There is a need to "supercharge" the accountancy profession amid a lack of accountants in all economies. Finance teams must work on talent management and fully understand the weight and importance of upskilling in the accountancy profession. In Indonesia, Ruby Panjaitan, ACMA, CGMA, director of Finance at PT Media Nusantara Citra Tbk and PT Global Mediacom Tbk, believes rapid technological changes have greatly influenced the accounting profession, including open source systems to process data more efficiently, data digitisation and automation, mobile data storage to access real-time data and analytics from anywhere to make better decisions and artificial intelligence. The Big 4 firms have faced relatively severe regulatory sanctions in a number of countries but in some others, they are relatively unscathed. For example, in Singapore, I can only think of 2 accounting firms getting publicly scrutinised or getting light sanctions for their audits at Hyflux and a Noble sub. Is it because they are better behaved here? More ethical and competent auditors in Singapore perhaps? Or the regulatory oversight is not as robust? Or certain regulatory actions are not publicly disclosed? This has implications for sustainability assurance too. I’m more likely to trust sustainability assurance in markets with more robust oversight of audits because I would expect they would also be more likely to have more robust oversight of those undertaking sustainability assurance. In some markets, the regulatory bodies overseeing audits may also be seen as less independent because their boards may include active or very recently retired accounting firm partners. A study of public accounting oversight bodies and their composition around the world and whether this is related to frequency of sanctions and transparency of sanctions against accounting firms may be quite interesting…
