The #AWIDForum2024 has come and gone, but questions about how we immediately resource our movements while dreaming of more abundant futures still reverberate. We left Bangkok with a clear mandate to co-conspire with our allies across the funding ecosystem with urgency, tenacity and collaboration as the magic tools in our collective box. 💰 We want more and better funding! Huge Official Development Assistance cuts are happening in France, where the future conference on Feminist Foreign Policies is expected to take place in 2025. In the Netherlands, civil society organizations are facing historical budget cuts of one billion euros, as previously announced by the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Aid. This is an immense step back for gender equality and women’s and LGBTIQ+ rights. 📈 Plus, to be eligible for any funding, now civil society organizations will have to up the income they generate independently from 25% to 50%, which causes inequalities in the Global South. These inequalities have already deeply impacted feminist and gender equality movements worldwide, as innovative funding mechanisms such as #LeadingFromTheSouth (LFS) may have to end their activities due to these massive budget cuts. 💡 In light of the political and economic uncertainties that affect feminist funding, the Walking the Talk consortium as part of the Feminist Foreign Policy Progressive Voices Collective (FFPPVC) in partnership with FEPS Europe and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung EU, created a brief in which feminist movements and their positive impact on democracy are highlighted. The brief, written by ALOAKINNOU Kpenassou Marie-Thérèse Benedicta, Lucie Daniel, Maria Malomalo, and Marinke van Riet, presents a comprehensive showcase of two innovative funding mechanisms: Fonds de Soutien aux Organisations Féministes (FSOF) and Leading From the South (LFS). 📢 Curious to learn more about innovative feminist funding? Less than 1% of official development assistance (#ODA) for gender equality goes to support women’s rights organisations and movements. Strong local women’s rights organisations are essential for ending gender-based violence. They can drive positive norm change and provide support for victims and survivors. Yet, women’s rights organisations often lack resources to carry out their work.
