, Andrew Morris, travelled to Baku for the 29th Conference of the Parties. This was the fourth year BSSS has attended the COP climate summit under our official non-governmental organisation (NGO) observer status. BSSS were delighted to contribute to the discussions through our own Side Event on ‘Invest in Soil Health – fostering the future of climate change mitigation and adaptation'. CPL/Puragen Activated Carbons at the BSSS Conference We are delighted to have David Reay from CPL/Puragen at our Annual Conference in Cardiff in December who will be delivering a session on "#PFAS ‘Forever Chemicals’ – Search, Capture & Destroy." This session will take place on Wednesday 4 December from 12:15-12:45pm in the Parallel Room. https://lnkd.in/enZWtQaE Session Synopsis: PFAS (per-and poly fluoroalkyl substances) is a chemical family consisting of at least 15,000 individual compounds. They are sometimes referred to as ‘forever’ chemicals because of their persistence in the environment. These compounds, which are now known to pose serious health risks for humans and animals, have been widely used in industry since the 1950s, for products including non-stick cookware, firefighting foams, food packaging and fabric coatings. This session will outlie the use of granular activated carbon (GAC) for the removal of PFAS from air, soil and water, together with the use of advanced and award-winning thermal reactivation for the safe destruction of the PFAS contaminants and the sustainable recycling of the GAC. Learn More About PFAS At The BSSS Conference We are pleased to be welcoming David Reay, Head of Strategic Partnerships at CPL/Puragen, to speak about PFAS in one of the sessions at our Annual Conference next month. David will be presenting "PFAS ‘Forever Chemicals’ – Search, Capture & Destroy ." CPL/Puragen is a leading international supplier of activated carbon-based purification solutions and has developed innovative technologies to remove PFAS compounds from water and air, followed by an advanced thermal reactivation process that recycles the spent carbon and, most importantly, completely destroys these harmful chemicals. ***CONFERENCE HEADLINE SPONSOR: ELEMENTAR*** We are delighted to announce that Elementar are one of the headline sponsors for our 2024 Annual Conference. #Elementar is one of the leading manufacturers in high-performance analysis of organic and inorganic elements. We incorporate more than 125 years of experience in the development and manufacturing of high-class analytical instrumentation. Today, our product portfolio includes instruments for CHNOS elemental analysis, stable isotope analysis (IRMS), TOC analysis, protein analysis according to Dumas, and optical emission spectrometry (OES). The BSSS Conference is taking place in December at Glamorgan Cricket Club in Cardiff. The overall conference theme is Sustainable Soils for People and Planet. The packed multi-disciplinary event spanning the built, natural environment and agricultural sectors, will provide delegates with a fantastic opportunity to see the latest research and developments within soil science. https://lnkd.in/enZWtQaE Soils are the largest terrestrial carbon sinks. Their organic matter determines how well they can sequester carbon; together with forests and oceans, they are among the most important global sinks of CO2. The carbon content of soil not only provides information about its impact on the environment but also has a significant influence on its fertility. Check out the UK's first talking soil bench at the BSSS Conference Dr Dan Evans, BSSS Member and Lecturer in Soil Science at Cranfield University, is excited to launch the UK’s first soils focused ‘Talking Benches’. Talking Benches are traditional outdoor benches with an inbuilt speaker system that can play a sequence of audio tracks and are often installed at sites of public interest or along nature trails to convey information about the local area. In this case, users will be able to go on an intriguing journey to listen and learn about the fascinating soils beneath their feet. Over the past few months, two Talking Benches have been installed on the Cranfield University campus, and we are delighted that one of them will be making an appearance at this year’s Annual Conference. Look out for it on the lawn located just outside of the Pavilion building at Glamorgan Cricket Club . After the conference, plans are also afoot for the bench to be temporarily installed in Cardiff’s Bute Park, providing an opportunity for the public to become engaged with soils. The BSSS Conference is sponsored by the European Journal of Soil Science and Elementar - we are pleased to be working in partnership with them and thank them for their support.
