Data suggests that the UK appears to have emerged from a very well-documented, two-quarter-long recession. It's great to see that the economy grew by 0.6% in the first quarter of this year (Source: ONS data). The UK fell into a recession at the end of last year after shrinking for two quarters in a row (six months). We have certainly noticed an increase in business confidence within the recruitment sector in Q1. Our market data from our Outlook 2024 report also suggests that hiring confidence in recruitment companies is set to return from Q2 this year and the sector is optimistic about better months ahead, following a 'slower' 2023. The Recruitment sector is often considered, or referred to, as a confidence barometer for the UK economy and we have certainly noticed a trend between the economic performance and positive sector happenings since the start of Q2. In today's rapidly evolving fintech landscape, the UK is witnessing a pivotal moment as the sector braces for significant consolidation. With IPO activity at a standstill, successful start-ups are expanding their horizons, while established players work to fend off future competitors. Industry leaders point out that cash-strapped firms are increasingly pressured to consider buyout offers, as venture capital investment remains subdued and public listings become a rare exit strategy. The aftershocks of higher interest rates two years ago have left a lasting impact, causing a temporary dip in funding that is only now beginning to recover. In the first half of 2024, the UK fintech sector saw $7.3bn in investment, a notable increase from $2.5bn during the same period last year, yet still far below the record £23.4bn of 2021. As one major fintech boss put it, "Two years in start-up world is a lifetime." The scarcity of funding has prompted smaller firms to consider mergers, while incumbents with cash reserves are eyeing fintech acquisitions. Over the next 12 months, we can expect an acceleration in M&A activity, as VC funding trends towards 2019 and 2020 levels. In the interim, major fintechs are accepting lower valuations to secure the cash they need, striving to meet investors' growing emphasis on profitability. Q4 predictions 💬 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 Early conversations with a lot of clients have suggested that Q1 2025 is expected to be a boom period in a lot of sectors across financial markets. Hiring will be done in anticipation of that, and competitive packages will be put together for the best people. 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 Companies that have ridden out the tough market and had a couple of successful quarters are beginning to re-invest. Candidates with the capacity to build new desks are in high demand. 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐈𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 It has been a slow year for majority of the search world, and there has been less movement than previous years. Bonuses are likely to be less generous than previous markets and search consultants will flood the market. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲? I'm still not convinced on this one, but it is quite clear that delivery roles are returning, and R2Rs are being mandated on more delivery roles. I still believe that the best firms will have learned from the mistakes of being too delivery focused in the last two years but we will see... UK Growth is coming (slowly) for the masses, however the success in a tough market of Insite Finance since inception has been aided by our focus on M&A, PE and VC environments with a strong number of placements and projects with fast growth scale ups across the UK and US. 1. UK startups raised $5.6B in Q2 2024, up 37% year-on-year, with total funding reaching $9.4B for H1 2024. 2. The UK remains the top country in Europe for VC investment, raising more than France and Germany combined in 2024. 3. AI startups now account for 22% of UK innovation ecosystem value, up from 12% in 2019, with UK AI startups raising $2.1B in 2024 so far. 4. The UK has created 176 unicorns, with five new additions in 2024, and 14 reaching decacorn status. These trends in the UK's innovation landscape have significant implications for finance leadership recruitment. As the startup ecosystem continues to grow and mature, there's an increasing demand for seasoned finance professionals who can navigate the complexities of high-growth environments, particularly in AI and tech-driven sectors. CFOs and finance leaders are now expected to possess not only traditional financial acumen but also a deep understanding of emerging technologies and their business applications. The rise in unicorns and successful exits also points to a need for finance leaders experienced in managing late-stage growth, IPO preparations, and M&A activities.

Certain markets, especially within hedge fund, private equity, and investment banking recruitment, getting offers is still trickier than the average market. So what is the best way to approach the process? - 𝗕𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 In a tighter market, getting your first choice company isn't 100% certain. However if you explore the market thoroughly, you will find other companies that are just as good, if not better. Closing yourself off only hurts you. - 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 Even if you're leaving as the top biller of your company, a lack of prep will stop you getting offers. Many of my peers in the UK private equity market will have felt the vast difference in activity this year compared to 2023. Fortunatley for many of the talented candidates in this space that’s started to provide results. For those who haven’t yet felt the change in pace, although the market is still sending mixed signals the future looks bright. Here are some of my key takeaways that might help paint a clearer picture: Increased activity in large-cap buyouts accounting for over 59% of deals in H1 2024. Fundraising is also on track for a record year, driven by larger funds, although exits are lagging due to market volatility and extended holding periods (Source - Pitchbook) The mid-market saw an 11% decline in deals, with international buyers, particularly from the US, remaining active. It was reported that they expect stablilty to drive more robust deal activity in H2 2024 (Source - KPMG) With challenging debt markets, private equity firms are increasingly underwriting deals with equity, securing financing later in the process (Source - Chambers & Partners). Firms face growing pressure to deliver exits during market uncertainty, driving a focus on operational improvements to maximize returns (Source - RSM UK). In summary, the UK PE market is rebounding, but with caution and with a focus on very strategic plays. Is ED&I in recruitment about to die? There is an article in the FT today about a new actively managed fund, which is being launched by Azoria Partners early next year, that will exclude S&P 500 companies that incorporate ED&I inclusion considerations into their hiring processes. The fund will unveil it's plan at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, according to a report seen by the FT. The event is also being attended by key figures in Trump's blueprint for government known as Project 2025. James Fishback, one of Azoria's founders has said "Americans, whether they voted for president Trump or not, do not want to invest in companies running woke science experiments” However, a McKinsey report last year that found companies in the top quartile of racial diversity were 39 per cent more likely to perform better than those in the bottom quartile.
