Federal Foresight Advocacy Alliance co chairs Kara Cunzeman and Robin Champ shared the benefits of strategic foresight for governance and policy making with young legislators who are part of Future Caucus (formerly Millennial Action Project). We are thrilled that Layla Zaidane and the staff at Future Caucus (formerly Millennial Action Project) as well as the young legislators they work with are seeing the value of (1) futures thinking in an era of uncertainty and change and (2) of taking the longer view so policymaking benefits not only today's generations but those who will come after us. All the reasons we see to create a #USOfficeofStrategicForesight apply at the subnational level as well. Perhaps these young legislators will lead the charge for creating state-level Offices of Strategic Foresight and ensuring that state agencies have foresight capacities embedded within. Representing FFAA, Co-Chair Robin Champ recently spoke on the Federal News Network's Federal Drive with Thomas Temin about the urgent need for #foresight to synergize and strengthen strategic planning across federal agencies. Strategic foresight isn’t about predicting the future—it’s about preparing for and navigating uncertainty. By identifying emerging signals, crafting diverse scenarios, and imagining unconventional possibilities, federal agencies can better manage disruptions and adapt to rapid change. In the interview, Robin shared FFAA’s mission — to advocate for a U.S. Office of Strategic Foresight, ideally housed within the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The recently published article “Understanding Foresight-Policy Interactions: The Role of Institutionalization” explores the challenges of embedding foresight into governance systems, using the German federal government as a case study. It offers practical lessons on strengthening foresight capability, from establishing cross-department foresight units to integrating foresight into senior decision-making.
