The story starts with John Peel. You know the guy who became famous for playing the music the industry never wanted you to hear. The music industry decided what you were going to like. John Peel was having none of it. He searched high and low for the best un-played music. His life’s work was to make sure the world got to hear about the creative masterpieces the industry did not want you to hear. It was a search for a truth. After his death the BBC decided to create the John Peel Lecture. Creative leaders from the industry are invited to give a speech on their truth in relation to the industry. I’ve watched them all Iggy Pop and Brian Eno to name a few. It was the Brian Eno lecture and the impending sense that artificial intelligence is going to render my art obsolete, which inspired me to write this book. He said something quite profound, ‘Art is everything you don’t have to do.’ Yet human beings seem to spend an awful lot of time pursuing creativity. The creative thinking in producing art has produced all the wonderful objects and inventions we use today. They were the result of a creative thinker with a penny dropping moment. The paradox is my job as a project manager mainly involves stopping people from doing things they don’t have to do. From their point of view I am constraining their creative freedom. From my point of view I just want them to do the things to achieve the project. Yet great ideas and great progress come from people who find themselves in a set of circumstances where they chose not to conform. Traditional project management practise and organisational design attempts to insulate those involved from sets of circumstances management perceive as not conducive. What if as project managers and sponsors we are inadvertently missing a trick here?

Andy Warhol made a tin of soup look interesting so I am going to do the same with the world of IT Project Management. You will find a few references to 'It is a hard knock life'. So what follows is a philosophical pretentious pastiche of metaphorical kitsch. Time to reject the loonfest ways of working that IT Project Management has become. Your next IT project does not need to be embryonic, statistical fodder for the next Gartner and Standish Report. Just don’t follow rules designed for the change game in another age. Be the maverick artist and coat your IT project work of art with the sheen of certainty. You can give Standish and Gartner writer’s block. I will go first.
The content in the book is geared towards the following themes: thinking differently; what to measure; how to measure; the environment; and guides to a number of different IT projects. Delivering those projects, coupled with measuring what matters most, along with greater mindfulness of the environment in which the project is being delivered, will give you an increased level of distinctive competence and the confidence to deliver any IT project within its acceptability threshold.
