What is very important for Interim Executives is undertaking meaningful work.  Meaningful work, in an organisation where values are aligned to the individual executive, is becoming a non-negotiable. One respondent of Watermark’s 2024 Interim Executive Survey said, “My tolerance for misalignment between values and work is lower”. Another respondent is “seeking values-aligned colleagues”, while another is building a career consisting of a “blend of paid work and passion projects”. What makes a great employer? We have been fortunate enough to have worked in many organisations. Here's a few things that we have noticed about the truly great companies; 💡 Ownership - Have clear direction; know where you are going, and how you will get there and communicate this effectively. Provide the tools to allow your staff to do their work and leave them to get on with it. Continue with plenty of informal feedback, whilst avoiding micro-managing. 💡 Career - Give people something meaningful to work on outside of their day-to-day work. Ideas on work practices and change processes (the way change is implemented) should be from the bottom up, not the top down. Encourage participation in projects outside of their usual role, should they have the capacity to do so. 💡 Environment - No one likes working in a cramped dark cold cupboard. Have plenty of natural light, provide places to relax and make these places feel like 'home'. 💡 Happiness - happiness keeps people motivated. Value each person; celebrating birthdays and festive events. 💡 Fantastic Managers - They genuinely care for their people. They don't refer to them as employees, workers, or staff, they always refer to their 'people'. If a business has a culture of strong psychological safety then employees will feel more comfortable and confident in speaking up - and this can help its leaders identify psychosocial risks. In a recent webinar, Mark Oostergo, Workplace Psychologist and Chief Executive at Australian Psychological Services, had the following advice for businesses who may need to bolster psychological safety within their teams. 👉 Communicate why the process is taking place and express a genuine intent to listen and understand people's experience. 👉 Reinforce that the data is going to be de-identified. 👉 If there's low psychological safety from a leadership perspective, consider an external provider. 👉 Clearly communicate your action plan, to build trust you will follow through. There's a lot of fear and anxiety that goes with the partner contribution and compensation management process, for both partners and partners in leadership roles. In The Partner Remuneration Handbook, Ray D'Cruz and Michael Roch suggest that a properly designed and managed process can support partner and partner-leader wellbeing. In the table below, they describe how potential negative sentiment can be turned into positive sentiment. Some of these changes are easy and fast. Others are harder and may take time. But all seem worth the effort when we consider what's at stake. It's hard not to get excited by some of these changes and what they might mean for the partnership culture and the whole firm.
