In a bid to enhance promotion of access to information, transparency, accountability, inclusive and sustainable development across Africa, Africa Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC) has embarked on a five-year strategic plan (2025-2030) to continue its mandate. In the past five years, AFIC has been able to garner immense success in its priority areas namely, Right to Information and digital rights, transparency and accountability, inclusion of women and marginalized groups, climate justice and institutional strengthening. In the same light, the AFIC five-year strategic plan (2025-2030) highlights specific outcomes designed to advance its mission of creating sustainable, equitable and inclusive development across Africa. Access to Information is a critical bridge to sustainable development. This will ensure that information is accessible to all particularly marginalized and underrepresented groups. Therefore, it will be one of our focus areas as we enact the strategic plan. Promoting transparency and accountability in both public governance and corporate business operations. This will ensure that public services and private sector operations are transparent, efficient and inclusive. We hope this will enhance citizens’ awareness of their rights and lead to increased demand for transparency and business integrity. This will be achieved through equipping CSOs, media professionals and other stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to utilize public data. The strategic plan will also focus on inclusion of women and marginalized groups by equipping them with knowledge and resources to participate in governance processes and holding authorities accountable. AFIC will also promote access to information on trade and economic opportunities as a lever for equal development. AFIC anticipates witnessing a fundamental change in all its programs while it follows the strategic plan (2025-2030).

In a world increasingly driven by technology, the digital frontier has become a powerful tool for engagement and change. iLEAD AFRICA convened a one-day policy discourse to explore how Nigerian youth can harness this potential to improve their participation in the nation's governance. And I had the honors of steering the conversation as the event host. The event, held in partnership with the National Institute of Legislative Studies was an opportunity to explore the innovative ways young people can use technology to amplify their voices and hold leaders accountable. Experts discussed the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, emphasizing the need for digital literacy, equitable access, and supportive policies to ensure that all youth can participate meaningfully in the democratic process. The digital landscape continues to evolve, the future of governance in Nigeria rests in the hands of its youth. With events like iLEAD Africa's one-day Youth Policy Discourse, young people are reminded to take urgent action and inspired to embrace technology as a tool in shaping the nation's future. Well-done for the brilliant convening and thanks for the opportunity to be a part of the discourse Yusuff Liadi Abiodun

As the UN Civil Society Conference kicks off today in Nairobi, Kenya, six organisations; Paradigm Initiative, Data Privacy Brasil, Research ICT Africa, Pollicy, Digital Rights Foundation and InternetBolivia.org Foundation under the umbrella of the Global South Alliance have issued a statement emphasing their position on the UN Global Digital Compact (GDC) and Summit of the Future. 📌 The organisations would like the global body to address pressing issues for civil society in digital rights sphere with a focus on several areas including Internet access, Research and Data access. 📌 They are also expressing concern over the global distribution of risks and opportunities offered by existing and emerging technologies. 📌 As much as they welcome the process of a GDC that would contribute towards bridging gaps brought about by inequalities created by technologies, it is their position that the Global South has unique needs and priorities, influenced by unique contexts, dependencies and technology infrastructure. I wish to thank Honerable Ms. Mercy K. Wambua, OGW, the Commission Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Commission on Administrative Justice (Office of the Ombudsman) for insightful remark during the consultation workshop for IATI next Strategic Plan. She highlighted key issues: Transparency and accountability are the cornerstones of sustainable development and are essential in fostering trust among our people, our partners, and the broader global community. Kenya’s commitment to strengthening governance and accountability is unwavering. By ensuring that every shilling of international aid is efficiently utilized, we can build a system that serves our citizens and empowers every development partner to see the impact of their support. Key Trends Shaping the Future of Financial Transparency and Accountability: · Diversification of Aid Sources: The nature and origin of aid are changing dramatically. We now see a broader pool of contributors, including emerging economies, private-sector financing, and regional financial institutions. South-South cooperation and intra-regional funding have grown in prominence, offering new opportunities but also presenting complex challenges in tracking and accountability. To navigate this complexity, we need all information from these diverse sources to be published in IATI. · Evolving International Financial Landscape: Complex funding structures, including blended finance models, social impact investments, and the rise of climate and green bonds, provide innovative ways to address global challenges. As these financial tools evolve, we must be ready to capture and report these flows through IATI, ensuring that every shilling supports Kenya’s priorities and is accounted for effectively. · New Pressures: Emerging geopolitical shifts are influencing donor priorities and shaping multilateral aid negotiations. Increased domestic pressures on aid budgets within traditional donor nations and greater scrutiny on how funds align with global standards and human rights require joint responsibility in demonstrating effective use of funds. · For us to keep the 2030 Agenda and SDGs, as well as our global climate and environmental commitments, on track, we need increased investment and access to finance. However, it’s critical that these investments are transparent and published through IATI to ensure donor accountability at the global level and drive real, measurable outcomes in countries. Kenya reaffirms its commitment to an accountable, transparent, and citizen-centered approach to international cooperation. Through collaboration, technology, and a forward-looking vision, we can shape a more accountable and effective development system by 2030 and beyond. #IATI #2030Agenda
