It’s #WorldSustainableTransportDay 🥳 Today, more than ever, we are considering the ways we can shape the future of sustainable travel, together. We are committed to supporting the net zero ambitions around the world through our transport services. One aspect of this is the work we do to support sustainable, efficient and resilient rail systems, through helping to decarbonise existing rail assets, such as train stations. From high-speed rail to urban transit systems, our innovative solutions are transforming the way we travel, making it safer, more accessible, and environmentally friendly. We assist clients in assessing and implementing strategies to reduce carbon emissions, ensuring a greener future for all. How can we future-proof port infrastructure and operations? The global economy and thousands of communities along coastlines depend on ports, so they must become more resilient to the risks they face from climate change and other disruptions. “Whatever the local context, in our work with ports, the mantra is to ‘put resilience at the centre of every plan’,” explains Mark Button, Maritime Decarbonisation and Resilience Leader at Arup. Our Ports Resilience Framework for Action provides key players a framework for action to help approach ports resilience in a systemic way. A critical part of our work on Sydney Metro Martin Place Integrated Station Development was underground. Underneath the precinct is a complex network of tunnels – the existing T4 Eastern Suburbs Line, the Sydney Metro tunnels connecting to the new station, a new pedestrian tunnel, and utility tunnels. Our structural, geotechnical and tunnelling engineers found a solution to keep the Eastern Suburbs Line running during construction and used digital modelling to ensure the stability of a 100-year-old heritage building while excavating the pedestrian tunnel underneath. We were lead multidisciplinary engineering consultant for the project, collaborating with Macquarie Group as the developer of the project, Grimshaw Architects, Tzannes, JPW and Lendlease. Our Arup Independent Environmental and Social Consultant (IESC) Team have just completed our 16th E&S Monitoring Visit to the Dar es Salaam to Makutupora Standard Gauge Railway Project. It was a special one for me personally - after working on this project for over half a decade I was finally able to ride the train between Dar and Dodoma. What a ride it was, skimming through the Tanzanian countryside in the country’s first fully electric high speed train! What has been achieved here by all parties, notably TRC and Yapi Merkezi, is nothing short of remarkable. Has it been challenging? Incredibly. Have there been bumps in the road? Absolutely. Nevertheless, the progress and efforts made over the years to align the project with the international standards has been impressive to witness. We are proud to have contributed to the success of this game changing project. Hopefully the work will help to secure a legacy for sustainable railway development in Tanzania for future generations to come. How can residents of the Rasulabad informal settlement in Surat, India, make their homes more resilient to withstand the heat of summer and the monsoon rains? Through our partnership with Roof Over Our Heads (ROOH), we worked with Rasulabad residents to design and create a new roof structure using readily available, low-cost materials. Together, we developed practical ideas and designs that had to be: · Affordable · Adaptable · Accessible · Available · Acceptable The result? A blueprint for practical, low-carbon, and safe homes for Rasulabad, co-created by the residents themselves. Climate change is reshaping our world, bringing new threats to health, safety and wellbeing. From heat stress to novel diseases, and aging infrastructure, the risks are evolving. But with diverse thinking and systemic approaches, we can turn these challenges into opportunities for innovation and resilience. We brought together experts, practitioners, policymakers and academics at a Safety Summit to explore these issues head-on. We’ve captured the most powerful insights in a new resource, which aims to seek problems, rather than solve them, in the hopes that more people and organisations will join us in this complex and emergent space. Explore all seven themes: https://lnkd.in/e3zVBpgj #ClimateChange #Resilience #Safety
