The UN #SummitoftheFuture and the Wellbeing of Current and Future Generations present a powerful framing and a once-in-a-generation opportunity that is inspiring hope, energy and agency. The Declaration on Future Generations (DFG), due to be adopted at the Summit, signals widespread recognition that short-term crisis management is insufficient to address today’s challenges. It invites governments and multilateral organisations to instead prioritise long-term thinking in policy and planning. But how do we turn this ambition into concrete action and impact? ✨📘 So today, SOIF is launching the Implementation Handbook for the UN Declaration on Future Generations! 📘✨ There are many innovators around the world who are already making visible changes in governing for the long term. We've drawn on research and interviews with hundreds of changemakers across more than 50 countries to produce an Implementation Handbook, outlining a practical roadmap for national-level champions—policymakers and civil society—to embed intergenerational fairness and long-term governance principles into their national strategies. About us
The School of Internationals Futures (SOIF) is a not-for-profit consultancy. We exist to help you and your organisation navigate uncertainty and make resilient and better decision in an increasingly uncertain and complex world. There has never been a greater need for long-term thinking. In an increasingly uncertain and volatile world, School of International Futures exists to help organisations use foresight to impact decision-making today. We can help you think differently – and confidently – about the future, and to develop the skills and insight you need to impact decision-making today. Foresight is not about predicting the future, but understanding your current and future operating environment. Insights gained from foresight equip organisations to recognise and respond to emerging threats and opportunities by developing enhanced competitiveness, resilience and agility. For foresight to have impact, it needs to be conceived from the outset with the decision-maker, policy-maker, or other client of the work in mind. SOIF’s practical four-stage approach – Scoping, Ordering uncertainty, Implications and Integrating Futures – and learning journey helps us design and teach foresight that can be used to impact decision-making today. A lovely piece of backcasting... which answers the key question: "What tangible difference can the United Nations' #DeclarationOnFutureGenerations make to the world, its people and nature?" Read "A letter from the UN's Special Envoy for Future Generations in 2028" to bring to life this incredible and powerful commitment by 193 countries across the world. Understand how it can help bring different solutions to the table on issues we are currently stuck on. And explore the ways that all sectors across all countries can ACT NOW to IMPLEMENT and contribute to building a #futuregenerationsmovement and coalition in their country that enables politicians, officials and civil society to do effective #longterm governance Klara WYRZYKOWSKA Brenda Ogembo, PhD Javier Enrique Medina Vásquez Dmitry Mariyasin Michelle Gyles-McDonnough Michele Griffin Minh-Thu Pham Suzette Brooks Masters Jake Sherman Aditi Juneja Ana Fernandes Rafaella Galdeano Dr. Noah Raford Piret Tõnurist Aarathi Krishnan Graciela Selaimen Daniel Calarco Ekitela Lokaale Anja Olin Pape Alex Urwin Alexander Bos Andrew Mace Bernard Jenkin George Robertson Laura Kyrke-Smith
The future is now. Four years after the UN Summit of the Future and the adoption of the Declaration on Future Generations, how far have we come? We imagine a 2028 where governments have embedded intergenerational fairness into decision-making, citizen assemblies are shaping policies on energy transitions and long-term thinking is at the heart of governance. A paradigm-shift has happened in policy-making—governments are being bolder, more inclusive and prioritising the interests of future generations. 2024 has been an amazing start on this journey with more countries committing to long-term governance and multilateral decisions reflecting the needs and interests of future generations. 2025 will be a critical year to build on momentum so that we get to the future we want. Last week, we had the amazing opportunity to gather with our diverse and engaged community at the #DubaiFutureForum! SOIF MD Cat Zuzarte Tully and Governance Adviser Sophie Howe led a session mapping out the community. We heard inspiring stories from across programmes, hubs, initiatives and partnerships—including the Next Generation Foresight Practitioners, Young Voices, Long-Term Governance and our work around the Declaration on Future Generations. It was evident how futures and foresight serve as powerful tools for driving change both locally and globally. Passy A. facilitated a networking exercise that brought the community together with some in-person weaving. Here’s a quick look at our wonderful time together 👇 DUBAI FUTURE FOUNDATION Society for International Development #SOIFatDFF #FutureForum2024 #futures #foresight

We are delighted to share key highlights from our session at the Dubai Future Forum – ‘Build your own Future Generations Commissioner: What does implementing the Declaration on Future Generations look like in different regions?’ Together with John V Willshire of Smithery, Sarah Owen of Futures Friends and our very own Sophie Howe, we delivered a workshop on bringing Future Generations Commissioners to life—exploring how to design the right mechanisms to support and hold governments accountable. After months of advocacy around the UN Summit of the Future, it was powerful to hear how different regions envision protecting future generations. Facilitators from Africa, Asia, Europe, LAC, MENA and the Pacific shared rich insights on making this work in their unique contexts. Here are a few key takeaways: ✅ Future-oriented leadership - many regions are beginning to advance leadership that prioritises long-term thinking in decision-making ✅ Citizen participation - momentum is building to involve citizens in conversations about the future ✅ Embedding foresight - sectors and organisations are starting to integrate foresight into planning and strategy While progress is encouraging, stronger collaboration and more network weaving efforts are necessary to further align efforts and strategies across regions. This is where the real work begins! The #PledgeNetwork is our platform for action, bringing together 250+ civil society leaders shaping long-term governance. Team School of International Futures (SOIF) have been working their magic in the G20 in Brazil making sure future generations are featured in the discussions The Final Declaration highlights the relevance of the Future Generations agenda to rethink multilateralism 💫💫: "The challenges the global community faces today can only be addressed through multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow and the strengthening of global governance for both present and future generations. In order to deliver on the promises of the United Nations and other relevant international organizations around the world, we pledge to work for a reinvigorated and strengthened multilateral system, rooted in the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, with renewed institutions and a reformed governance that is more representative, effective, transparent and accountable, reflecting the social, economic and political realities of the 21st century." These are perhaps just words but we are focusing on turning them into the action both in Brazil and in countries across the world! Come and join our networks of change makers if you want to get involved!
