What do you do if you're a venture capitalist seeking to minimize risk through innovation?

Recognize the value that “visionaries” and “idea people” bring to the team. Those individuals are unique and often overlooked in the job interview process.

Invest in women. Their companies generate a higher return on investment per dollar invested than male founded companies and VCs only expect 10% of their 95% investments into white men to make any return. Use math more?

You can diversify in multiple ways. But make sure there's a common theme. For example, based on geography, company stage, or industry, make sure you have a clear thesis. Do not let "diversity" drive your thesis all over the place. Many adopt a spray and pray model and call is diverse, which I don't believe is a good strategy.

Dont be a generalist VC. Have conviction in a theme and stick to your guns no matter the cycle. Spend a lot of time defining your thesis and have 1000% conviction in your take of the future whether others see it or not. If it's web3 for example, the deeper the you can diversify between what may be game changing 2-5 years from now and whats may be game changing 10 years out. Diversify across time horizon of your theme...I've seen it time and time again in web3 and stuff ppl didn't understand like dencentelized GPUs and cloud 5 years ago are crushing it today

It is important to acknowledge that innovation will always carry risk. Having a clear investment thesis and a diversified portfolio could be a way to reduce the risk. Early stage investors will always be taking maximum risk compared to late stage, therefore also the equity stake you buy is for smaller ticket sizes. As your portfolio companies grow and get mature the risk reduces. Another method that early stage VC's can follow is to become a syndicate to share the risk. Though doing a proper due diligence and knowing inside-out of the technology area you are investing in is the key to have a balanced portfolio which carries financially affordable risk.

Have an open mind. As the vast majority of VC investments are failures, it's worth looking for something different - a team doing something new with the know-how and grit to back it up.

Venture capital groups do not seek true innovation. They seek novel ideas that disrupt markets. True innovation like putting a food delivery system on the moon only come from people who lead the pack on wild ideas. "The Crazy One's" as Steve Jobs puts it are way to risky for VC's of most firms. So to really stick to something that is in the lane most VC's cherish is - rather static. I have yet to see a VC tackle the ocean and have the stomach to wait 15 years for a return. Wave powered devices that have failed to make commercialization market goals. VC's are for funds that are going to return within 5 to 10 years. Family funds can make 20 year bets on innovation. OTEC is a prime example of technology that will change the world.

In a way, the premise of this question is an oxymoron. If you aren't planning or anticipating some failures when you are investing in innovation, you aren't really reaching beyond "safe" investments - which then likely leads to a "safe" and thus underperforming portfolio. That said, to avoid the risk contained in a Venture portfolio, it is of course important to invest in areas where you or your partners have some background experience and to diversify within that sector in terms of types of innovations you fund.

You can’t minimise risk. Risk is like energy. It’s always there, just in different forms. All you can do is transform it into a type of risk that’s more acceptable to you. For example: You want to reduce operational risk so you increase investment in resources, training and delivery. But this increases your financial risk. You want to reduce risk to your brand, so you don’t innovate at scale. This increases your opportunity risk or market risk. And so on.

As a venture capitalist focused on minimizing risk, one strategy is to "get your hands dirty." Dive into the details of your investments. Risk/reward is a ratio. Creating enough time to innovate and evolve is the only consistent mitigation tactic. Make sure risk and reward are symmetrical. The lower the potential reward, the less risk you should take. That's just math. In the VC world time is only created by cash and cash management. "Cash is a proxy for time; Time is a proxy for opportunity". Every innovative project takes longer, costs more, and is harder than expected. Parallel ecosystems may not develop at the rate required to support you. Start with more cash than "needed". Guard it zealously. Your projections are wrong. I would say that getting into VC with a risk-minimising mindset is the wrong approach. You don't have the luxury of being passive, even for a day. You must be able to believe in the founders 24/7. There will be days when the founders lose faith or don't believe in themselves; that's when you, as the VC, need to step in. If you can't spot these moments, you'll definitely have to write off your investment.

While diversifying is essential but having a sound know about of the trends and how to leverage the existence of these connected to multiple industries with innovative merger of ideas can be a game changer. Cross business amalgamation is where they can play well. Also try the strategy of going public if from initial stage about the innovation as that can really help and create a mark and help well in the process.
