Last week I attended Project A Knowledge Conference 2024 (#PAKCon2024). It was hard to chose which talks to attend since the agenda was super interesting! I focused mostly on AI topics, here are some of the key messages I took away from them: ✅️ AI landscape in Germany: - AI research, private and public, is growing in Germany and leading worldwide, mostly in robotis development - Policies on data protection / access to government data are roadblocks to further development of AI in Germany - There is still a big gender gap in AI research, dominated by males, under 35 and high earners - AI is not just about gathering data, it needs to focus on solving human needs - Education, Social Dialogue and Medicine are the areas that will benefit the most from AI ✅️ Why companies are failing to implement AI? - They focus on tech but do not focus on the PM / production side, assess if the culture is ready to use AI, have the right talent for such projects - A lot of times, simple available tech can solve a lot of the needs of companies, no need for fancy AIs - A lot of people are using AI, but many do not have a lot of optimism about using it moving forward. Start small, with narrow user cases. Test, test, test. - Educate and change mindsets about using AI. Address the fear of the use of data, replacement of workers and compliance. - There are too many political discussions in companies, focus more on the substance and execution. - Data challenges: 80% of projects fail due to lack of data or too much data (duplication, things that are not needed) ✅️ The future of AI: - Most of the information we consume is digital, but a significant amount is embedded in the physical world - 90% of sensory input is non-verbal for humans. A 4y old has seen 52 times more info than an LLM, because it builds from sensory information. AI won't replace human beings and it will be really hard for AI to develop consciousness - We need to create a new philosophy for AI: make LMMs smarter and address complex challenges - This opens up new horizons: Smaller AIs / less complexity, Optimzed performance and latency, Zero-Shot learning (= incorporate real time learning) These are some of the key take aways. In spring I was facilitating a workshop for the MAXIMIZE incubator for Max Planck startups on the topic of #ResponsibleLeadership called "From Science to Start-up: A Workshop on Responsible Leadership" Being aware of the power of intrinsic motivation, the workshop raised the question: ❓ What does Responsible Leadership mean to you on a personal level? It is a question that I was reflecting upon a lot myself ... I came up with a simple yet clear and, at the same time, somehow vague answer: 💚 "Responsible Leadership means being a good person, with a good heart and a good intention. THE TRUSTED ADVISOR By Maister, Green and Galford This is the new edition of an all-time classic. It is, obviously, more interesting for People in Advisory business. But still, its concepts are useful for most of us in the professional arena. The main idea in the book is that: "Advice giving is almost never an exclusively logical process. Rather, it is almost always an emotional "duet", played between the advice giver and the client. If you can´t learn to recognize, deal with, and respond to client emotions, you will never be an effective advisor" It states the trusted advisor main skills are: - Earning Trust - Building Relationships - Giving Advice Effectively The book gives plenty of insights on each of these skills and how to build them right. I loved the last chapter, number 20: "The Case of Cross Selling". They use their now famous Trust Formula, to illustrate how cross-selling is so difficult and how to best approach it in each case of the Current-New Business Vs Current-New Relationship. DM, if interested in exchanging knowledge on the integration of neuroscience in strategic management, decision-making and leadership. This paper (link to the paper in the first comment) provides an interesting exploration of the limited resources and research available on the: neuroscience perspective of strategic management and decision-making. Due to the complexity of academic language, I used #chatgpt to summarize the the: "Theoretical Background: Decision-Making in the Strategic Management: The Rational to the Quasi-Rational and Emotional" part of the paper, you can read in the following simplified breakdown: 🧠Decision-Making in Strategic Management: ✅ Decision-making is central to strategic management and involves both logical choices and personal judgment. ✅Historically, decision-making was modeled on the idea of rational behavior: decision-makers (or "agents") are logical, make consistent choices, and aim to maximize outcomes with minimal risk. This is tied to the concept of Homo Economicus (introduced in the 19th century), which assumes humans act in purely rational ways. 🧠Bounded Rationality (Simon, 1947): ✅Herbert Simon challenged pure rationality with the idea of bounded rationality: decision-makers are limited by their cognitive abilities and the information they can access. This means decisions are not always perfectly rational. 🧠Intuition and Personal Factors: ✅Researchers like Chandler (1962), Klein (1999), and Eisenhardt (1989) highlighted that personal factors, such as intuition, emotions, and individual experiences, influence decision-making. ✅Intuition can help executives make decisions in uncertain situations, but it complicates efforts to create standardized models. 🧠Heuristics and Biases (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974): ✅People use mental shortcuts (heuristics) to make decisions, which can lead to systematic errors or biases. ✅This insight led to the development of Prospect Theory (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979), explaining why decision-making often deviates from pure rationality. 🧠Quasi-Rational Behavior (Thaler, 2000): ✅Thaler introduced the concept of "quasi-rational" behavior: individuals aim to be rational but are prone to errors in judgment due to biases, emotions, and cognitive limits. ✅In strategic management, such "near-rational" behavior is hard to model mathematically because it’s unpredictable and inconsistent. 🧠The Role of Neuroscience: ✅Advances in neuroscience offer tools to study how emotions, intuition, and biases influence decisions. ✅Neuroscientific insights help explain quasi-rational behavior and could integrate emotion and cognition into strategic management models. 🧠Evolution of Strategic Management Studies: ✅Early models avoided incorporating emotions and subjective factors because they made rigorous modeling difficult. ✅However, newer approaches recognize the importance of personal and emotional influences, blending psychology, biology, and cognitive science to create more comprehensive models.

❓What is better leadership? I recently read an article about an interview with Céline Schillinger, Author of Dare to Un-Lead. Celine criticised performance evaluations suggesting a better approach - an approach that would achieve a better outcome for the time and resources it takes. ❓What if the team got together and evaluated its own performance by asking these questions: ➡️ How do we work together? ➡️ What is the quality of our collective work ➡️ How can we make it better? Most of our work today requires us to work with a team of people. ✅ An effective team is aligned & motivated around a common purpose. ✅ High performance comes from giving those people agency and ownership in pursuit of that purpose. 👉 Imagine the ripple affect on the WHAT we do, and HOW we work together by using these questions as a springboard for reinvention so a team continually delivers value. (versus the current impact on a business, customers & individuals of performance evaluations) Looping back to my original question of what is better leadership?
