To the members and friends who have supported F20 throughout 2024, thank you! 👏 We are, as always, endlessly impressed by the unflagging work towards climate action we see from all our members. In such a turbulent global context, it’s never been clearer that the most impactful way to reach a common goal is to work hand-in-hand with one another. Which, when we have such engaged and motivated members, is light work. 🫂 F20 Secretary General, Katrin Harvey, knows that collaboration is the reason F20 can thrive: “𝐅𝟐𝟎’𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲. 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬.” 📜 We invite you to read our 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝑬𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒀𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝑴𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒂𝒈𝒆 in full, but here are some selected highlights: • 2024 has been a year of growth. We’re thrilled to have Raisa Cole (Democracy Works Foundation) leading the F20 Steering Group in her role as Chair, making up the South African representation in our TROIKA. Cole is joined by Maria Netto, the Executive Director of the Institute for Climate and Society, who enthusiastically joined the team as Brazilian Co-Chair after the previous Chair, Alice de Moraes Amorim Vogas, moved onto a new and exciting opportunity as Head of #COP30 Unit at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Brazil. • Happily, our F20 member base has also expanded over the course of the year, with new foundations joining the ranks from Niger, Brazil, the US and Canada. We signed Memorandums of Understanding with Comuá Network and Independent Philanthropy Association of South Africa, joined WINGS as an official member and are in talks with several other partners to join us in the next few months. • There's also a sneak peek at our save-the-date for the 2025 Climate Solutions Forum. We'll be sharing more about this in the new year 👀 Moving ahead into 2025, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the other big questions that urgently need to be solved, like an actionable global partnership for climate adaptation or clear pathways for industrial decarbonisation. Wishing you a healthy and safe end-of-year break. We’re looking forward to working with you in 2025. G20 South Africa #G7 #COP30 #Philanthropy #ClimateAction #Collaboration

In the wake of COP29 Azerbaijan, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?This week, a European Policy Centre expert panel sought to address this question. F20 Secretary General Katrin Harvey shared her experiences with #COP29 and how it was informed by the concurrent #G20 proceedings in Brazil, as well as by philanthropy and non-state actors. ICYMI the entire conversation, which spanned a wide range of topics from climate finance to nuclear goals and a just transition, can be watched here: https://lnkd.in/eyHStH72

We celebrate the handover of the G20 Presidency from Brazil to South Africa for 2025 🎉 Leading with the theme, 𝘍𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, we congratulate South Africa on their G20 plans to urgently address climate action, mobilise climate finance, and empower civil society. We believe that the contributions of the #G20 Social Forum will play a key role in these plans coming to fruition. It's clearer than ever that ambitious collaboration and long-term multilateralism are essential to shaping our sustainable future. We're enthusiastic to see G20 South Africa lead the way in 2025. In the lead up to the much anticipated start of South Africa's G20 Presidency, Global Solutions Initiative invited civil society and industry experts to hear about South Africa's G20 vision from H.E. Phumelele Stone Sizani, the South African Ambassador to Germany. Among the attendees was Foundations Platform 20 Special Advisor, Stephan Contius, who was impressed by Ambassador Sizani's emphasis on the essential nature of multilateral partnerships within the #G20. While highlighting the Presidency's focus on '𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭', what was made clearest is that working together towards climate action is an obligation, rather than simply an option. We're looking forward to seeing how South Africa supports and encourages this approach throughout 2025. #G20Presidency G20 South Africa #G20Brazil #Collaboration #ClimateAction

🎉 In case you missed it, here's some incredibly positive news from the Trottier Family Foundation, one of F20's newest members. 🎉 💸 The Foundation's pledge of $150M towards climate philanthropy is incredibly heartening to see, particularly in the wake of COP29 Azerbaijan's lukewarm outcomes. 👏 It's important to note that although this pledge is the single largest pledge towards climate change in Canadian history, there is still a long way to go to ensure that climate philanthropy grows significantly across the world. This is an incredibly beneficial step towards global climate action, and we're delighted to see our members on the forefront of change.
Sharing the big news! Nine wealthy Canadian families and foundations have made Canada's largest-ever philanthropic commitment to climate action, pledging $405-million over the next decade to accelerate the shift to a low-carbon economy. Proud to share that Trottier Family Foundation last night announced its $150M pledge towards climate philanthropy. This is the single largest 🇨🇦pledge towards climate change in Canadian history. We have already disbursed some of these funds and will continue to do so until the end of 2030. Our commitment is a partial spend-down of the Foundation’s endowment. White TFF will remain in operation over the long term, a few years ago our board (Claire Trottier Sylvie Trottier Lorne Trottier Howard Trottier Louise Rousselle Trottier) felt that the urgency of the climate crisis required immediate catalytic capital. We cannot afford to wait any longer and the next few years are crucial for mitigating climate change. We know that solutions exist in decarbonizing our economy and we are playing our part in helping Canada get there. While $405M may seem significant, it's important to recall that climate philanthropy in Canada is currently only 0.9% of total philanthropic giving. We need other high-net-worth families and foundations to join us and help address this challenge. Solving the climate crisis in Canada will inevitably better all Canadians. 📆 Earlier this month, F20's Secretary General Katrin Harvey attended a two-day event in Nairobi intended to foster #collaboration and alignment between African and European foundations. ⭐ 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 built on a similar cross-continental exchange held in Paris this May. Along with an incredibly interesting visit to the startup accelerator iHUB Nairobi, the discussions and workshops made it clear that there is a strong interest from African #philanthropy to engage in ongoing and ambitious climate action. 🤝 We're enthusiastic about the potential for future collaboration and open dialogue that this event made possible. With thanks to the list of fantastic partners who made these meetings possible: WINGS, African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA), ERFIP - Empower Families for Innovative Philanthropy, Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association, The Tony Elumelu Foundation, Fondation de France, OECD Development 📸 : WINGS/Erick Forester

📜 With both the #G20 Leaders’ Declaration published and the COP29 Azerbaijan negotiations concluded, we at F20 are embracing this opportunity to take stock of the outcomes and commitments made this year. 👏 As a philanthropic community, we clearly have our work cut out for us. We need to work together to show up with solutions, encourage ambitious leadership and advocate jointly for the implementation of the SDGs as well as the Paris Climate Agreement. ⏰ Considering the scope of the COP29 and G20 outcomes and the urgency required to act, philanthropic organisations, foundations, and civil society organisations must be emboldened to be more active and dynamic in taking action as well as advocating for stronger leadership from governments. The sources of climate finance clearly need to be broader, more determined, and must centre people first, which philanthropy is uniquely placed to make possible.
