Scope 3 emissions reporting can have benefits beyond carbon reduction, according to industry respondents to DESNZ's call for evidence, helping with: 💠 Reputation 💠 Investor ratings 💠 Supplier relationships 💠 Incentivising resource efficiency & circularity This echoes some of what businesses told me & Heather Plumpton when we looked at how to scale up circular business models back in 2022. Moving from voluntary to mandatory Scope 3 reporting for larger firms could be a game changer for developing circular value chains. From the call for evidence: “One of the benefits of scope 3 reporting is the increased visibility it provides on the emissions embedded in materials and products a company uses throughout its supply chain. Emissions associated with purchased goods and services upstream in a supply chain are often the largest source of a company’s carbon footprint. In this piece I suggest that climate inaction is costly and that this should be better captured/reflected within the UK's Fiscal Framework. Strategic investment which mitigates future climate risks could galvanize the economy while driving new green infrastructure and jobs - all of which would safeguard the future.

In our climate literacy workshops we use the #EnROADS climate simulator to help attendees understand the impacts of our current emissions and therefore heating trajectory. For example using the simulator we examine the impacts on the number of heating days, crop yields, sea level rise, global GDP loss etc. The heating also has a profound impact on the natural world. For example, we can look at what happens to ocean acidification and how the range of species is impacted. This week the team at Climate Interactive added two new impact graphs. 1) Ecosystem shifts from warming: This graph shows the global land area in jeopardy of transforming into a different ecosystem due to the heating. This can have profound impacts on everything that relies on these ecosystems and yes that includes humans. 2) Arid Land Expansion from Warming: This graph shows the global land area at risk of experiencing insufficient moisture conditions. Increased dryness reduces plant cover and changes an area's capacity to support life. Climate Literacy includes a clear understanding of how dramatically our world is set to change if urgent sustained action is not taken and this can all be examined using the simulator. Do you know what is projected for the area you are in? - There is absolutely no time to lose to prepare for impacts we are *already* committed to. - There is also absolutely no time to lose in taking concerted action to prevent this from getting much worse - every 0.1° of global heating avoided makes a *massive* difference to life on earth! #ClimateLiteracy #ClimateCrisis #Leadership

The kickoff will take place over the next three days, and we are thrilled to share some key details about the project and our role in it. 📊 Project Summary Despite advancements in predictive digital systems, many urban areas remain vulnerable to disruptive climate events due to complex environments and data gaps. Minority Report aims to address these challenges by creating a people-centric technology platform that integrates: 🌐 Innovative predictive digital technologies ⚠️ Rigorous models for risk assessment and categorization 🌦️ Advanced weather forecasting and early warning systems 🏙️ BIM, digital twins, monitoring systems, and DSS 🧠 Energy simulations and AI-based behavioral models 🗣️ New approaches from SSH with over 20 co-creation events 🏡 Deep renovation passports with multiple deep retrofit solutions The ultimate goal is to deliver a technology platform that supports a sustainable circular value chain for construction and renovation. By calculating a monetary value of the impacts experienced by the communities, our tool is able to communicate a deeper understanding of the social impact directly with investors. 💡 Easy-to-understand terminology is essential in the CDR landscape to drive effective #climateaction. While reducing emissions should always be prioritized over removing them, not all emissions can be fully eliminated. The term 'residual emissions' is often used to describe emissions that remain – whether at a #netzero target year, from hard-to-abate sectors, or simply any emissions that are left. 🚫 Some emissions however, are 'CDR-optimal'. This means neutralizing them through #carbonremoval is not just a fallback option but the most #sustainable mitigation choice.
