The Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) is the think tank of the progressive political family at EU level
About us
FEPS is the European progressive political foundation. Close to the Party of European Socialists (PES) but nevertheless independent, FEPS embodies a new way of thinking on the social democratic, socialist and labour scene in Europe. FEPS establishes an intellectual crossroad between social democracy and the European project, putting fresh thinking at the core of its action. As a platform for ideas , FEPS works in close collaboration with social democratic organisations, and in particular national foundations and think tanks, to tackle the challenges that Europe faces today.

Read the latest FEPS book “The Politics of Polycrisis”, which is being launched at the 10th anniversary of the Oxford Symposium! With Renner Institut and Progressive Britain 📕https://lnkd.in/eYebrqF7 Drawing on insights from key contributors from the EU and the UK, the book “The Politics of Polycrisis” presents new ideas for restoring social democracy, tackling topics including the #GreenTransition, the rise of #PlatformWork, industrial policy, and artificial intelligence. Rising challenges of insecurity and inequality that plagued advanced capitalist countries in recent years —from climate change to the rise of the far right, economic crisis, and the creation of new types of jobs that do not protect workers—have reinstated the need for social democratic parties to strategise for success. Authored by prominent researchers and policy-makers and edited by Patrick Diamond and Ania Skrzypek, this book is a powerful intellectual statement that presents new ideas for restoring social democracy. 🔸 Introduction by Patrick Diamond and Ania Skrzypek 🔸Governing in turbulent times: challenges for the centre-left by Andrew Gamble 🔸The polycrisis diagnosis and its problems by Colm Murphy 🔸Democracy and empowerment by Daphne Halikiopoulou and Tim Vlandas 🔸A new industrial policy for the EU by MEP Matthias Ecke 🔸Tackling Employment Insecurity: a Fair Deal for Platform Workers by Eunice Goes 🔸Artificial intelligence: the role of the state and the progressive narrative by Florian Ranft, Sebastian Pieper and Jonah Schwope 🔸The path towards a just green transition by Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen 🔸Managing technological transformation – from the perspective of a European lawmaker by Miapetra Kumpula-Natri 🔸To take that one step forward by MEP Andreas Schieder and Ania Skrzypek 🔸A new global deal to help developing countries thrive: rethinking development aid from a progressive perspective by MEP Hana Jalloul Read the new book: 📕 https://lnkd.in/eYebrqF7 To find a path back to power, social democrats must combine a forward-looking agenda for inclusive prosperity with protecting the pillars of security that give meaning to our lives in an era of unprecedented instability and upheaval. 🔟Conceived amidst ideological challenges and electoral setbacks for the centre-left, the Oxford Symposium has become a vital platform for academics, politicians, and thought leaders for a decade. The Symposium features cutting-edge analysis and addresses critical issues like the rise of the radical right, polycrises, and strategies for progressive resurgence in the face of digital, environmental, and demographic transitions. 🇪🇺 How did political parties target young voters on social media during the #EUElections2024? The new policy study "From posts to polls" was launched at FEPSHQ! Read the study: 🔗https://lnkd.in/eEtruVtN Known as the year of super-elections, 2024 has emphasised the drastic change in political communications. The results of the #EUElections2024 emphasise how social media has emerged as a primary source of political information for young people—an opportunity that the far right has effectively exploited. The new policy study “From posts to polls” investigates strategies to democratically engage young voters amidst the emergence of social media as a primary source of political information for young people and the far right's effective use of these platforms. The study focuses on social media strategies of political parties targeting young voters ahead of the # #EUElections2024, focusing on Facebook and Instagram activity in Germany, Sweden, Hungary, & Poland.🇩🇪🇸🇪🇭🇺🇵🇱 Key findings: ❗Turnout for #EUElections2024 was low at 36%,with a 6% drop from 2019. ❗The low turnout was due to a lack of interest in politics rather than distrust or cynicism towards the political system. 🇪🇺 The EU is at a crossroads in its #DigitalTransformation and must act urgently towards greater technological sovereignty. Read the new policy study "Time to build a European digital ecosystem" 📕 https://lnkd.in/gmqyUqC3 In 2024, the EU has proven itself to be a pioneer in legislating digital policy and AI, with trademark laws including the #AIAct, the Digital Services Act (#DSA), and the Digital Markets Act. Yet, with growing geopolitical tensions and reliance on foreign tech giants, the new European Commission must ensure that digital gatekeepers like Google and Meta comply with existing legislation and enforce them when needed. The new policy study 'Time to build a European digital ecosystem' explores the crucial steps in how the EU can reduce its digital dependencies and create a resilient, autonomous, and socially inclusive digital framework. The study emphasises the importance of enforcing existing digital regulations and creating a European Digital Industrial Policy (#EDIP) to drive innovation and secure European values. It also provides critical recommendations for the new Commission, which focuses on creating a unified digital industrial strategy, including developing a ‘#EuroStack’, a European technology framework encompassing hardware, infrastructure, AI, data, and governance. Most importantly, achieving digital sovereignty requires a strategic overhaul. Legislative measures must be paired with capacity building to advance a digital future that reflects European values of fairness, sustainability, and innovation.
