Elliot Page and Emma Portner Announce Plans to Divorce After 3 Years of Marriage: We 'Remain Close Friends'

"After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer," the pair said in a joint statement

Elliot Page and Emma Portner have split after 3 years of marriage.

"After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer," the pair said in a joint statement Tuesday. "We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends."

The Umbrella Academy star, 33, filed for divorce in a Manhattan court, according to TMZ. The split comes over 3 years after the two announced their surprise marriage just after New Year's in 2018.

Page first began hinting at his relationship with Portner, 26, by posting picture with her on social media during the summer of 2017. A teacher at the Broadway Dance Center, Portner is originally from Ottawa, Ontario, according to her bio on the dance school's website.

Page, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 2007 hit Juno, came out as a transgender man in a heartfelt statement just two months ago.

Portner supported him publicly at the time, writing a loving Instagram caption following Page's statement, where he announced he goes by the pronouns he/they.

"I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot's existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much," Portner wrote alongside Page's statement.

In his statement, Page first introduced his new name before thanking the trans community for inspiring him to come out.

"Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot," he wrote. "I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life."

Page wrote he was feeling "overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey."

"I can't begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self. I've been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community," he said. "Thank you for your courage, your generosity and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place. I will offer whatever support I can and continue to strive for a more loving and equal society."
