From Silicon Valley to Shenzhen: A global tour of 20 R&D hotspots One of the more interesting things I saw when researching this piece was the reality that, despite the growing pull of nationalism in recent years, there is a significant of international collaboration as well — with Tokyo, Shenzhen, and other leading hubs attracting strong levels of foreign investment in R&D. 

Great article on the "grim" outlook of Europe's tech industry. Overregulation and lack of funding is what's leaving Europe behind in pretty much every industry, but especially tech. We need to cut down on red tape, increase funding for start-ups and scale-ups, and work hard to attract and keep top talent. It's hard to believe how behind Europe has fallen on innovation. Sometimes the risks do not outweigh the benefits.

Last Friday, we organised a cosy roundtable, "The Executive Circle: Shaping the Future of Semicon Supply Chain", in #Eindhoven, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 #hightechmanufacturing 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴. The industry and government need to work hand-in-hand. The Global Innovation Index 2024 is out, but… who’s really leading innovation? The Global Innovation Index (GII) for 2024 was released in September, with China positioned at eleventh, right below Denmark. But does this ranking reflect the true scale of global influence and innovation? The GII, structured heavily around per capita metrics, often favors smaller, high-income nations. Yet in reality, would a boardroom in search of a new innovation hub choose Denmark over China? The heart of the matter lies in how we measure impact. The GII is undoubtedly comprehensive, but perhaps it sidesteps some of the most dynamic factors that, arguably, should weigh more heavily—R&D intensity, technological advancements, startup ecosystems, and contributions to global scientific knowledge. When we base innovation rankings on these pillars, the landscape shifts. Here’s a reimagined ranking reflecting these broader dimensions of innovation and influence: 1. U.S. 2. China 3.
