Here's how you can navigate the challenges of driving innovation as a venture capital professional.

Identify high-potential startups with thorough due diligence. You want to make sure you conduct comprehensive research to identify startups with strong potential. Evaluate the market need, business model, competitive landscape, and the founding team’s capabilities. Risk is high for disruptive technologies, but also comes with the highest rewards. Look for startups that offer disruptive technologies or business models that can significantly alter their industries. The key is to not follow the crowd but create your own focus and niche. If everyone goes after the same ideas, those ideas and risk become diluted, and lowers rewards for everyone.

Three things matter in early stage venture: team, idea, market. Is the market large enough that you as a VC can make a "venture return" which is 10x-20x or more. Does the team have the DNA to build/launch+execute on the vision and is the idea/product defensible in a way that it can be monetized via an exit (M&A or IPO), not necessarily profitable. In later stage ventures, the returns may be 4x-9x but then the questions are a bit different as "hey, can I make a decent return which is better than the public equity market" and still not be undervalued and get in early before the exit. Typically, this is Series B or later.

Something I didn't see mentioned here was having a thesis, going deep on it, and knowing this area better than others in your space. It helps tremendously with diligence beyond the financials (which anyone can do) and makes you more likely to be effective in your work.

A solid network not only helps with accessing great deal flow, but also increases your added value as an investor to your portfolio companies in the form of access to industry experts and advisors, manufacturers, distributors, marketing, logistics etc. The more value (in addition to the financial side of things) you can add as an investor to your portfolio companies, the higher quality your deal flow will become. A valuable network sets up both the investor and the portfolio companies for long term success.

Além disso, o ideal é sempre construir um portfólio em pelo menos quatro etapas, onde você começa definindo teses, mapeando potenciais parceiros, validando potenciais produtos e lançando novos negócios. Uma prática muito boa é ver o que outros setores estão fazendo em termos de inovação, geralmente a inovação nasce quando pegamos um atributo não atendido em um setor e muito valorizado em outro, criando algo totalmente novo para um público ainda não atendido!

How do we measure whether it is new or innovative? Compared to the past, did it happen? Compared to nowadays, does it exist? Foresee the future, will it impact more? When you are inventing or innovating anything, don't forget to look around your environment, be aware of what is happening, and be mindful of what you can learn more from the current practices. Sometimes, innovation doesn't necessarily need to be a whole new thing, it's always an add-on or improvement to what existed.

Adaptability, continuous learning, and a feedback loop are also crucial. Ethical considerations include responsible investing, diversity and inclusion, and transparency. By focusing on these key areas, VCs can effectively support and capitalize on innovative ventures, driving both financial returns and positive societal impact.
