Almost four years ago, we published the Roadmap for the Integration of Sustainable Energy and Transport in Small Islands. It has become one of APEC's most downloaded reports. As a first component in the design of island sustainable #energy and #transport transition planning, we suggest the drafting of a stakeholder-oriented #SustainableMobilityPlanforIslands (#SMPI) that entails a groundwork phase, strategy development, and the design and implementation of concrete transformative measures. SMPIs rely on the #AvoidShiftImprove (#ASI) framework, a comprehensive strategy enabling a deep transition of mobility to sustainable technologies and practices. #EVs powered by #renewables is a key component of the broader set of ASI measures. As a second component in the design of island sustainable energy and transport transition planning, we suggest the application of the #MultiCriteriaDecisionMaking (#MCDM) approach that allows policymakers to select the most beneficial energy and transport integration scenario for their island based on specific criteria of high relevance to them. Since the APEC roadmap, we have intensified our engagement with islands in the #Pacific and across the #Caribbean. Much like politics, all energy and transport is local. Ready-to-implement island roadmaps need to consider the geographic, resource, political, social, economic and environmental situation of an island. They need to be designed specifically for, and in, each locality. The APEC report provides the rationale for a swift and ambitious transition and presents two tools for the design of location-specific roadmaps. Southeast Asia should tread carefully on their (imported) LNG-to-power rapid expansion plans if their renewables-grid investment is underexplored. On The Straits Times. Rising economies, declining domestic #gas and coal-to-gas switch stories have been sold too many times. But switching from domestic cheap gas to imported #LNG is a different ball game. *Also consider that some SEA countries put price caps on their domestic cheap gas already. Let's recap. US' #coal switch was fairly straightforward with cheap gas priced below $5/MMBTU. Europe temporarily scrambled for LNG after Russian gas shut out but are building up RE and can better afford LNGs. Japan and South Korea have been buying LNG for decades. There will be some room for gas, but shoving too many LNG power into emerging markets warrant deep questions. Now, while RE can be more cost effective in the medium run, investing in renewables+grid is admittedly frontload-heavy in capital investment. Executives and authorities may not have incentive to look that far out, hence robust and transparent planning is needed. Perhaps quite a few of the announced project may never see the light of day. But nevertheless, tread with care as ultimately the hefty LNG cost will be borne by the consumers or government. ADB approves $500 mln loan for Indonesia's energy transition efforts Summary: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $500 million policy-based loan to support Indonesia's energy transition efforts. This loan is part of a broader strategy to help the resource-rich nation, which aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060, reduce its heavy reliance on coal. The program focuses on creating a solid policy and regulatory framework for the clean energy transition, enhancing governance in the energy sector, and ensuring financial sustainability. Indonesia is at a critical point in its energy transition journey, and the ADB loan is designed to support the country's policy development rather than targeting any specific project. The loan will help Indonesia implement its Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) plan, which aims to limit power sector emissions to 290 million metric tons of carbon by 2030. JETP has already pledged $20 billion for this purpose, though the disbursement of funds has been slow. That is a huge portion of the 97.4% of the businesses that constituted the #msmes ecosystem with 1.2 million firms offering employment to #malaysians. One of our main objectives is to promote MSMEs' ESG adoption. Our teams of #sustainability academicians and practitioners are excited about the BCX carbon opportunities to handhold smaller businesses in #justtransition. This step is essential for creating a targeted improvement strategy. Example: The UK National Grid Project, which used a holistic framework to create a future-proof energy supply plan. Plan and Prioritise: Develop a mitigation plan by using advanced modelling to prioritize critical investments. Adaptive planning allows utilities to prepare for various climate scenarios. Example: A multi-hazard climate risk assessment for Tonga, which informed climate adaptation for critical infrastructure. Design Bespoke Solutions: Tailor solutions to address unique challenges, such as protective infrastructure or personnel management systems. Advanced technology like AI-powered grids or digital twins can enable real-time monitoring and decision-making. Example: A digital spine feasibility study to support data sharing for energy decarbonization in the UK. Conclusion: To ensure a dependable energy supply, Southeast Asia’s grids need more than reliability—they must be resilient to climate uncertainties. 📣 NEW: DPPA is permitted by the Vietnamese Government! A government decree issued today, July 03rd, introduces the direct power purchase agreement (DPPA) mechanism, allowing renewable energy producers to trade directly with large electricity consumers. This groundbreaking move enables rooftop solar power projects, wind power, and biomass energy projects to bypass Vietnam Electricity (EVN) entirely. The decree permits direct power trading through two options: private transmission lines or the national grid. Renewable energy producers such as solar, wind, small hydropower, biomass, geothermal, ocean waves, tidal, marine currents, and rooftop solar systems can all participate, provided they hold the necessary electricity operation licenses or are exempt from licensing. Trading via private transmission lines allows renewable energy producers and large consumers to negotiate purchase agreements, with any excess electricity sold back to EVN. Consumers also retain the flexibility to purchase electricity from EVN or other retail providers. Southeast Asia is on track to vastly expand its gas-fired power plant and liquid natural gas import capacity, threatening its green energy transition, a report warned Thursday. The region's existing plans project a doubling of gas-fired power capacity, and an 80 percent increase in LNG import capacity, said Global Energy Monitor (GEM), a US-based NGO. Leading the LNG expansion in the region are Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand, GEM said. But the area already has enough large-scale solar and wind capacity in development to cover nearly two-thirds of the projected increase in energy demand by 2030, GEM added. The report warns that international finance is encouraging gas capacity expansion over renewables, in part by offering countries like Indonesia and Vietnam money to convert plants to LNG. That might make LNG appear more attractive, particularly where existing coal or diesel power plants can be converted. "Most of the in-development gas infrastructure capacity in Southeast Asian countries has not yet entered the construction phase," the report said. China offers the Global Energy Interconnections (GEI) as a planetary project to deliver sustainable development and climate action through large-scale energy transition by interconnecting most of the world’s grids. The GEI is a China-led imaginary of a globally interconnected energy system future, comprising eighteen synchronized regional energy grids to connect most of the world’s energy systems. The GEI is based around three pillars: renewable energy, smart grids, and a transmission technology for long-distance power lines known as ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transmission system. Alongside its export of super-critical coal technologies and renewable energy technologies, particularly solar and wind energy, the GEI has become a key part of China’s “Going Out” policy in the energy domain. According to an unnamed senior Chinese government official quoted in The Financial Times. Xi Jinpeng considers the GEI as something of “a personal priority.” The GEI’s principal characteristic is a web of smart grids, connected by long-distance UHV transmission backbones, to bring remotely-produced renewable energy to energy demand centers. The GEI aims to close energy poverty and insecurity and address rising energy demand challenges – at the same time that it seeks to fulfil a global sustainable energy transition to wane the world from the need to burn fossil fuels for energy. In this regard, the GEI is also a tool for projecting China’s climate action leadership. Countries in Southeast Asia could save up to US$800 billion from their collective decarbonisation costs if they fully collaborate on building a regional power grid, including hydrogen pipelines, according to new research by energy expert and assurance provider DNV. The report, published on Tuesday, found that “unconstrained sharing of resources” between Asean countries through power grid interconnectors and hydrogen networks would lower the cost of decarbonisation by approximately 11 per cent compared to a scenario in which countries tried to fully decarbonise using only their own resources. A fully interconnected grid would require an additional 3.75 million kilometres of additional electrical infrastructure, but reduce the need for up to 600 gigawatts (GW) of installed solar capacity and 1.2 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electrical storage, said DNV. It would also lead to a 13 per cent reduction in the spatial footprint needed for Asean’s energy transition, their research found.
