💥 "The US should not take these international postdocs for granted." #International #postdoctoral #students working in the US who earned their PhDs in other countries earn less and receive less mentoring than do American postdocs educated in the US, says a study published last month in the journal Elsevier. In the study, “New evidence on international postdocs in the US: Less pay, different experiences”, professors Megan MacGarvie and Shulamit Kahn, both of whom teach markets, public policy and law at Questrom School of Business, Boston University, also found that international #postdocs with a #PhD from outside the country were 11% less likely to have paid sick leave than were international postdocs who had a US PhD and almost three percentage points less likely to have employer-provided #healthcare. In its first large scale and representative study of its kind in the US, MacGarvie’s team studied 2,801 #STEM postdocs drawn from 10,993 who in 2017 answered the Early Career Doctoral Survey compiled by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) at the National Science Foundation (NSF), an agency of the US government. 👁 👁 Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/dzAZ-J2N #highered #universities #intled #internationalstudents #migrants #TNE #studyabroad #science #research #academicpublishing

A very nice article published by Sofia Patsali ,Michele Pezzoni and Fabiana Visentin entitled 'Research independence: drivers and impact on PhD students’ careers.' The abstract mentions: Drawing upon data on the entire population of French STEM PhD students, we explore the factors leading PhDs to pursue independent research from their supervisors during the PhD and how independence links to their career outcomes. We find that independence is significantly associated with students’ and supervisors’ characteristics. Moreover, students’ independence predicts the probability of starting an academic career and, conditional on starting an academic career, a higher number of articles published after the PhD period. However, the higher number of articles comes at the cost of receiving fewer citations and having a lower probability of obtaining an academic position outside France. John J. Hopfield and Jeffrey E. Hinton’s recent Nobel Prize in Physics highlights the critical intersection of physics, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence, making it a compelling case study for students interested in pursuing studies abroad in computer science, engineering, or cognitive science. Why This Matters for Students: 1. Innovative Research Opportunities: Universities abroad, particularly in North America and Europe, offer cutting-edge research facilities and programs in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Institutions such as Princeton University and the University of Toronto, where Hopfield and Hinton work, are renowned for their contributions to these fields. Students can engage in innovative research projects and work alongside leading experts. 2. Interdisciplinary Learning: The work of Hopfield and Hinton exemplifies how combining knowledge from different disciplines—such as physics, biology, and computer science—can lead to groundbreaking advancements. Studying abroad encourages an interdisciplinary approach, allowing students to explore various fields and apply concepts from one area to another. 3. Career Opportunities: The demand for expertise in AI and machine learning continues to grow globally. Students can enhance their career prospects in tech-driven industries by studying in environments that foster innovation and creativity. Hinton’s title as the "Godfather of AI" emphasizes the potential impact of such a career path. 4. Networking and Collaboration: Studying abroad provides students access to a diverse network of professionals and fellow students. Engaging with researchers like Hinton and Hopfield, or participating in workshops and conferences, can lead to valuable collaborations and insights that enhance academic and career trajectories. 5. Understanding Global Impact: The recognition of advancements in AI and machine learning through prestigious awards like the Nobel Prize underscores the global significance of these fields. International students can gain a broader perspective on how their studies can contribute to solving real-world problems and advancing technology. Conclusion The achievements of John J. Hopfield and Jeffrey E. Hinton serve as an inspiration for aspiring students. Studying abroad provides access to world-class education and research and positions students at the forefront of technological advancements shaping the future. For those interested in machine learning, cognitive science, or related fields, the opportunity to learn from and engage with leaders in the industry is invaluable. #StudyAbroad #NobelPrize #MachineLearning #ArtificialIntelligence #Innovation #ResearchOpportunities #STEM #GlobalEducation #CognitiveScience #CareerDevelopment #InterdisciplinaryStudies #Networking #FutureLeaders #EducationForAll #TechAdvancements

Dear Network, I am thrilled to announce three Ph.D. positions within the joint SKEMA-KU Leuven program. Details of the documents needed and the procedure for applying to the positions can be found in the following links: https://lnkd.in/g3JxVEic https://lnkd.in/gxMAG6Nf https://lnkd.in/grjNHz4E This presents a unique opportunity for aspiring researchers to embark on a fully funded Ph.D. journey that spans two countries, Belgium and France. Collaborating with leading researchers from both institutions, selected candidates will engage in a transformative academic experience. Details on the program can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eEzKsWVA In addition to a competitive salary, the students will have a yearly stipend for travel. This financial support is intended to facilitate attendance at conferences and workshops, enabling Ph.D. students to showcase their work, establish connections, and contribute to the growth of their research network. One notable aspect of this program is the absence of mandatory teaching commitments. However, there is an optional opportunity for candidates to teach a 30-hour course per year, offering a valuable avenue for gaining teaching experience. This announcement is an invitation to dynamic individuals seeking an international and collaborative Ph.D. experience to apply and contribute to the research within this partnership. Best regards, Bernardo

NIRF rankings are totally flawed. Nowadays, even for postdoctoral positions, professors are restricting students for the sake of NIRF ranking. In a recent advertisement for a postdoctoral position, students who have obtained their Ph.D. from an institute/university whose NIRF ranking is up to 20 are only eligible to apply for this position. Even many IITs/NITs/Central Universities/Research Institutions do not have their NIRF ranking within 20. I do not know which kind of students, professors are searching. This is unbelievable. #nirf #NIRFRankings #PostDoc #PostDoctoral #PhD #Professors #Research
