Earlier today, Mr. Raphael Maganga, CEO of TPSF, engaged in a constructive dialogue with Executive Director from the Gatsby Foundation Mr. Justin Highstead together with Country Director, Mr. Samweli Kilua, the aim of the discussion was to enhance the private sector landscape in Tanzania. The Gatsby team acknowledged TPSF's pivotal role in shaping and supporting the growth of this sector, emphasizing its significance for national development. The discussions explored the current state of Tanzania’s private sector, focusing on both its challenges and opportunities. Both organizations examined how these dynamics align with national priorities and strategies, particularly in relation to Vision 2050. A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement to explore potential partnerships between TPSF and Gatsby. The parties expressed a particular interest in collaborating across critical sectors such as textiles, forestry, and agriculture, specifically in cotton production. These areas were identified as vital for driving sustainable economic development and enhancing the competitiveness of Tanzania’s private sector. #gatsbyafrica Raphael Maganga🇹🇿 Kennedy Rwehumbiza Gatsby Africa

Reflections on the Woodlife Industry Study Tour to Sweden Last week, we embarked on an insightful journey to Sweden, delving into cutting-edge sustainable wood industry practices. Our discussions underscored the promise of mass timber construction—a powerful, sustainable alternative to traditional materials like concrete and steel. Mass timber could significantly reduce CO2 emissions and position Africa at the forefront of global decarbonization efforts. If just 20% of sub-Saharan Africa’s housing needs were met with mass timber, it could save over 100 million tonnes of CO2 annually. East Africa stands ready to lead this transformation with its rapidly growing, sustainably certified timber resources and pioneering firms. Don’t miss our special video featuring @Joy Mboya of GoDown Arts Centre, Ambassador Caroline Vicini of the Swedish Embassy in Kenya, and @Jack Steege, Programme Director of Forestry at Gatsby Africa, sharing their insights on the study tour and its impact. The tour has reinforced our commitment to sustainability and innovation. Stay tuned for more updates as we advance our initiatives and collaborations! #SustainableForestry #WoodlifeIndustryTour #MassTimber #GreenBuilding #EastAfricaWoodIndustry #WoodlifeBusiness Joy Mboya Jack Steege GoDown Arts Centre Alexander Crawford Svenska institutet Ardhi Na Mbao NBST Management Arup Henry Musangi, AIA Helge Flärd New Forests Jerome Nuwabaasa UNDP KENYA

🌍 East Africa on the Rise: A learning journey into pioneering sustainable wood construction in Sweden Over the next 35 years, it is estimated that one billion people in Africa will move to the cities. Today, most of the urban construction in the continent’s cities uses imported steel and concrete. Imagine if regionally grown wood products were used instead? This is the challenge that the Woodlife Business initiative is tackling for East Africa, as 30 leaders from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania were invited to Sweden’s forest and wood industry last week. Here are some highlights: 🌱 Sustainable Urbanization: We explored how Sweden utilizes sustainable wood in urban construction, offering a model for East Africa where rapid urbanization demands innovative, eco-friendly building solutions. 🔄 Full Ecosystem Engagement: Our tour included participants from every sector of East Africa's wood construction value chain. By visiting parts of Sweden's wood industry ecosystem, we gained insights into sustainable practices that span from forest management, through architects and manufacturers, to finished construction and policymakers. 🏗️ Innovative Solutions: Witnessing firsthand both the proven and the innovative technologies and processes in Sweden’s wood industry emphasized the potential for adopting similar innovations in East Africa, transforming the way we build our cities. 🤝 Collaboration between Sweden and East Africa: The trip fostered discussions on new partnerships, focusing on technology transfer and sustainable practices that could revolutionize construction practices in East Africa. 🔍 Future Commitments: Inspired by what we learned, participants are now more equipped than ever to advocate for and implement sustainable wood construction solutions, aiming to make a significant impact on our region's development. 🇸🇪 A Great Partnership: I worked with the design and production of the Woodlife Business 2024 learning journey in a wonderful partnership with Svenska institutet, the Swedish Embassy in Kenya, Gatsby Africa, the GoDown Arts Centre in Nairobi, The Eco-innovation Foundation and many others. Thank you to all the visionaries and leaders (see names in comments) involved in this enlightening experience. Together, we’re paving the way for a sustainable construction future in East Africa! 🌿 🇰🇪 🇺🇬 🇹🇿 For more information, see: https://lnkd.in/dHdMUcBz https://lnkd.in/d_DCqEBv #WoodlifeBusiness #WoodlifeSweden #SustainableUrbanization #SustainabilityLeadership
