I have heard things about the new APM Pathways to Chartered status (APM ChPP) that suggest some misunderstanding about what one particular Pathway means.  The main headline is that APM PMQ and PMI PMP are now recognised qualifications on the route to Chartered, specifically Pathway 3. What is the misunderstanding? That anyone with APM PMQ can now apply for Chartered status and there is no longer any need for APM PPQ. There is an element of truth in that, but the main part is fundamentally wrong. The correct part is that anyone with PMQ/PMP, or without, can apply for ChPP. That has always been the case. What it does not mean is that everyone with PMQ/PMP is suitable or ready to apply. Far from it. In order to apply you must have relevant experience in delivering one or more complex projects, programmes or portfolios. Looking back at the last 10 PMQ courses that I ran, not one person was suitable to apply for ChPP. PPQ is a developmental qualification on the route to Chartered and prepares people to move into complex projects. Plenty of learners on my recent PPQ courses are not ready for ChPP, they are on the journey to becoming eligible. Once someone has the experience in complex projects then they can consider ChPP.

Hello PMO Directors 👋🏼 - It’s a wrap on Q2 / H1! How's it going? How is your project portfolio doing so far this year? How are your Big Strategic Programmes delivering? How are things looking for the rest of the year? How's your PMO battery looking? 📈🔋❓ ✅ 📉🪫⁉️ ❌ How are you doing on the strategic objectives set at your last appraisal? Not had time to do much about them because you're overwhelmed with the day-to-day? We get it. Running a portfolio PMO is hard work, with endlessly repeating cycles upon endlessly repeating cycles. The "BAU" of projects... There’s weekly status and RAID reporting, monthly reviews of actual costs vs. forecast vs. budget, quarterly (re!)forecasting, and annual financial planning (plus permanent staff appraisals). All of that stuff is important of course, and also urgent (time-sensitive) in the sense that it has to happen on a timetable, with each progressive cycle coming hard on the heels of the cycle before. So you find yourself up to your eyes all the time. Which doesn’t leave a lot of room for the important-but-not-so-urgent stuff. The “should-have” and “could-have” PMO development stuff that leads to maturity improvement, levelling up your PfMO services, and adding more value to the organisation. PMO development stuff like: 💡 Benefits Management and realisation monitoring 💡 Developing a standardised project prioritisation approach 💡 Improving the way the organisation learn lessons from its delivery experience 💡 Benchmarking the organisation’s PM capability and maturity against peer organisations 💡 Tuning up the organisation’s PPM processes 💡 Implementing a PPM tool The sort of PMO development stuff you’ve been “meaning to get round to” for ages but which never quite makes it to the top of the pile. The sort of PMO development stuff you don’t get to because you are so fully occupied with projects breaking Time / Cost / Quality constraints that you never seem to have the bandwidth. So why not outsource that important-but-not-urgent stuff to an external PMO services provider? Agree a statement of work, some timescales and a fixed price, and let them get on with delivering it? The PMP and ACP Exam Tip of the Day: The Feature That Fails to Meet the Business Need A feature that fails to meet the business need is a common theme on the PMP and ACP Exams. The project team's response to the issue is fairly straightforward. 1. The team gathers feedback from the client, discovering that the feature doesn’t meet the business need and why. 2. The team reflects on the reason(s) behind the issue, discusses what went wrong, and identifies potential improvements during the retrospective. 3. After the retrospective, the team refines the backlog, adjusting user stories and acceptance criteria to align better with the business need. 4. The team continues iterating with the refined backlog to ensure the feature meets expectations in future sprints and avoids rejection again. Although the sequential nature of the steps is relatively easy to follow some students still struggle with the concept. They get stumped when asked to identify what the team must do next after they are notified of the rejection. Students that struggle with this concept tend to lose sight of where they are within the flow of ceremonies often bypassing the retrospective and moving directly into sprint planning or they don't fully understand the importance of clarity within user stories and clearly defined acceptance criteria. From my perspective this may result from the student's lack of awareness that the ceremonies flow in a specific sequence as well as failing to grasp the importance of capturing the need within the user story and understanding what defined acceptance criteria looks like. I will initially discuss the interactions of ceremonies: The output from each ceremony serves as a vital information input to the ceremony that succeeds it. The reason for the rejection is critically important to the effectiveness of the retrospective which follows the iteration review. This concept is easy to teach or reteach in the event the student doesn't recall learning it. The following scenario highlights the importance of clearly defining the acceptance criteria. User Story: As a customer I want to be able to add a song to my library so that I can listen to it later. The following defines the acceptance criteria utilizing the Give-When-Then (GWT) method. Acceptance Criteria: Given I am logged on as a customer on the proposed music streaming app. When I click on Add to Library. Then the song is added to the library. And: The "Added to Library" notification appears and then disappears from the screen. And: When I select Library, the song which was added should appear under the recently added tab. When a student takes this level of depth into the exam regarding the importance of clarity within the user story and definition within the acceptance criteria, it is easier to understand how ambiguity within either component can lead to a feature being rejected. #PMPROLEARN #WHISPERMODE #THELAB

PMP Exam Tip of the Day: Team SME's who Lack Leadership Skill There’s no training course that is greater for learning how to communicate and collaborate with team members than the decision to place someone in a position to lead a task and demonstrate that they can communicate and collaborate with their team in a live environment. SME's with a high level of technical knowledge and a low degree of critical interpersonal skills can exist on teams. This is not an unusual situation. With increased skill and knowledge comes the need to ascend to a level where they can share the knowledge and aid in the development of others. You are typically faced with two options to address this team member: 1. Place them in a leadership role on an important task. 2. Assign them to training on the importance of communication and collaboration. Option two is typically more appealing because we intuitively connect training with filling capability gaps. Yet a lack of critical interpersonal skills is not the same as a lack of technical skills which is easily addressed by acquiring the necessary skill through training. Critical interpersonal skills must be assessed within a live working environment. The team member must be placed in a situation where they can execute and develop the communication and collaboration skills through live interaction with the team and close observation by the project manager. They have to learn how to lead team members. There are courses you can send them to but without being in a position to execute the skills they have been taught by project leadership they won't truly understand their gaps. The gaps are revealed through coaching sessions with the project manager. If a need for training does exist, they will better understand how the training can aid in resolving the gap. Without actively participating as a leader in a live working environment, they would have no known gaps to associate future training to. #PMP #PMPROLEARN
