PEOPLE has confirmed that Pitt is under investigation by the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services for allegedly getting “verbally abusive” and “physical” with one of his children while on the couple’s private plane. The case has now also been referred to the FBI, which has jurisdiction because the alleged incident happened while they were flying from France to their home in L.A. The allegations are all the more shocking because there seemed to be few hints of trouble during the couple’s 12-year relationship and two-year marriage. They were last seen together in July making celebrating the birthday of their two youngest children, 8-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox, with an intimate family breakfast in Los Angeles. But both actors had been busy with film projects in the months leading up to their breakup. Below, a timeline of the actors’ split. FLASHBACK: Brad and Angelina at the 2012 Golden Globes Sept. 19: Jolie Files for Divorce According to the documents obtained by PEOPLE, the 41-year-old actress filed for divorce from Pitt on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple separated just five days ago, according to the divorce papers. Jolie asked for physical custody of the couple’s shared six children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox. She requested that Pitt, 52, be granted visitation. The actress did not ask for child or spousal support. Sept. 20: Pitt Speaks Out on Split Pitt acknowledged the divorce once news of the breakup started circulating on Tuesday. In a statement released to PEOPLE, Pitt said his focus is on their six children. “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids,” he said in the statement. “I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.” Jolie Also Releases a Statement Jolie also released a statement addressing the divorce through her attorney. “This decision was made for the health of the family,” the statement read. “She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time.” Rumors Circulate That Pitt Cheated on Jolie with Marion Cotillard Shortly after news of the divorce broke, the New York Post reported Jolie left her husband after suspecting he had been unfaithful with Cotillard, his costar in the upcoming World War II drama Allied. However, a source tells PEOPLE that the couple’s breakup has nothing to do with Cotillard. Jolie’s Father Reacts to the News Jon Voight voiced concern over his daughter’s ending marriage in an interview with Inside Edition. “It’s very sad,” the 77-year-old actor said. “Something very serious must have happened for Angie to make a decision like this.” He continued, “I don’t know what it is. It’s a sad thing. Say a little prayer.” Sept. 21: Source Says Pitt Will Fight for Custody of Children Despite Jolie filing for sole physical custody, a source tells PEOPLE Wednesday that Pitt wants to be present in his six kids’ lives. “Brad thinks Angelina is a great mother,” the insider says. “But he is also a great father. There is no way he is going to be absent for any part of his kids’ lives.” However, the source believes the conflict will be resolved peacefully. “This will ideally be resolved, amicably, long before any sort of legal battle ensues,” adds the insider.Cotillard Comments on the News In Midst of Announcing Pregnancy with Second Child The French actress revealed that she and her actor/director beau Guillaume Canet are expecting their second child on Wednesday. She also commented on high-profile split. “This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept up into. I am not used to commenting on things like this nor taking them seriously but as this situation is spiraling and affecting people I love, I have to speak up,” Cotillard captioned an Instagram photo. Cotillard continued, “I do very much wish that Angelina and Brad, both whom I deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment. With all my love, Marion.” Sept. 22: Pitt Is Under Investigation for Child Abuse The L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services is investigating child abuse claims against Pitt after someone anonymously reported an incident that allegedly occurred last Wednesday on the couple’s private plane, a source tells PEOPLE. Pitt is accused of getting verbally abusive with one of the couple’s kids, as well as getting “physical,” a source says. He was also said to be drinking at the time of the incident. Jolie was present at the time, along with at least some of their other children. The actress listed the date of separation as Sept. 15 in the divorce filings, a day after Pitt’s alleged blowup. The case has also been referred to the FBI since it allegedly happened while the family was in the air. Close
