Launched in 2021, The Nigeria National Action Plan on Youth, Peace and Security (NNAPYPS) emerged from a grassroots youth and civil society movement under challenging conditions, a landmark achievement for youth advocacy in peacebuilding. 🕊️✊🏿 Responding to UN Security Council Resolution 2250, youth in Nigeria successfully campaigned for the government to adopt NNAPYPS. The policy focuses on five pillars – participation, protection, prevention, partnership, and reintegration – to address youth unemployment, violence, and social exclusion, and to empower youth as peacebuilders. The policy transforms perceptions of Nigeria’s youth – 60% of the population – from instigators of violence to contributors for peace. The Plan was selected by our jury as the 2024 World Future Policy Award "Vision Award" recognising youth and civil society’s outstanding role in its creation, alongside collaborative government efforts to begin realising its transformative potential. 🌍 World Soil Day 2024: The Critical Need to Protect Our Soils Soil is the foundation of life—supporting food, biodiversity, and livelihoods. Yet, 75% of global land is degraded, impacting 3.2 billion people and causing $40 trillion in lost ecosystem services each year. In Nepal, erosion, deforestation, and agrochemical pollution have severely degraded soils, threatening agricultural productivity. However, the National Agroecology Roadmap, supported by LI-BIRD, the World Future Council, and IFOAM – Organics International, is leading a transformative shift. Key highlights: • Agroecological practices like crop rotation, organic farming, and agroforestry can reduce soil erosion by up to 50%. • Policies emphasizing soil health, capacity building, and organic inputs are at the heart of Nepal’s roadmap. • The roadmap aligns with global goals, including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and Life on Land (SDG 15). 🌱 The Himalayan Agroecology Initiative works across Nepal, India, and Bhutan, empowering farmers to transition to sustainable food systems. This #WorldSoilDay, let’s commit to treating soils as the precious resource they are—not as dirt. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ep9tXv8a #FutureGenerations #SoilHealth #Agroecology #Sustainability #WorldSoilDay2024 IFOAM - Organics International Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT CGIAR LI-BIRD UNDP Tarayana Foundation Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Ingrid Fritsche
