PMP Exam Tip of the Day: Team SME's who Lack Leadership Skill There’s no training course that is greater for learning how to communicate and collaborate with team members than the decision to place someone in a position to lead a task and demonstrate that they can communicate and collaborate with their team in a live environment. SME's with a high level of technical knowledge and a low degree of critical interpersonal skills can exist on teams. This is not an unusual situation. With increased skill and knowledge comes the need to ascend to a level where they can share the knowledge and aid in the development of others. You are typically faced with two options to address this team member: 1. Place them in a leadership role on an important task. 2. Assign them to training on the importance of communication and collaboration. Option two is typically more appealing because we intuitively connect training with filling capability gaps. Yet a lack of critical interpersonal skills is not the same as a lack of technical skills which is easily addressed by acquiring the necessary skill through training. Critical interpersonal skills must be assessed within a live working environment. The team member must be placed in a situation where they can execute and develop the communication and collaboration skills through live interaction with the team and close observation by the project manager. They have to learn how to lead team members. There are courses you can send them to but without being in a position to execute the skills they have been taught by project leadership they won't truly understand their gaps. The gaps are revealed through coaching sessions with the project manager. If a need for training does exist, they will better understand how the training can aid in resolving the gap. Without actively participating as a leader in a live working environment, they would have no known gaps to associate future training to. #PMP #PMPROLEARN

Since many of my LinkedIn connections are people who have attended my PMP classes and are preparing for their PMP Exam, I am committed to delivering something valuable to them regularly. Today, I am sharing a useful blog that I have wanted to publish for a long time. 𝐏𝐌𝐏 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭: https://lnkd.in/gazY5REb When I was preparing for my PMP Exam, I was fortunate to find a topic in Ms. Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep book, and I must give her credit because, in my opinion, she was the first person to introduce the PMP Mindset to the world. Over several years of PM learning and training, I've identified 13 important mindsets we should use to calibrate our reasoning system to ace the PMP Exam and, 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒍, 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒓. 13 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐏𝐌𝐏 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐬: 1. Demonstrate accountability. 6. Be proactive. Avoid being reactive. 7. Don’t choose the option that seems to be the ultimate solution. 8. Never be authoritarian. Always apply a participative leadership style. 9. Avoid blind acceptance and complacency. Prefer tailoring and be adaptive. 10. Do not resist change. 11. Don't look for quick solutions. 12. Understand the question type and solve it accordingly. 13. Follow the PMBOK and not your own experience. I have covered these 13 points in detail with some good examples in this blog. 6. Understanding PMP Exam Assumptions: You Have a Team of Senior, Junior, and Mid-Level Specialists Continuing our series for project managers preparing for PMP certifications, let’s discuss another key assumption: You have a team composed of senior, junior, and mid-level specialists, with a total team size of 100 people. Why This Assumption is Important? In the PMP exam, it is assumed that your project team consists of a mix of experience levels. This affects your approach to mentoring, task assignments, and team dynamics, ensuring that you utilize the strengths of each team member effectively. Example Question A junior team member approaches you, struggling with a complex task that is critical to the project's success. How should you handle this situation to ensure the task is completed efficiently and supports the team’s development? 1. Reassign the task to a senior team member to ensure timely completion. 2. Provide step-by-step instructions to the junior team member on how to complete the task. 3. Pair the junior team member with a senior specialist for guidance and mentoring on the task. 4. Organize a workshop for the team to collectively solve the problem and share knowledge. Correct Answer: 3. Pair the junior team member with a senior specialist for guidance and mentoring on the task. If you are used to a more centralized management style, you might choose option 1, focusing on getting the task done by a more experienced team member. However, in the context of leveraging your team’s diverse skill levels, the correct approach is to use senior specialists to mentor junior team members, fostering skill development and knowledge sharing. Understanding that PMI expects you to manage a team with varied experience levels helps you focus on mentorship and effective utilization of your team’s strengths. This ensures that you are promoting a collaborative environment where all team members can grow and contribute effectively. Stay tuned for our next post, where we’ll explore another critical assumption in the PMP exam context. #PMP #ProjectManagement #PMI #PMPExam #ProjectManager #ProjectManagementProfessional #PMPCertification #TeamDevelopment #Mentorship #Leadership

What I’m Learning About Enhancing Project Management Competency I recently came across an insightful article from PMI that got me thinking about how to improve my Project Management skills. The key takeaway? Effective project management isn’t just about technical expertise; it’s about developing a holistic approach through a mix of structured training and personalized coaching. Here’s what I’ve learned: 1- Align Training with Real Projects: The article emphasizes the importance of choosing training programs that are directly applicable to the projects we manage. By aligning learning with real-world tasks, we can better integrate new skills into our day-to-day work. 2- The Value of Coaching: Coaching can provide the tailored support needed to refine leadership and communication skills. It’s about having someone who can offer personalized feedback and guidance based on the unique challenges we face in our roles. 3- Continuous Improvement is Crucial: The journey doesn’t stop with one course or coaching session. Regular feedback and an iterative approach to learning are essential for keeping skills sharp and staying adaptable in a rapidly changing field. I'm curious to learn if anyone has had a Project Management Coach in the past? #ProjectManagement #Learning #Coaching #ProfessionalDevelopment #PMI Patrese, M. & Granchi, G. (2010). An effective project manager coaching approach: driving the coach to the future. Paper presented at PMI® Global Congress 2010—EMEA, Milan, Italy. Newtown Square, PA: Project Management Institute.
