AIPPI Finland arranged an afternoon seminar on AI and IPR a few days ago. The program included many very interesting presentations: Patrik Gayer from Silo AI, Tobias Kempas from Vinge, Alexander Korenberg from Kilburn & Strode, Mike Connor from Alston & Bird, Antti Härmänmaa from Nokia Technologies and Reidar Wasenius from Lexofon. Finally, there was a panel with some of the speakers chaired by Kalle Hynönen from Krogerus. The welcome and closing remarks were delivered by Johanna Lilja, President of AIPPI Finland.
Personally, the presentation that perhaps resonated most to me was the one by Reidar Wasenius on “Human voices in the age of AI: Fair and unfair use cases”. Why is that? The answer is two-fold. First, Reidar is a great speaker, who clearly is able to capture an audience. And very entertaining. Second, the topic was quite concrete and included no legal provisions. Good.
With all the hype and talk around AI, I am more and more drawn to concrete examples and less to legal deep dives on issues which may or may not arise in the future. Don’t get me wrong, for us lawyers this is of course very important (the speakers certainly did a great job here), and should to a certain extent be a given – but the concrete use cases and examples are what captures my interest at the moment.
Reidar talked about how AI will replace celebrity voices and how he and his colleagues had adapted and are adapting to this change. To me, this is no uncertain prediction on machines maybe taking over the world someday. What Reidar referred to will in my mind happen (almost certain), and it will happen soon, to the extent it is not already happening. Reidar’s approach to this was sound: ok so this will happen, what can we do now to prepare for the change in order not to lose business? The presentation gave rise to many questions lingering in my mind, which is usually a very good sign.
