Key point of interest today in DfE's annual accounts is the Apprenticeship Programme Budget expenditure for FY23/24 - underspend was just £17m on the £2.5bn programme budget. Good job the DfE budget has been topped up this current year as not much headroom for increasing rates, let alone significant non-apprenticeship flexibilities without additional funds. GCSE students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will soon receive their results, but how does the grading system work in England? GCSEs in England now use a numerical system from 9 to 1, replacing the old A* to E grading. This was introduced in 2014, with full implementation by 2020. The highest grade is 9, while 1 is the lowest with U remaining ungraded. Grade boundaries, set annually by examiners, determine the minimum marks needed for each grade. A 4 is considered a standard pass, while a 5 is a strong pass. Many sixth forms require a minimum number of 5s or 6s for further study. The shift to numerical grades was aimed at making GCSEs more challenging and transparent, with a focus on final exams rather than coursework. Additionally, it allows for clearer differentiation among high-achieving students. But did these changes achieve its goals? WJEC have now released the specification for their new Sustainability in Action qualification. https://lnkd.in/evPG6utS I've read it through and, although I think that the content is what should be taught in schools anyway, for some students it might be important to hold a sustainability qualification specifically. I was particularly interested in the "amplification of content" column in the framework, where WJEC give examples of how to address a learning outcome and the assessment criteria. Pages 48 and 49 address Learning Outcome 8 "Understand the benefits of sustainability at home, in the workplace or in school or college". The WJEC suggestions are far too fluffy in my opinion "removing paper cups from water stations" and I don't think will help learners to understand real climate mitigation actions....so I've put in my own suggestions in the table below. The left hand column is the current WJEC examples and the right hand column is mine. Where there's a blank cell I've agreed with WJEC. Really interested in what you'd add as well/instead. The highlight for me is they are students with special needs. I am excited about their inclusion in food projects. Children in Nigeria with special needs should also be exposed to similar projects that can enable sustainable development through agriculture. Their creative skills should be showcased. They are a part of the creative economy in many terrains. Thank you for sharing HRM - KABIYESI. I can relate with this post. I learnt to farm in secondary school - Federal Government College Odogbolu in the same neighbourhood with Mayflower - founded by Sir Tai Solarin of blessed memory. I heard Mayflower planted what they ate. That was a different level. Babcock University, also in the same neighbourhood is keen on agriculture not just as courses but for feeding and earning incomes. There was a workshop recently on Land Use Change and the Resilience of Farming Systems held on 10th July, 2024 at Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State. Can you imagine a ten year old using a hoe and cutlass for the first time? Now its really funny thinking about it. I was excited initially, then tired, then the blisters and came the tears 😢. Practice made me perfect and I am glad it happened. l can still use a hoe and cutlass effortlessly. I have to find a way to teach my son, thinking about it. Agriculture is still compulsory for those in junior secondary school in Nigeria, sadly many schools do not have the land to farm. In S-TEE School in Festac, we had to make space for farmland to plant vegetables, yam, plantain etc. There are a couple of animals we breed - goats, rabbits, chicken and tortoise. Schools without lands to farm in the cities can plant in bags and buckets or create some space regardless of how little to teach the students farming across different levels, whether compulsory or not. Farming and gardening can be fun but most of all, it can curb hunger and poverty. Subsistence farming should never be out of fashion for countries in Africa. Africa can feed Africa on large scale farming and subsistence farming 🚜
