In 2019, a bold experiment began in the Scottish Highlands near Loch Ness. On a 100-acre stretch of former conifer forest, the Natural Capital Laboratory (NCL) set out to rewild the land and uncover how restoring nature could address climate change and biodiversity loss. The vision started with landowners Emilia Leese Ⓥ🌱 and Roger Leese and quickly grew into a collaboration with AECOM, Lifescape Project, and the University of Cumbria. Together, they turned Birchfield into a “living lab” for testing innovative rewilding techniques. Over five years, the NCL has achieved remarkable milestones. Wood ants were reintroduced to the site and nine species were prioritized for rewilding. Cutting-edge tools like Air eDNA and AI-driven analysis have transformed how we monitor ecosystems. The team even developed the first framework for measuring social benefits like well-being and community engagement alongside natural capital. Perhaps most striking is how the project shares its story. Instead of traditional spreadsheets, the NCL created an interactive digital platform, allowing anyone to explore the data, from biodiversity changes to carbon sequestration. As this phase of the NCL concludes, its impact is clear: even small-scale rewilding can deliver big lessons, inspiring others to take action for nature. We’re proud to announce that our joint venture with Jacobs has been selected by Metro Vancouver to provide preliminary engineering services for the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade. Built in 1963, the plant serves approximately 750,000 residents and processes about 200 billion liters of wastewater annually. The project seeks to upgrade the existing facility to meet public health and environmental standards in the growing region. “Aligned with global trends toward investment in sustainable and resilient infrastructure and our own Sustainable Legacies strategy, our team is excited to apply our expertise in advanced water treatment technologies to the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, ensuring it meets the highest environmental standards and supports regional sustainability,” said Beverley Stinson, chief executive of our global Water business. Phil Wayles began his career journey as a graduate civil engineer with one of our legacy companies. Now with more than 38 years of experience at AECOM, he serves as a technical director for our Europe and India region, leading major highway and infrastructure planning projects in the UK, Republic of Guinea, Poland and beyond. As project director with National Highways, Phil has worked on countless major highway projects in the UK. One of his favorite projects has been the A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet, currently the biggest road project in the country. Once complete, the highway will reduce congestion in local roads and villages, improve travel time and reduce accidents — while also providing a safer route for pedestrians and cyclists. Jessika Schoplick started her career as a project manager for natural resources-related planning at military sites in Germany. Now with more than 24 years of experience, she is a program manager for our National Governments business in Europe, leading our work-winning efforts and expanding our service offerings for U.S. Federal clients. One of the most memorable and challenging projects Jessika has worked on was the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Kenya, which includes laboratories and research departments spanning from a malaria diagnostics center, an entomology/vector biology unit, an HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment facility, and more. Based in Germany, she worked closely with our local architects and engineers who performed surveys on-site and our U.S. based digital solutions team who developed custom software — combining local knowledge with our global expertise to successfully deliver this crucial biomedical research facility. Barry Wall is a chartered electrical engineer with over 18 years of experience in the design and implementation of large-scale energy infrastructure projects. Today, he works as a technical director based in Ireland, leading our teams of experts from Dublin, Cork and the United Kingdom to deliver major energy projects across the region. One of the highlights of his career has been designing a high voltage substation connected to an offshore wind farm project in Ireland. The project started as a small commission, but as challenges arose — such as site contamination, proximity to a river, and a motorway that the cable route would need to pass under — our experts from across regions and business lines were brought in to help deliver solutions. By leveraging our global expertise, Barry and his team delivered a project that will provide up to 800 megawatts of clean, renewable energy to the Irish transmission system.
