I will soon start a one-year research project at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp / @research_royalacademyantwerp https://lnkd.in/eYZ7M3qE From September onwards, Mathias MU will be working on ‘The Phygital Continuum’, within the research group Maxlab. This project investigates the influence of digital culture on our experience and perception of reality, exploring the concept of the gamification of the art exhibition. His focus is on the concept of 'The phygital', an amalgamation of 'physical' and 'digital', where the magic wand serves as an object of research. This mythical symbol, which resembles digital tools, introduces discussions around interaction, perception, and the role of objects as artifacts and active participants. Mathias MU's artistic practice explores the mutual extension of physical and digital realms. He builds environments for his digital artifacts, where a visitor, almost like a character in a game, feels compelled to collect objects and narratives. Often retaining ergonomic features, his digital creations find their way into exhibition spaces, taking on a (temporary) physical shape. Mimicking organic forms, these artifacts are nonetheless rendered through extensive mathematical calculations. Navigating technological advancements, these calculations are implemented into the artistic process, resulting in a practice that evolves, grows, and expands, as do the environments MU builds. Soundtracks, traces, and non-linear timelines assist his exploration of gamification principles. The digital fabrication techniques he uses are closely intertwined with his conceptual interest in the semiotics of contemporary relations, shaping and gathering material.

So after talking about #investment in the #Arts at the Culture Business Conference, a close corollary concern was #impact. How to measure it. How to communicate it. I was fortunate to attend two fabulous sessions presented by Marijke Smallegange on the work she has driven at Rijksmuseum. One insight that really rang out loud and clear is that #ImpactCommunications is a thing and not just a nice to have. And it's probably absent from most communications position descriptions in the Australian #ArtsSector. And what #ImpactCommunications requires is not the same as your average PR story or project blurbette on your funding acquittal. It requires a holistic method of quantitative data (yes, the numbers still matter), qualitative data (yes, free text in surveys is not dead), a deep engagement with your institution's #CulturalDNA (legacy that builds your institutional identity) and future direction. All wrapped up in a damn good story. #ImpactCommunications is all the more important now at a time when the #Arts is having to speak to such a diversity of interests in the funding and philanthropy sphere. ☑️ *READ ABSTRACT BELOW:* An inter-regional cortical tract is one of the most fundamental architectural motifs that integrates neural circuits to orchestrate and generate complex functions of the human brain. To understand the mechanistic significance of inter-regional projections on development of neural circuits, we investigated an in vitro neural tissue model for inter-regional connections, in which two cerebral organoids are connected with a bundle of reciprocally extended axons. The connected organoids produced more complex and intense oscillatory activity than conventional or directly fused cerebral organoids, suggesting the inter-organoid axonal connections enhance and support the complex network activity. In addition, optogenetic stimulation of the inter-organoid axon bundles could entrain the activity of the organoids and induce robust short-term plasticity of the macroscopic circuit. These results demonstrated that the projection axons could serve as a structural hub that boosts functionality of the organoid-circuits. This model could contribute to further investigation on development and functions of macroscopic neuronal circuits in vitro. Titled “Beyond the Global Boom: Private Art Museums in the 21st Century,” the publication identifies 446 institutions specializing in modern and contemporary art founded by private individuals with limited or no public funding. About 80 percent of them were established this century, according to the report. Germany leads the global count, with 60 such institutions, followed by the U.S. (59), and South Korea (50). China established 30 such entities in just nine years, the study says.

The Dutch are 'extremely proud' to see our very own prof.dr.ir. IMCM (Ivonne) Rietjens having a seat on the board of #Pinduoduo, the mother company of #temu. Temu is the Chinese online sales giant who couldn't care less about the well being of its consumers by disrespecting EU safety regulations of the goods they sell at spot prices on their platforms. Let alone questionable labor practices... Now the #EU doesn't seem to do much to stop Temu from these unfair and apparent illegal business practices, at the same time Dutch Professor Rietjens seems to show zero integrity and one should question her ethical morals. Why would such a highly acclaimed professor take a seat on the board of Chinese company promoting questionable business practices? Unbelievable to my point of view. Just google "temu legał"... WATERSTAAT. Landmark Artwork & Augmented Reality. Geert Mul 2023 ​ According to physics, water manifests in three primary states: liquid, solid, and gas. However, Mul raises an inquiry about the cultural states of water, within the context of the Dutch Water Defence Lines (1815) and the water fort Lunet aan de Snel (1845). Mul's work assigns these ‘cultural states of water’ its own hidden map, concealed within the landmark artwork that reflects the landscape utilizing a half-transparant mirror. When a visitor approaches the mirrors, a LED light illuminates a concealed map, creating a triadic image that encompasses the spectator, a map featuring a cultural state of water and the landscape. When applying the WATERSTAAT Augmented Reality app the cultural conditions of water are made visible and experiential, projected onto the surrounding landscape. ​ Mul defines distinct cultural states of water: Water as Culture. Research suggests that viewing original Art evokes 10x the emotion of reproductions—much like meeting someone in real life vs. online. A study led by the Mauritshuis museum in collaboration with Dutch researchers reveals that Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring captivates viewers uniquely, with EEG and fMRI scans showing significantly higher emotional responses to the original painting.  Participants first focused on the Girl’s eyes and mouth, then on the pearl earring, creating a "sustained attentional loop" that held their gaze longer than with other artworks. Brain activity, especially in the precuneus—responsible for attention, memory, and self-reflection—was notably higher when participants viewed the original art compared to reproductions or benchmark works by Rembrandt and van Honthorst. The findings emphasize the powerful impact of viewing original works of art in person. Participants' brain activity, particularly in the precuneus—the region responsible for attention, memories, and self-reflection—was far more engaged when looking at Vermeer's masterpiece compared to reproductions or other benchmark paintings like those by Rembrandt and van Honthorst. This study illustrates how experiencing authentic art, much like meeting someone in person rather than online, creates deeper emotional and cognitive connections. The emotional resonance is akin to the way face-to-face interactions reveal nuances of expression and depth that social media can't capture. Just as meeting someone in real life evokes a richer experience, revealing layers of expression and depth that aren't captured online, viewing original artwork allows for a more profound connection than seeing digital or printed copies. In a world increasingly dominated by digital replicas, the impact of genuine, authentic, unfiltered and more emotional experiences—whether with art or people—stands out as far more profound, meaningful and powerful. In recent years, the market for wearable devices has been rapidly growing, with much of the demand for health management. These devices are equipped with numerous sensors that detect inertial measurements, electrocardiograms, photoplethysmography signals, and more. Utilizing the collected data enables the monitoring and analysis of the user's health status in real time. With the proliferation of wearable devices, research on applications such as human activity recognition, anomaly detection, and disease prediction has advanced by combining these devices with deep learning technology. Analyzing heart rate variability and activity data, for example, enables the early detection of an abnormal health status and prompt, appropriate medical interventions. Much of the current research focuses on short-term predictions, but adopting a long-term perspective is essential for further development of wearable devices and deep learning. Continuously recording user behavior, anomalies, and physical information and collecting and analyzing data over an extended period will enable more accurate disease predictions and lifestyle guidance based on individual habits and physical conditions. Achieving this requires the integration of wearable devices with medical records. A system needs to be created to integrate data collected by wearable devices with medical records such as electronic health records in collaboration with medical facilities like hospitals and clinics. Trust is the most important factor in the art world. Blockchain technology enforces trust without compelling anyone to trust one single individual/institution. Tokenization of art helps enable storage of information on chain by cryptographically signing the artwork, embedding due diligence certificates on smart contracts which keeps the information accessible to all. There are certain emerging unique identification technologies that help map real world physical artwork on chain, however legal rights remain a work in progress. The blockchain art space is relatively new which requires a lot of investor education and we also need an enhanced digital asset regulation / legal framework around consumer protection, fraud prevention, etc.
