When it comes to building a successful system for Higher Technical Education (HTE), what can England learn from other countries? This new research, commissioned by Gatsby and published today by OECD - OCDE, underlines the importance of a coherent educational vision that builds on existing foundations, develops clarity of purpose for learners and providers, simplifies quality assurance mechanisms, and strengthens employer engagement. The research compared England’s higher technical education (HTE) system to those in Austria, Canada (Ontario), Denmark, France, and Sweden. We’re looking forward to meeting stakeholders in the new year to discuss how the findings from the report can support ongoing development of the HTE system in England. #technicaleducation #highertechnicaleducation #education #skills #educationresearch https://lnkd.in/eVwbEaSa

How can we harness the talent of industry professionals to boost the further education (FE) teaching workforce? While industry professionals possess deep technical expertise, many lack the confidence or skills to transition seamlessly into contributing to teaching. Gatsby's Research Officer Emma Taonga Sayers writes for FE News on this new project with the Department for Education and Edge Hill University which will provide training that equips professionals with practical teaching tools and classroom ready skills, that ensures new Industry Associates can engage with learners from their first day in the job. #FEworkforce #FE #FEteaching #industryassociates #technicaleducation #skills

A pleasure to join the panel and take part in wide ranging discussions about the important role of career guidance for the individual and the economy. Particularly interesting to hear from Alison Carter from IES about the impact of career guidance (through coaching and mentoring) for those in work, based on a study with health professionals. Lots to think about. Following the publication of 'Good Career Guidance: The Next 10 Years' the Gatsby Charitable Foundation continues to be committed to exploring how everyone - young people, parents and adults - have access to the guidance they need. I'm excited to lead the team exploring how to make this a reality.
Yesterday in Parliament, Policy Connect partnered with the Career Development Policy Group (CDPG) to host a roundtable on #CareersGuidance - examining its quality, availability, and role in driving economic and social change. In a wide-ranging discussion that featured analysis from participants on the Government’s plans for careers guidance and potential policy reform, Lord Jim Knight and panellists considered how careers guidance can be funded and delivered effectively to tackle economic inactivity. Thanks to all who attended and our excellent speakers, David Morgan (Career Development Institute), Dr. Alison Carter (Institute for Employment Studies), Dr Elnaz K. (Speakers for Schools), Clare Viney (The Careers Research and Advisory Centre (CRAC) Limited), Professor Tristam Hooley (University of Derby), Katharine Horler (Careers England), Alison Morris (Skills Federation (aka FISSS)), Rebecca Passingham (Unison), Beth J. (Gatsby Charitable Foundation), and Tom Baines (West Yorkshire Combined Authority). A new report published by UCAS and supported by Gatsby examines the circumstances in which people apply for Level 4 and 5 qualifications. As a result of the research, UCAS has committed to building awareness among young people and providers about Level 4 and 5 qualifications, including valuable Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs). The research showed that the majority of applicants who apply for Level 4 and 5 courses also apply for degrees, but when offered both, a third of them choose Level 4 or 5 courses. Ginny Page, Director of Programmes at Gatsby said: “Efforts to increase participation in level 4 and 5 qualifications must be based on an understanding of what learners want from these courses. This valuable research from UCAS challenges the belief that Level 4-5 courses are just a back-up option for young people in the event of failing to meet the entry criteria for an undergraduate degree. “Instead, this research shows that many Level 4-5 applicants are more work orientated and want to study closer to home. While league table position is of much less interest to them than the average HE applicant, they clearly need more information about options such as Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs), and the financial support available to them. “ Download the full report: https://lnkd.in/eDFn5S4v #highereducation #technicaleducation #skills #highertechnicalqualifications #HTQs #HE
