    Opportunity!!

  • In a bid to enhance promotion of access to information, transparency, accountability, inclusive and sustainable development across Africa, Africa Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC) has embarked on a five-year strategic plan (2025-2030) to continue its mandate. In the past five years, AFIC has been able to garner immense success in its priority areas namely, Right to Information and digital rights, transparency and accountability, inclusion of women and marginalized groups, climate justice and institutional strengthening. In the same light, the AFIC five-year strategic plan (2025-2030) highlights specific outcomes designed to advance its mission of creating sustainable, equitable and inclusive development across Africa. Access to Information is a critical bridge to sustainable development. This will ensure that information is accessible to all particularly marginalized and underrepresented groups. Therefore, it will be one of our focus areas as we enact the strategic plan. Promoting transparency and accountability in both public governance and corporate business operations. This will ensure that public services and private sector operations are transparent, efficient and inclusive. We hope this will enhance citizens’ awareness of their rights and lead to increased demand for transparency and business integrity. This will be achieved through equipping CSOs, media professionals and other stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to utilize public data. The strategic plan will also focus on inclusion of women and marginalized groups by equipping them with knowledge and resources to participate in governance processes and holding authorities accountable. AFIC will also promote access to information on trade and economic opportunities as a lever for equal development. AFIC anticipates witnessing a fundamental change in all its programs while it follows the strategic plan (2025-2030).

Impunity of Crimes Against Journalists Must Stop   UNESCO in partnership with Africa Freedom of information Centre (AFIC) has commemorated the International Day to End Impunity of Crimes against Journalists 2024.   According to UNESCO funded research by AFIC on Gendered Dimensions of Journalists’ Safety in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania women journalists are suffering at the hands of Online Gender based violence while in line of duty.   The research further established that journalists in the region face risks while they work. These include murder, torture, assault arrests, intimidation and confiscation of equipment. It has been proven that even after journalists file cases to the authorities, no one is ever held accountable for their crimes against journalists.   This threatens freedom of the press and expression in a number of ways.   Journalists avoid reporting issues critical of government affecting the public they are supposed to serve.   Journalists especially women journalists drop out of the profession to avoid further public ridicule.   Journalists living in constant fear for their lives.   What needs to be done?   Impunity for crimes committed against journalists has far reaching effects on democracy, human rights, accountability and well-being of society. It undermines press freedom and public access to information. No single person or stakeholder can end impunity for crimes committed against journalists. A multi-stakeholder approach involving governments, civil society, business and journalists is urgently needed in every country to address impunity for crimes committed against journalists.   Development partners need to prioritize support for the development and implementation of respective country United Nations Plan of Action on safety and security of journalists prioritizing the prevention of crimes, protection of journalists and prosecution of perpetrators of crimes against journalists.

  • 📜 "Privacy is a fundamental #humanright, as is the right to know," states Justice Douglas Singiza. A recent case exemplified the delicate balance between these rights when public access to information was denied due to privacy concerns. The judiciary plays a pivotal role in weighing these interests and upholding accountability, crucial elements for a thriving democracy. Let's celebrate the importance of judicial consideration in these matters! #Privacy #Transparency #IDUAI2024.

  • ⚖️ Justice Douglas Singiza highlights the complexity of balancing #humanrights with state security. Courts have a critical role in ensuring that individual liberties are preserved while addressing national security concerns. This balance is paramount as we navigate a rapidly changing landscape. Let’s foster discussions on how to achieve this equilibrium! #RightToKnow #IDUAI2024 #AccessToInformation.
